Hallelujah, now 4 years after surgery for thyroid cancer, the combo of having my medication dose in the correct amount and my finally doing my part with nutrition & fitness (thank you SPARK PEOPLE crew!), I am back in my pre-cancer weight range and continuing to lose pounds and inches.
Apparently, my thyroid issues had gone undiagnosed for decades, but I also wasn't fully doing my part in trying to live a healthy lifestyle either. I'd definitely thrown in the towel long ago.
Now I can see that when all the right systems are in place, my body is working the way it should. Wow, am I ever grateful!

O.k., so I'm not a fan of walking. In fact, I don't like to go outside. However, I'm a BIG fan of helping out local charities. So, here's what got me motivated to move:
In April, I signed up to walk in the 5K "Heart Walk" for the American Heart Association www.startwalkingnow.org/start_heart_
walk.jsp Since then, I've considered myself to be "in training."
Never mind that I weighed 310 lbs and was using a walker when I registered for the September walk. I've lost 28 lbs so far & although I still may not be able to ditch the walker in time for the 5K event, I do plan to be considerably lighter (less to haul!).
Now, I've volunteered to be on the committee for my local Food Bank's "Hunger Walk" our link is: www.slofoodbank.org/hunger_walk.php , but check in your own town/city for events in your area.
And, LOTS of other organizations hold walks to help raise funds. So, dust off those walking/running shoes - or get yourself a new pair!
Happy Walking for Charity, ya'll!

What I am especially grateful for on this 4th of July is freedom from feeling held captive by my appetite. So far, the insanity of binging has subsided to something a bit more controlled. If I know that I'm hungry & am going to eat over my calorie range for the day, thankfully, I've been able to make wise choices as to what I'm going to put into my mouth. It sure is one step @ a time...

When I first started this most recent weight loss journey 3 months ago, I couldn't imagine eating under 1,800 calories a day. But, strangely, as I've been losing weight and increasing my exercise, I'm finding it a struggle to eat 1,500 calories a day. I'm not sure that going much below that is a good idea anyway. Maybe I could start adding more protein and an occasional glass of juice, which would boost my caloric intake.

This week, I'm increasing the intensity of my workouts. I've graduated from 1 - 2 lb weights and will be adding 2 different "Chair Dancing" workouts in the afternoons. Mornings are now 2 mile walks (seated versions of an indoor cardio workout) w/ 20 minutes of weights every other day.
I'm upping my game as today is the Kick-Off for the American Heart Association's 5K Walk in September & I'm in "training" for that!
