Disappointing fair food

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Went to the fair today. Planned to have something totally unhealthy, but tasty! One day isn't going to kill me or pack on the pounds. I went looking for fried Oreos. Or fried Twinkies. Or a fried candy bar! I did draw the line at fried butter. That makes me gag just to think about it! YUCK!

So I looked. And I looked. And I looked. Nothing! Sure, they had Elephant Ears and corn dogs (had one of those with extra mustard) and chorizos and a whole bunch of other stuff that just don't do it for me. I decided to try an Italian sausage on a bakery bun with marinara sauce. Meh! It was okay. Don't get me wrong....I ate the whole thing! But I don't have to go back for it...ever!

I did the same thing last year...tried something and wasn't impressed. Maybe my expectations are too high. Maybe I remember things tasting better at the fair because I was a kid and everything was better at the fair!

Either way, it kept me from eating WAY too much. I am over on my calories for today, but I knew I would be. The good thing is that I didn't eat myself into a coma and I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on fair food. I spent a lot! But it could have been worse! LOL!

On that note, time to sign off. Need to get to bed so I can have another fun-filled family day tomorrow.

It's hard to enjoy junk food. I find myself looking for the good stuff more and more. Apples, grapes, tomatoes. The good things just hit the spot more. I do eat junk food - don't get me wrong - it's just less often.
My son and I always get the same things at the one fair we go to every year. Most of it is things I got as a kid at the same fair.

Why is it that fair food just doesn't taste as good as it used to? I used to love corndogs now they're just okay. Maybe this healthy eating thing is a good thing?

Don't you just hate it, when you make up your mind to eat really badly and then you can't find a thing that hits the spot?
emoticon

Keeps happening to me more and more.
For the past few Fridays (my long work days) I've set out on my way home to stop and get a cheeseburger and fries, but I never do, cause it just doesn't feel like it's going to hit the spot.

So, besides the food - hope you had fun at the fair anyway.

So did you ride any rides? At our state fair we have grilled corn on the cob which is to die for! I usually get an italian sausage but not with marinara sauce! I hope that rest of your weekend is good!

You nailed it - everything was better at the fair when we were kids! Especially those carnival attractions, like tossing coins in the dish for a gold fish, or throwing darts at balloons or trying to get the mechanic claw to grasp a prize and drop it in the slot before time ran out. My mom would never let us do any of those, so of course, that made them more attractive. Now I look at them and shake my head.

Glad you didn't find any fried Twinkies, silly.

Are you at the Minnesota State Fair or some poor other state's?

I had a very similar experience last year in Indiana...only to feel later that it was OK that I didn't want any of that stuff, but then, frankly, why go? So I can totally comiserate. emoticon

    Totally agree with Bill!

It has been happening to me, over the last months. Several times.
We have simply started to not like anything containing B' quality ingredients!
Collateral Profit? LOL

Live like you're dying? Really?

Friday, August 27, 2010

After I finished my workout and my iPod finished playing the play list (I don't have it on repeat), I heard the song "Live Like You're Dying." At least I think that was the name of the song. Sorry, don't know who sang it. The main theme of the song was to (I know, big surprise) live as though you were dying.

We've all heard these songs. The lyrics help to remind you to celebrate what is good in your life. Appreciate what you have. Stop, smell the roses, enjoy the journey, all that good stuff!

This might surprise some of you, but my mind took that thought in a different direction. (I know! I'm shocked too! LOL!) Live like you're dying, huh? What would I do differently? Let's see...I would work out less. Why? Because I work out to be healthy. To live longer. If I'm dying, what's the point? And why would I want to spend my time sweating and smelling up the joint (and trust me, I was smelling up the joint! Pee-ew!)

I would not go to work. I like the people I work with, but I don't want to spend my last days in an over-air-conditioned cubicle writing documents and replying to e-mails. That could present issues to my family, huh? They've gotten used to having a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and some of the other "luxuries" my working has provided.

I would eat more food and more unhealthy food. I'd still eat broccoli because I like broccoli. BUT, I would also eat more burgers and fries and fry sauce and steak with mushrooms and lobster with butter and peanut butter and peanut butter cookies and M&M pretzels and...well, you get the idea. Dang! I'm hungry now!

I'd probably drive faster too.

So, living like I'm dying might not be the best idea for me. However, I do get the point. So, tomorrow, while the kids and I are at the fair, I will enjoy myself! I will have a corn dog and savor every bite. I will watch my kids ride some rides and revel in their joy. I will watch people and appreciate the weather and the day and the freedom to take a day off from work. But I won't drive toooooo fast! LOL!

