Missed a Day

Tuesday, October 04, 2011

Was overnight at my daughter's house and missed doing the blog. Her husband was away for a few days, and we had a nice intimate time together; she is pregnant with baby #2, a girl, and she has a year and a half year old son. It just seems a shame that things are so much harder for young people now than they were for us at the same age. Her husband has no job, the house they bought was just exhorbitantly priced for such a junky place, and she gets no help from his side of the family.

I ate a ridiculous amount of food yesterday, being off the grid so to speak. Also, am still hobbling around, and cannot do my walks, although I could do upper body exercises, but have lost my motivation for it.

One day is just that: one day. Think of how many days you've made great choices and walked on towards that healthy lifestyle! Do what you can when you can, and just take baby steps. One at a time will lead to more and more, and before you know it you'll be back on track and seeing this rough patch as a little bump in the road that made you stronger. You can do it!

Sounds like it's time to focus your energies on something that you can do something about - your health! You can only do so much for your dd, and stressing won't help. Plan out your meals, exercise those upper body muscles and do what you can!

Suggestions for Spark???

Sunday, October 02, 2011

It would be helpful if all the food tracker items were standardized. For example, I have gotten into the habit of weighing things in grams. Many of the spark foods come in this unit. But today, I wanted to measure grapes, and there were only 2 units, individual grape, and cup. Well, a cup of big grapes would weigh differently than a cup of small grapes, and I don't understand why they did not have grams for this one. It seems like they should have ounces, grams, individual item, and cups. All the units, and people choose which unit to always use to measure that fits best with their lifestyle.

Spark has really bent over backwards to make tracking pretty easy, and this one addition would help even more. Where can I make this suggestion????

I do get grams on my spark nutrition tracking for grapes, there must be something wrong with your grapes!! If you can not get, you can use what others have tracked and change the wt accordingly. I use this option often.
Good Luck.

If I were you, I'd measure out individual grapes, into a cup, and add that as a "food not listed" and then make it a favorite and just use that number from now on. The slight variation in the number of calories probably won't be enough to worry about.

Or go to another website, like Calorie King and use their numbers, make it a favorite. Then when you have grapes you just go to YOUR favs and not bother with Sparks info.

Disappointed

Saturday, October 01, 2011

re: yesterday's fall......I called the advice nurse, and based on the fact that really my ankle is not too bad, I have iced it, elevated it, and compressed it. I did not need to go to the emergency, which was a huge relief. My mom fell 3 years ago at Safeway, and cracked her patella. We spent ten, yes, ten hours in the emergency room, and that was when I realized how bad the American medical system is. All she needed was a quick x-ray and a splint to immobilize it. Emergency rooms should be for heart attacks, serious auto accidents, breathing stopped, stuff like that. I don't get it.

What I am disappointed about is that i was going so well with the 5% challenge, and now I am stymied. I can't do my big walk, and I ate like a horse last night (for extra energy, ha ha)

Comment on comments-- thanks everyone with situations where a person needs medical attention, but it is not an emergency, why can't they just go to a specific place for that, they used to have docs in the box, remember that? and you could go any time day or night, on vacation, or whatever. Now they send the most minor cases to the emergency room. Why?

It's just the 1st week Carol -- I stayed the same this week as well and so we're in the same boat BUT we will and can do this -- just have to keep that resolve and focus going. Keep that ankle elevated and iced, yes it needs rest but you can still do stretches and bends!

    Hi again, Carol.
Re the ER experience. It may be the same there...I don't know. But, yes, heart attacks and accidents get looked after first thing. I actually worked in Emergency for a while as a booking and registration clerk. It was too much for my temperment.
Then, over the years I took my mother there many times with her Angina attacks and not breathing well, etc. (she passed away seven years ago). I sure miss her calls...
She would go by ambulance and people arriving in ambulances took priority.
The "bottom line" is: everybody gets triaged. So, a person with the flu may very well sit for 10 hours!!! But at least somebody first puts them in the lineup.
Hope you're back to normal soon! Oh, and eating like a horse (been there...), maybe your animal of choice (and mine...) could be a bird tonight! :)
Hugs, Sandra

That stinks. I hope you feel better soon. Do you have access to a swimming pool? That would probably be the best exercise to keep weight off of your ankle. I'm also seen people at the gym use the bikes using only one leg. Not the best, but better than nothing.

