Dinner Disasters

Dinner seems to be the time that it is very hard to hold on to the calorie counting horse. For starters, usually, I am with another person. I always eat more in a social situation. Secondly, if that other person cooks, they often use much more salt and fat than I would. Thirdly, if I eat in a restaurant, all bets are off.

So, n0w that we know that dinner is the disaster time, what do we do?

I am not going to become a hermit in order to eat properly. The only idea I can come up with is portion control. (but then that can insult the other person). Well, tough bananas for them if they are insulted. And then, of course, I love to cook, so I can have them to dinner. (And watch them re-salt everything -- (which actually really irritates me!!)

    I eat alone and still have problems with that last meal... When i eat out i dont worry about a bigger meal as i get a container at the beginning of the meal and put half in the container... If you are eating at a friends home, try bringing a small plastic container with lid and take part of what you put on your plate home...If you are good enough friends to dine there, they should be ok with you trying all they have cooked but not breaking your meal plan in the process...

    For me, after dinner is the tough spot. I can have a modest but satisfying dinner and gorge two hours later. I guess if I went to bed at 7:00 I might be able to sleep through my grazing impulses.

    4pm until dinner is my bad time, too, even after all these years. I cook every night, though, for myself and my hubby. Even if I lived alone I think I'd rather cook and have a neighbor over. When you cook a lot you get to prefer your own food.

    My worst time of day is when I come into the house in late afternoon. That spells DISASTER.

As for eating in a restaurant I find that dividing my plate into a portion size before I start eating really helps. What is hard for me is the bread, especially if its fresh.

    From 4 pm on is my bad time too, and I don't know what to do about it. It is when I am trying to get dinner going, and a healthy snack just doesn't cut it for me. If I do not have to cook and can get away from the kitchen I do better. That is impractical of course! Anxious to see others thoughts on this!

Bad Wednesday

I had a sore throat on Friday, but on the weekend, I actually felt okay, just a little bit under the weather and I blithely thought it was just a mini-virus or something. I even went for a 2 mile walk in the cold weather on Monday. But now I feel really sick. And I have so much to do. I was planning to stay overnight with my daughter and her new baby. But I cannot do that if I am ill. For one thing, they could get it. But also, I am up all night, congested, it is horrible.

    I've had that too. A friend described it as the mucus fairy came to visit her every evening and kept her up all night coughing. I knew exactly what she was talking about! Hope you get well fast! You "need" to help with that baby!

    Oh Carol, I am sorry. I think I am just getting over the same bug. It hit one day was gone the next then hit with a vengeance! I have been coughing for over a week and still sound awful. I hope yours is much less nasty!

Tuesday Thoughts Today

Setting 1,23, goals for spark, and 1,2,3 goals for personal items on this blog really worked. Will try again.

Personal goals
1. Make spaghetti sauce
2. Fertilize rest of plants in garden
3. Sort out computer room

Spark goals
1. record all foods in tracker
2. go for two mile walk
3. do exercise ball workout for lower body

    Writing it down and making it public makes it more likely you will commit to doing them- good for you to set goals and work towards them!! I should try this. emoticon Peggy

Blank Slate

Monday, February 27, 2012

Monday Morning feels like a Blank Slate!!! I love being retired. I can say to myself, "what do I feel like doing today?" I have certain things I do need to do:
1. find a tax person for my mom's taxes (mine done with Turbo tax already)
2. make appointments (medical) that I have been putting off and putting off
3. water yard (it may rain, but then it may not)

Spark things to do
1. strength exercise with Coach Nicole
2. do a good long walk to achieve my 1000 minutes goal by the end of the month, which is coming soon, in fact, it is Thursday!!!
3. record all foods on tracker
4. return to this page and check off if 1-3 are done on both counts!!!

    Commenting on my own blog again. Well, I did it, I got out, even though it was cold, and walked two miles; one mile to the bank and one mile uphill back.

    I have busy, wonderful Mondays. I had a yoga class today, and while it's great for stretching, balance and some strength, I don't think it worked off that slice of banana nut bread I ate this morning. I'm wishing I had come home and walked a couple of miles too.

It rained here, kinda dreary. Here's hoping our Tuesday will be beautiful and bright!

    I feel the same way about Mondays!! Well actually everyday now that I've retired.....it's just a day waiting to be filled.....or not!! That feels like true freedom!

Derailment

Have sore throat and am congested. My pattern in the past with illness is to knock off exercise, but the knock off will continue weeks after I am well.

They say knowledge is half the battle. Not sure what to do. I have that sick, tired feeling. I could do a few stretches, just to keep up the habit.

Also, I am not real sick, you know, maybe this will be mild.

    I came down with this Jan. 7, and am still not 100%. It threatens to come back at me if I get too cold or tired. DD and grandson are having the same problem with it. Stay on top of it and get plenty of rest. I kept the exercise to hand weights and stretches as aerobics were too hard on the lungs and made the cough worse. I gave myself credit for doing what I could, and I only gained a couple temporary pounds from eating crackers all the time to settle the nausea from drainage. Must have been salt pounds because it came right off.

Don't let this discourage you. We notice it is only the two taking care of the toddler that can't shake it. Everyone else got well in the normal time.

    Do a few easy stretches is you can and a short walk. Meanwhile post on your refrigerator a reminder to exercise when you're better. Don't keep the old habits - start with a new one. This will be a good challenge for you and an accomplishment. Feel better soon! emoticon