Tim McGraw sings that song as a tribute to his dad Tug McGraw who died of a brain tumor a few years ago. In the song he does do things out of the ordinary - why live like you always have? You might as well have some fun. I take care of a 96 year old man who is kept on a strict lowfat, no salt diet and must exercise every day! He has a pacemaker and has congestive heart failure. He is on oxygen 24/7. When are his kids going to let him enjoy life? The other caregiver and I struggle every week with the restrictions, but we have to follow the family's orders.

That would be, I believe, Tim McGraw. And I agree with you - if I were dying, I'd blow out the credit cards, eat whatever sounded good, and do whatever appealed.

Kris Allen. That's who sings that song. He's hot. ANYWAYS! You're too funny....but how true! Maybe once in awhile it's okay to live like that, though. Smellin' up the joint, huh? At least you can say you "Smell Like You're Dyin'"! LOL! I crack me up!

I'm thinking that if I were to "live like I were dying", more than likely I'd be in a significant degree of pain and with a highly compromised ability to function......but then, again, this is just my own take on the phrase.....YMMV, of course.....

Great post, BTW - you bring up some excellent points!

New faucet and no fighting!

Monday, August 23, 2010

Yesterday, my son went to get a drink of water and the handle came off in his hand. emoticon The handle had been coming loose for awhile, so I know he wasn't throwing a fit or anything. Not that MY Perfect son would ever throw a fit. LOL!

We bought a new faucet last night and decided to wait until today to install it. I was a little shell-shocked by the price - the cheapest one was $50 and it was just that...cheap! The one we got was a little over $200 (gulp!), but I'm looking at the long-term investment.

It is a brushed stainless steel model that arcs pretty high over the sink and has the detachable part of the faucet so you can spray. It doesn't have as much pressure as the old one, but it's working.

The part that took us the longest was getting the old faucet off. The bolt that was holding it on had corroded and was a pain to get off! DH and I worked together and finally managed to pry that thing off! And we did it with no fighting! And only minimal cursing! LOL!

Once the faucet was installed and the kitchen cleaned up, I began a marathon of cooking. I made burritos, buffalo chicken, sweet potato fries, potato soup, cooked broccoli and assembled beef enchiladas for tomorrow night's dinner. Suffice it to say that the kids and I have plenty to choose from for the next few days for lunch!

If it is any consolation we had the same thing happen about ten years ago and from what it sounds like, we replaced it with the same faucet you guys did. Ten years later it still works fine and that is after ten years of growing teens pushing and pulling on and at it.

Way to go on the food prep. I know when we do that I eat better nd feel better.

Although we got the edited version of the blue sunday school lesson, good to hear it was a minimalists festival. On a side note, I may need some help painting another members home page. Are you up for the task? LOL all in good fun I promise emoticon Good choice on the faucet, very good brand.

DONNAORLENE 8/23/2010 12:55AM

Ah, I remember those days. I use to do all of those things myself. And they can be a pain. Especially because of Homedale water. It corrodes everything. If I had known how much money a water softener would save me on plumbing and hot water heaters, etc. But you're right about cheap faucets - you get what you pay for. I bough a Peerless and when the sprayer that comes out of the faucet sprang a leak in the seam, I took it to American Standard Plumbing in Caldwell and they ordered a new one and gave it to me - no charge because they have a lifetime warranty.
But I can't do that stuff anymore, so I call my brother. LOL!!
Anyway, glad you got it fixed, and without arguing! That's even better! But it sounds like you better get some rest now, you had one heck of a weekend! And still had time to stop by and say Hi! Thanks for checking in on me. We had a quiet weekend and I am doing better and I'm thankful for it. Take care and hope you have a good week!

Holy Moly am I ever tired!

Saturday, August 21, 2010

Another one of my marathon days of getting stuff done. Up at 5:30 to get to the gym. Home, start laundry, eat breakfast, strip and remake the bed, wipe down the bathroom and get the boy ready for Jamboree. Jamboree for a little over two hours (it was fun and they kicked some butt!), birthday gift shopping, bank, boy to party, library and back home for lunch. Laundry, Sparking, go get boy.

FINALLY made it home a little after three o'clock. I was so tired that I fell asleep reading my book and stayed that way for a little over an hour...sitting up. The only reason I got up was cos I needed to go potty! LOL! Then the guilt set in and I worked on the laundry some more.

DH, MIL and FIL came home a little after five and we all headed to Red Robin for dinner. No cooking for me! Yay!!! And my big plans for tomorrow? Sleep in!! That's it! Yippee!!! emoticon

Hope you got some rest! Love how you call your son "the boy." My kids didn't know their real names until they started school. They all thought their names were "bubs" "sis" "pensie" and "bean." I still have to write it like that on their Christmas gift tags.
