I'm back...

So....I've been away from SP for awhile. I had my injury back in March, had surgery in April....and finally got released by my PT to start getting active again! So I'm trying to get back on track with my food tracking. Except now- the thing I am struggling with is EXTREME back pain- so much so, that I had an X-Ray of my back done yesterday. I'm frustrated and tired of pain and health issues and that's why I am trying to get back on track! But when you feel miserable....it's hard to stay focused on your "program". I am so discouraged. Has anyone else encountered this?? One health/pain issue after another? I'm sure a lot of it will clear up once I get active again (which, I am trying to do....but still...) and when I get back on track with my eating habits once again.

    Yes, pain is no fun. It is like a vicious cycle. You are in pain because you need to lose weight and you can't lose weight because you can't exercise because you are in pain! My suggestion is to do what you can. Even if you are only moving 5 minutes a day, that is 5 minutes! Then hopefully you can keep adding to that a little at a time. You can do this! We can do this!!

    Back pain is different category than my issues but I can understand your frustrations. I injured my knee last Fall/Winter. I had surgery in May and finally have clearance to hit the gym. I want to pick up from where I left off but I just can't. I lost some strength, my leg still is healing, and it swells after exercise. It's frustrating when I think about what I can't do and how it aches. On the other hand, if I compare myself to 2 weeks after surgery when I couldn't walk without crutches--and every single activity of daily life was a struggle, painful, or even impossible--well then my progress is awesome! Sometimes we have to retrain our thinking or our only conclusion is to be frustrated. You know when a wound is healing how much it itches and is annoying? Well, despite the fact that I am a mad scratcher, I get excited because it's healing.

I hope your recovery and the info from your doctor are all about how you are healing. I am not trying to minimize your pain at all but the frustration part can be conquered, of that I am sure. Honestly if you can't do much more than your PT exercises that's fine. Listen to your body. The fact that you are making efforts to track food is HUGE (you don't need to be perfect here either). I wished I had kept that going. I gained almost 15 pounds during my 12 week recovery. It's what we are doing that counts. Pat yourself on your back, gently of course, for all the progress you made and your resilience during a difficult and painful time. You are doing great and you will do it at the healing pace your body needs.

Craving weird things....

Ok- I don't know if this is a "healing" thing I am going through...or what....but I am craving really strange things. It's mostly vinegar- we have different varieties of vinegar and if I could get away with it, I would drink it straight! We do have a pickle jar that has no pickles in it but left over pickle juice and I have been taking swigs out of that. My honey thinks it is I am needing the electrolytes.

    I am not sure why you are having these cravings, but indulging in them should not harm you. As long as you feel content and use moderation, I do not think there should be a problem with this.

Sorry so long in noticing this blog but I just got back from a family vacation/celebration and finally having a chance to catch up with good friends. Have a good rest of the week and a healthy weekend!

Master Cleanse

Has anyone done a "master cleanse"? Thought about trying it, but afraid people would get hurt in the process from lack of food.... emoticon

    SP does not recommend it. You have good bacteria in your body that help make needed vitamins. Cleanes messes up their balance. I would NOTdo one!

I want to exercise, but....

Many of you know that I would LOVE to be out there walking, bicycling, etc...

However, due to me being hit by a car, my ACL is torn.

How does one exercise with limited space in their house (and living with a cranky old man to boot), and not having the finances to be able to go to a pool?

Ideas?

I'm frustrated with my lack of being able to get active again.

    Could you get pool exercise prescribed for you? Just thinking...
Does your local school have a pool open to the public? I can imagine your frustration in not being able to exercise. Hope everything else is ok. Did you find a job?

    I need to have a follow up with him. Right now, my ortho's first concern is SURGERY (boooo). So, I'm kinda playing it by ear. As far as the pool idea, thanks!

    Are there exercises that your doctor recommends while you are healing?

Are there lower cost options for using a pool? (I go to our local Parks Dept pool, not during open swim, but during adult exercise fitness class. It's the cheapest option in my town)

Hope you can find something that will HELP your knee and not hurt it!

    I recently did some unfriending...rather than feel guilty about it, I actually felt good about it! Same thing--drama, drama, drama, yawwwnn! Good luck finding a happier headspace in that part of your life!

    Take those dramatic people off of your news feed!! Make it a safe zone, just like you make your house a safe zone!! Trust me it works! hover over them and it will show you a little list. Just uncheck news feed! They are still your friends you just don't have to see their garbage & they're none the wiser! :) Good luck!
