Commentary on Change

Sunday, September 26, 2010

I used to hate change. All I was looking for was a destination, forgetting that the destination is the end and it's the journey that life is about. This time of year is one for noticing change and instead of evaluating it, just noting it.
Today I decided to take my walk at a nearby high school (On a Sunday I figured the outdoor track would be empty. The track was empty, but the field it surrounded was filled with early teen boys playing football. I don't mean some local kids running around. I mean boys in uniforms with pads, helmets, officials, an electronic scoreboard, et. al. At first I was tempted to judge and think to myself, remember when my brother and his buddies just grabbed a ball went to the local park and played. But walking back I noticed something else. The school's soccer fields were full of elementary school girls playing soccer, uniforms, officials, etc. Things change, maybe for better, maybe for worse. We don't know. But it means life is going on.

In some ways - in this hairy-scary world of ours - formal activities for kids are safer. At least they were participating in sports.
Hope your walk was enjoyable!

Light and Weight

Saturday, September 25, 2010

This evening DH and I went to a concert of a folk singer. (Yes, we are that old.) He played a guitar and sang his own songs about being part of a whole world. In one song he had us sing the the chorus. He had written the song about this time of year as the days grown shorter for us in the Northern hemisphere. The chorus was "Where is the light (repeated 3 times) ; it's inside of me." During the intermission I saw a friend I haven't seen in some time and she literally gushed about how good I looked. I thanked her and then thought about it on the way home. Yes, I do look better without 65 extra lbs on my 5'7" frame. But,I think she was seeing something else. I think she was seeing the light in me, the one that had dwindled to barely a spark. It is now a flame because I believe in me, I am a person of value, I have gifts to give and I am here to share them. The light is inside of me!

Get Skype!

Friday, September 24, 2010

This is really not a commercial because the product I am talking about is a free computer application. If your computer has sound and/or sound and a camera, you can talk to anyone in the world for free and see them.
My DH's sister lives in Germany. She recently download Skype and it allowed us to have a face to face conversation and share such wonderful news. Her DIL is a breast cancer survivor and recently was diagnosed with possible tumors in her brain. She had a new procedure done and just got the news that all tumors are gone. She seems to be cancer free. We are elated for her, her husband and their two little girls who are 4 and 6. It was such a joyous way to share the news and hear and see how everyone is doing.

Walking and Meditating

Thursday, September 23, 2010

I have an MP3 loaded on my IPod that is a series of affirmations about recovering from serious surgery. It is about 20 minutes long. I used it during my solitary walk to a nearby park. It is the longest walk I have taken since my surgery almost 2 weeks ago. Since it was a great day and late morning, I saw nobody along the way and no traffic either. By the time I got to the park I was feeling great. I couldn't remember if there were swings, but if there were, I had decided to swing. I saw the swings just beyond a group of 3 large pine trees. I walked and stood on the pine needle covered ground, closed my eyes, listened to the affirmations and felt so grounded and free at the same time. After I went for a small swing, I discovered that you use your core muscles for everything! Once I got moving and was pumping to go higher, my middle let me know it was time to quit. DH promised to go with me next time and push me!

Up date on Tummy tuck

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

It is just short of two weeks since I had my tummy tuck. According to the doctor everything is going well. However, in addition to wearing a very tight elastic band about 12 inches wide around my lower belly, I was also instructed this week to begin wearing a compression garment... like Spanks... those girdle like garments. I have ordered a couple on line that don't have legs. The only one I could find in town has legs. So I am encased in elastic from about mid thigh to just below my bra line. It has a secure feeling, but it also limits my appetite. Seriously, I get full very quickly and I don't have much appetite. Thank goodness for the nutrition tracker cause I can keep track of what I eat during the day and make sure I get the calories, carbs and protein I need for good healing. I have even had to eat parts of a dark chocolate Hershey's bar!

Have you tried smoothies and yogurt?

I fid when I'm not too hungry I can always find some space for those, as it doesn't really feel like eating, more like drinking. Yogurt especially is very good for both carbs and protein, and you can have either the full or low fat version.
