Well, not quite.

Monday, July 26, 2010

Of course, ya gotta try before you can say you failed, right? Yesterday I blogged about running an 8-minute mile with my daughter. The plan was to get up at 8:00 this morning and head out. We would jog/run until someone had to stop (I was assuming it would be her! LOL!) We would then walk until we were ready to jog again. Repeat until two miles are done.

Well, that's not quite how it worked. I woke up about 7:30 and my side hurt. Every once in awhile, it feels like I pulled a muscle or something and hurts bad enough that I can't get a full breath. It was happening last night but I thought I would be over it by this morning. I was, but not until I woke up again closer to 9:00. By then, DH had gone to the store for breakfast makings and come home and started breakfast. You can NOT turn down food someone else cooked. State Law! LOL! And by the time the food had burned off, it was way too hot to run outside. I know. Excuses. But there you go.

I did go to the gym tonight (DD is not a member, so could not join me.) I decided that since we are going to do this thing tomorrow morning, I should probably see how fast I can run, if I can run a mile, how long it takes me and if I feel like I'm going to die at the end. Walking there, I determined that I would need to set the treadmill to a 7.5 mph pace to be able to hit an 8-minute mile. emoticon In other words, no 8-minute mile for me tonight! LOL!

I warmed up for a couple of minutes and then cranked it up to a run/jog. I ran at 6.5 for awhile, but the pace was a little more than I could sustain for a full mile. Backed it down to 6.0. Finished the mile at that...except for the last bit, I cranked it back to 7.2 or 7.3. Overall, the mile took me just over 10 minutes. The good news, I can run one mile straight! The bad news, I might be really sore to run with DD tomorrow. Oops! emoticon

I'll let you know how tomorrow goes!

Sorry your plans went awry. I hope your muscle pull is better tomorrow. Take it easy.

I think the not turning down food cooked by someone else is a Federal Law. Woo Hoo on your mile. I do have a question...will your daughter be timed on her 8 minute mile at try outs? as in.. "ok now run 1 mile..Go"? Or is she just expected to be able to maintain that pace for every mile she runs? I would find it impossible to do...but she does have age on her side.

I can only comment on the food as I am not a runner at all. I am too gravity challenged (much like Michelle). But you are right, you cannot turn down food cooked by someone else. It always tastes so much better.

Great job on running the mile!

8-minute mile? And not in a car either!

Sunday, July 25, 2010

DD came home today and told me that for softball she needs to be able to run a mile in under eight minutes. emoticon

For all you runners out there, you're probably thinking okay. And? Well, I'm not a runner (at least not right now) and my daughter hated soccer because of...yes, you guessed it...the running! And she needs to be able to run a mile in eight minutes??

Okay, so we'll start practicing. I'm not sure when softball tryouts are, but now is as good a time to start as any! The road we live on has an easy to measure mile. I told her we could walk the ~1/8th of a mile to the one end and then start jogging. As soon as one of us needed to stop, we would. Then we could start jogging again. Eventually we will be able to run/jog the whole mile. Once we're at that point, then we can start cutting down the time.

I told DD that we would start 8:00am. She couldn't understand why we had to start sooooooo early in the morning! Early? HA! emoticon emoticon I'll try to get her up in the morning and see how her motivation is. If we wait until too late, it will be too hot and it will be much harder to run. If she doesn't want to go outside in the morning (beautiful time and beautiful place to exercise!) she can start on the treadmill upstairs. Not quite as beautiful! LOL! emoticon

I am hoping that she decides she wants to run outside. It will be a good reason for me to run as well. I'll keep you updated!

I'm baffled as to why you need to be able to run a mile in 8 minutes for softball. Surely there isn't any long distance running involved in the sport? I thought it was more short bursts of energy over short distances (between bases & running after the ball)? It sounds more like the bleedin' Army(!)
Best of luck with your training. I hope it all goes to plan.