Consider this to be a little bump in the road of life, an intermission, if you will. Take the next few days and do chair exercises instead. And then when you feel ready, put on an ankle brace, from the drug store or big box store and test out your ankle on a 10 minute walk. Then, depending on how you feel, add or subtract a little time. Or if it really hurts like crazy, go back to chair exercises for a few more days and then test it again. Supporting that ankle for a while is KEY, in my opinion, since it's now weakened and ripe for more injury, until it's completely healed.

Carolee - sorry to hear about your fall, but glad to hear it wasn't more serious.

I want to report a GOOD experience in an ER....... I went to Bar Harbor, ME over Labor Day week & took a bad fall on my knee at Thunder Hole. Oh, nothing broken (THANKFULLY), but to make a long story short, my friends took me to the ER at the hospital there. We were in & out in just a hair over an hour -- and that included 4 x-rays!!!!!!! Yes, I was surprised too!!! Just goes to show, it can be done........

Sprained ankle?

Friday, September 30, 2011

I just missed a step carrying laundry downstairs, and I twisted my ankle to the point of excruciating pain. I am now doing the rest, ice, compression, elevation thing, but really I have no idea how bad it is. I went to the internet for advice, and some say to put weight on it, and others say if you do, you could make it worse. I can walk on it, only it is very hard.

Any thoughts on this from others who had a similar experience would be appreciated.

Add my name to the list that say Go to the Doc! In the meantime, let people wait on you so you're not walking around as much. And if you have an ace bandage or elastic ankle support, wear it until you get to the docs. Your ankle is very vulnerable and weak right now so needs the support the compression provides

Good luck!!.

OK. The collective voice is to see your MD! My DH injured his ankle coaching soccer and walked around on it for a couple of days before he relented and went to the doctor. He had a hair line fracture. The boot helped a lot, and he recovered. You will too.

I'm truly sorry! emoticon

Sorry to hear you are in the wars! I really think you should get it checked out! Make sure you have some fruit or veg with Vitamin C in it as it helps in healing muscles that are torn.
Hope its better soon

One more vote for checking it out with your doctor or going to urgent care. Hopefully it is just a sprain and ice and rest will take care of it. If it's worse than that, you need to know.

I agree with all other ladies, you should see the doctor, but keep applying ice to avoid swelling.
Hope it is only muscle sprain and you get well very soon. emoticon

Definitely see a doctor if you are having a hard time walking. If you do have a break -- walking on it is not advised.

    Carol,
I agree with everybody else. I would go to Emergency but maybe it's different in the U.S. To go to my doctor, I would need an appointment. She would probably tell me to go to Emergency as well.
Good luck with it!!!

I'm sorry you're in pain! I have had similar experiences but I have osteoporosis and that usually means I have fractured or broken something. As already mentioned, you need to see your doctor and let him decide whether you need x-rays, an MRI etc. I hope it's just a bad sprain but if not, you don't want to make it worse by not getting proper treatment. All the best. emoticon

You should see a doctor and have it x-rayed. You can break small bones in the foot and ankle by twisting it. If it is just a sprain, ice it and wrap with Ace bandage. Stay off it as much as possible and ice, ice, ice. Good luck and God bless.

Proud of self---spark-wise and bra-wise

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Well, I did well yesterday, calorie wise, and exercise wise. And this morning I got all my bills paid, and checkbook balanced. Amazing!!

Now I have to do the same thing for my mom's accounts.

I gave in and got a larger bra. It feels so much better. I was really kidding myself trying to squeeze into a bra that was too small, to try to make myself look smaller, while flesh is dripping out of the sides of it.

The truth is I bought the bra for my mom but it was too big. (she has shrunk) and so I tried it on, and it fit so well and was so comfortable. No underwire.

Now, I feel yesterday has been a course in honesty.

This so funny! I JUST unhooked my very tight, uncomfortable bra before I sat down to read your blog! If I hadn't been out and about today, I wouldn't even be wearing the darn thing.
And mine is new! I just put on a little weight in my midriff and now it fit's like a tourniquet.

Great job on the calories and the exercise! Keep up the good work!

Congratulations on your honesty and taking control, and becoming comfortable. When a bra doesn't fit, or pants are too tight, we feel horrible, but we want to look nice, and think others will know what size were in.

Heck, most people don't care especially men, they just want you in a good mood, and making them happy .

I totally do this carolee, with bras and with my pants. I squeeze in and overflow on top because I DON'T want to buy the size up.

I just ended up having to buy a size up recently, which is in large part, why I'm here on SparkPeople trying to get healthy again.
