Sparking Others

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

This week I became co-lead for the team 'Getting Fit for Cosplay' and created the team 'Otaku Fitness'. The main problem is the team I took over has.... well, me and maybe 2 others as active members and Otaku Fitness has... well, me. I need fellow gamers and anime fans that are trying to lose weight and would like to chat with people with similar interests to help me out and join these teams!!!!

I know we're all busy and have stuff to do but.... a 5 minute drop by the team page would totally make my day. At this point I'd flip out just to see someone posting messages other than myself.

So..... how do you Spark others to get going?

Epiphanies

Thursday, November 04, 2010

I've figured out that the first time I tried SparkPeople I went about it all wrong. Instead of finding workouts I liked and enjoyed, I used the ones they gave me, or I tried to do things that were entirely too hard. When I did find something I like (Wii Fit) I let other people (obviously non-Sparkers) talk down to me and discourage me. I was forcing myself to get up early in the morning (something I despise) to work out, and it was really taking all of the joy out of it.

So, this time around I've had a few epiphanies.

1. I can work out in the evening before bed, and it doesn't cause me any trouble sleeping at all. In fact, I seem to sleep better. Added bonus? It combats my evening urge to snack/eat.

2. I get an energy boost from squeezing an additional 10-20 minute less-intense exercise session in while my kids nap in the afternoon.

3. Who cares if I'm fat? Belly dancing is fun, no matter what size you are. There's a beginner's workout on Netflix Instant Watch that I find gives me a great ab workout, and I'm only doing the first 20 minutes right now. Bonus? I don't have to leave the house (and so don't have to worry about being embarrassed about my size).

4. I *cannot* eat a large breakfast in the morning. I have zero appetite when I wake up, plus, I have to wait for an hour after taking my thyroid medication before I can eat anyway. I'm better off with a mid-morning snack like a muffin, and then eating a healthy lunch, afternoon snack, and dinner instead.

So, pooh on the naysayers and the people who say things like "you shouldn't work out before bed, it'll keep you up," "if you don't eat breakfast, you won't lose weight," and "isn't it too embarrassing to do a workout like THAT??" or "That isn't a REAL workout". I'm doing what works for me, and for the first time in my life I'm enjoying a program to get me fit.

Dear Body:

I don't love you.

I don't even like you.

I can no longer pretend that we are in any way compatible with each other. You do not suit my goals for myself, nor can I do any of the things that I want to do with you in your current state. Consider this your final notice. Things are changing, starting right now. Actually, starting this morning when I woke you up at 6am, an hour earlier than usual and kicked your tail for an hour with that workout. This is just the beginning.

Be ready.