    Wishing you both the best!
I don't jog, but lately it's been taking me 10 minutes just to WALK a half a mile, so I think if you can run a mile in just 8 minutes that would be awesome!

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Oh...and giraffes!!

Saturday, July 24, 2010

Went to the zoo with the kids yesterday. First stop...African Exhibit! It was a new exhibit and we wanted to be sure to see it first.

There was a boat you could ride (for $1 per passenger) that would take you on a mini-African safari. Very mini - maybe 3 minutes. But, you did get to see the Mango Bay monkeys and you can only see them from the boat.

DD "loving" her life vest (after all, the water was up to 2' deep in places! LOL!!)

Mango Bay monkey (no charge for you to see them!)

Then to the giraffes! Loved the giraffes. Did you know that giraffes are really tall? And have humongously long tongues! So cool!

Then to the lions. It was warm and they were apparently really tired. I offered to let the boy go scratch the lion's tummy...after all, that's what she looked like she wanted! LOL!

Lots of other animals but I think the kids liked feeding the goats best. They were so cute! Oh...the goats were too. emoticon

It was a blast!

Afterward, we met my mom for lunch and then headed to a local park. All in all, a very nice day.

Did you know giraffes' tongues are blue? I know this from first-hand experience when the giraffe at the zoo tried to lick me!
We were in the pen, as the female had just given birth. We were told not to make any noise so we didn't frighten the little one, but when the giraffe came for me I screamed as I ducked for cover, lol. Yes, I got thrown out.
It sounds like you all had a blast. I do love the zoo, but it's very expensive over here, so I haven't been for years.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday.

Five sweet, blissful hours spent in solitude!

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

Well, solitude from the kids and responsibilities anyway. LOL!

Started the day by sleeping in almost to 8:00! Woo hoo! Left for the gym and got my workout in before doing anything else. Ate breakfast, gathered all the stuff I needed, cut the loaf of bread and wrapped the slices and then headed out for MY day.

I started by running errands (bank, post office, turning in aluminum cans) and then headed to Kohl's. Found a great pair of capris on the clearance rack for $8. Then off to Target. Yellow shirt and a 3/4 sleeve black sweater (one on clearance one on sale). Then lunch. Then ShopKo. Another sweater for only $8! I managed to make the day last for a little over 5 hours and I only got one phone call! Woo Hoo!!

After dinner, we went to pick up the boys' gear for football...helmet and pads. He got LOTS of attention because of his sling. Practices don't start for another three weeks, so he will miss at least one week of practice. He'll still be there, just not be able to do anything. After six weeks, we'll get the collarbone re-x-ray'd (is that a word?) to see if it's healed. At that time, he may get to practice. Will have to make the call on playing an actual game though. Don't want to rebreak it!

On that note, DD is staring me down. Waiting for her turn on the PC. If looks could kill....

Talk to you all later!

Glad you had a day for you and when GD goes back to school I will only have her 1 day, then my days will be for me. Love to find bargains and that is how I shop and I love khols. I went there and found so many good buts and had about $400.00 for $125.00 that's my way of shopping. So glad your son will be in sports and hope his collarbone heals real good. Stay true to your routine exercise and healthy eating and continue on you goals.

I can tell the boy is feeling better.

Wednesday, July 21, 2010

There are signs.

One - he has taken a lot fewer pills today than he has in the previous two days

Two - he had a friend over all day and they were able to find things to do

Three - no nap for him today

Four - he is insisting on doing things for himself, even things he shouldn't do yet

Five - he's fighting with his sister

Yep, that last one is the one that tells me the most! They are swiping each other for stupid things. Yelling at each other over dumb stuff. You know...being siblings! Tomorrow is my day to take time for myself, no plans (other than what I plan), no responsibilities, no kids. I WILL assign a ton of chores to each of them if they call me with their bickering! LOL! And I've told them that too. We'll see how tomorrow goes!
