Spoke to the dietician today by phone about my consult. While we were talking she wanted me to walk 3 miles. I told her that was too much for me. She then suggested alternating my 2.2 mph with 2.3 mph. I told her I had tried that and it made finishing my walk difficult. Well, I tried it again today. I noticed my 2.2 mph was a little slow. So I alternated a little with 2.2 and 2.3 mph. I managed 47 minutes for 7 laps on the track and 250 calories. When I finished I told myself to go back and walk the additional 3 minutes for a total of 50 minutes for the day. I did the 3 extra minutes and walked at 2.4 mph. I got 266.7 calories burned. I felt good and my back didn't hurt like it usually does. I'll try it again tomorrow and see how I do. WooHoo!!!!!!

2.5 pounds lost!!

I haven't given up and I managed to lose 2.5 pounds in a week. I was up to 238, but didn't document it. I was mad that I had gained another pound. i weighed today and I was down to 235.5. I don't know if it is my habits kicking in or the glucomannan I am taking. Whatever it is I am glad. It feels good to finally have a little success. I won't get overly excited because the scale can easily go in the other direction!! I joined the Chair Exercise weight loss challenge today for Aug.1st through Sept 26th. I am trying to keep my calories up a little and exercising 6 days a week. I am up to 45 minutes on the treadmill for 1.65 miles. I think back in May when I started exercising and I could only walk for 5 minutes at a time. Now I can do the whole 45 minutes without stopping. Today was my free day, my day of rest, but I walked for 15 minutes I felt a little guilty skipping so I walked for a little while. At least today I can say I'm making progress!!!

    I do that too, y'know... Sunday is a day of rest, but though I skip the strength training I NEVER skip my walks... I may not go as far, but I find them rather refreshing...

Dietician

I am going to go ahead and have a consult with a dietician. The last one I had was back in 1977 when I was diagnosed with DM.. Lots of stuff has changed since then. I checked with my Medicare Insurance and the consult is covered for diabetes management. I would like the consult for weight loss but that isn't covered. Maybe the dietician can ascertain my necessary calorie range and I'll have better luck with my weight loss efforts. I have progressed to my next goal for my walking and can do 45 minutes now. I'll keep trying!! I'm not a quitter!!!!!!!

    The "consult" for weight loss is separate from renal and diabetic care?? Since WHEN?? LOL

You have a consultation with a nutritionist (you didn't say whether it's a renal specialist or not...) They always ask about your lifestyle and tastes, so be upfront with your concerns, snacking issues, etc. NOTHING can dictate what questions you ask in that consultation, so write down the things you want to know and take your list of questions with you-- and be sure to tell him/her what you said here, and ASK about the weight loss issues that are just as important to controlling your symptoms as the kinds of food you eat are!

I'm glad you have this opportunity--don't be afraid to take advantage of it! I have never know any of them to record the conversation-- or balk at answering any legitimate nutrition questions!

What's the big secret? I'm going on 10 months with SP and there's no weight loss. I'm exercising 5-6 days a week, walking 1.5 miles on the treadmill at 2.2 mph. I'm drinking 8-14 glasses of water a day. I've made changes in my dietary habits. I get 8.5 hours of sleep. I'm doing hypnosis. I track my food daily. I try not to cheat. I eat fresh fruits and vegetables. Eating out is nil. Despite all this I'm not losing weight. Sooooooo, what am I missing????

    Talking to your doctor sounds like an excellent idea! If your track your food and exercise on SP, you could print out the information and take it in for his/her review. Without enough calories one can experience hypoglycemia and for a diabetic this could lead to disastrous effects! See http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/di

My own experience with weight loss came after talking to my doctor, and reviewing whether my food, exercise routine and current diabetes medications were all working well together.

    First, I would make an appointment with your doctor. Make sure there is nothing stopping you from losing weight. I know that problems with your thyroid gland makes it extremely difficult to lose weight. There are other conditions as well.

Next, I would change up my exercise routine. Sometimes the body gets used to the same thing and changing it up can often get it going again.

Do you share your food and fitness trackers? Maybe sharing them could help. Letting other people see what you're eating and how you're exercising might give some clues. Are you eating at least 3 meals a day? Do you eat breakfast? Eating breakfast starts your metabolism going.

I just read one of your previous blogs and I'm kind of surprised at your doctor. Was there no mention of thyroid at all from her? You very well could be in starvation mode. I know that happened to me. Once I realized I wasn't eating enough calories, I changed my diet and the weight started coming off. I have my calorie range set to 1300-1600 which is down from the 1500-1900 the tracker said I needed. I would suggest redoing your nutrition tracker making sure you are getting enough calories for the exercise you are doing.

    How many calories are you consuming every day? Do your workouts still get your heart rate into the cardio zone? Have you considered adding strength training to your routine?

Have you seen your doctor for a complete? This would be the first thing I'd suggest you do.
The first thing at the beginning of my journey was have a serious conversation with my doctor. This was an adventure, we reviewed my history, my habits and had a complete exam with blood work and Mammogram (just because it was due)etc.

Today is about me!

That's right. Today I am loving myself. It is my rest day from exercise. I turned the alarm off and slept in. I got up at 9 and enjoyed breakfast. I only ate 3/4's of it, found myself full before finishing. Because today is about me I am not giving myself permission to go off my healthy eating. That will be enforced. But just for once I am I am allowing myself to be free of the worries of the week past and week to come. I am indulging myself in my own mind, thinking of good things, feeling good about the progress I have made, not the failures. Maybe the scale isn't going in the direction I want but there are other things going right in my life. I have a great husband, who loves me despite everything, and treats me kindly. I have a loving, if dysfunctional, family. I have wonderful pets who love me like family and are treated as such. Finances may be rough, but I am working on a plan. I've never in my life, that I can remember said I loved myself, but today that changes. Today I love myself. Maybe if I take time to "believe" that, it will carry through to another day, and then another day. But, for today, it is all about me!

    Sounds like a wonderful plan for your day Susan!! I have my 4 year old twin grandsons visiting for 3 days! We have a pool from Walmart up for them, they love the water! They are down for their naps now. You are welcome to come over and cool off in the pool!! :)
