Be specific

Monday, June 25, 2012

Spark emphasizes being SPECIFIC with goals and I totally agree. I am doing 5% challenge, so what I need to do today is 20 minutes of strength training, and 30 minutes of a walk, and 8 glasses of water today. It sounds so simple, doesn't it?

I will use this page to record my progress.

1. Did I do the strength training with the exercise bands?

2. Did I walk 30 minutes to the bank and back?

3. Did I drink 8 glasses of water by making herbal tea and putting it in the fridge?

Being specific gives you something to measure. If you like that sort of thing. Keep at it. You may have a key here.

As long as the specific goals are for the doing not the results. Do first, and the results will come in God's good time.

Missed Blogs

Monday, June 25, 2012

Golly gee, I intended to do a blog every day, and now it is Sunday night. How does this happen? Well, I woke up at 4 am, read a book for 2 hours, went back to sleep at 6, and then slept until 8. By the time I took a shower, drank coffee, and all of that, I was late starting my day!!!

I don't always have new things of worth to say to write a blog. Let's fly to make progress.

I am always amazed at how much I do NOT get done now that I am retired. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I do not. The book and coffee sounded like a good alternative (and of course, the sleep).

I, too, know how easy it is to miss blog postings. I mean to blog 3-4 times a week and I do significantly less than that.

Walking: good/bad?

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

I did walk in the bad weather, but it depressed me.

Then the next day it was beautiful so I walked easily.

Now today, my knee is starting to hurt and I wonder if I have been overdoing it. I have 500 fitness minutes this month and it feels good!!!

I really do not want to have a knee replacement, I know so many people who have had them. So, I wonder if I need to slack off on the walking. Could something I am doing to make me good, actually be bad for me????

I, too, am in the "I hope I won't need knee replacements" situation. My left knee has more degeneration than my right one, so that one is more of a problem for me. If I'm walking on a treadmill or something like that, I've been using a soft brace I bought at the pharmacy and that seems to help (it will be even better when my knees, etc., are smaller so that the brace fits better). I recently started doing some Leslie Sansone Walk At Home DVDs (basically I'm working on the warm-up, 14-minute mile, and the cool-down) and they don't bother my knees. They're great for days when you can't get out to walk. Unfortunately I haven't been able to use the DVDs this week and may not for the next few weeks because the space I need is being taken up by a ladder and/or tarp with pieces of wood and plaster, etc., from the construction being done above the room! Can't wait until the work is finished so I can get back to using the DVDs!!!

Good luck! emoticon

I have arthritis in my knees and so does my DH. His is worse than mine! I use an oil with Glucosamine and Emu oil, which really does give me relief. Its always bad when it is damp or ready to rain. Just walk a few steps if you can on wet days. If it makes you feel so bad, don't do it! Try hula hooping or something less likely to hurt your knees. I lay on my back and lift one leg at a time with knee bent at a right angle and do very gentle circles left then right. It helps ease the pain for me and strengthens the muscles. But stop if it hurts! Also with knees bent and legs together swing feet gently from left to right. Its much easier on the knees than the squat swing which some advocate to do. Exercise on the bed helps you lose weight just as much as walking, but puts less stress on the knees. That is how I first started to exercise. It was difficult going up hill at that time. I have very little problem now, but you have to ease into it gradually, not all at once. Losing weight helps too!

My left knee hurts a lot, but the doctor said it is arthritis and there is very little that can be done. However, in the case of arthritis exercise is good for you. Although it hurts a bit, it makes you feel better in the long run. Guess you need to just grit your teeth and bear it -- eventually you will make it feel better instead of worse -- and possibly avoid the knee replacement.

Before u go the replacement route, have your doc give u voltaren gel. It might help! emoticon

I have to go by how my body is reacting to my walks. Take care of your knee. I was walking almost 4 miles a day and some of that is uphill. I have had a hamstring sprain and also a pulled tendon in my foot. Now I do what my doctor told me and take two or three short walks a day. It seems to be working for me. I know it will get better once I take off more weight.

Early Morning Streak

Monday, June 18, 2012

I am going to try that "streak" thing, boy, does it take a long time to understand some of the nuances of Spark!!! I did not understand why the page said I had zero, when I knew I had exercised, but now I see that I have to enter some of the goals manually. I thought Spark did it automatically.

I have walked every single day since getting back from the cruise. Now, today is a big test case: it is cold, foggy, miserable: will I do it? Sure, it is easy enough to get out and walk when the sky is bright, the birds are singing. But today the sky is grey, the birds do not know what to do with themselves!!! They are hiding out. Will I?

Will get back to you.

If its too wet to walk, do some gentle marching on the spot to music. You know you love music! I have seen you write about it. Then see if you can do some gentle dancing like waltz steps or side to side. You don't have to walk outside in the rain! If it makes you miserable! LOL!
