I started SP 6/19/07 and lost 75 pounds the first year using the site. I didn't start exercising until I had lost about 50 pounds because it was too hard on my knees. When I finally started exercising, I started by walking on my treadmill for 5 minutes 3 times a week. I have asthma and my lungs felt like they were going to explode even with only moving for 5 minutes. But I stuck to it and worked my way up to 30 minutes a day. I then went shopping for a stationary bike or a recumbent bike that would be gentler on my knees, but could not find one that I could use because I have decreased range of motion in my left knee because I fractured my patella years ago. That was a real disappointment so I looked around for something else I could get and ended up buying an elliptical because my orthopedic Dr told me that using this was easier on my joints.
I used the elliptical and my treadmill to do my 20 minutes a day exercise and started a streak which I did for 60 days in a row. I was so proud of myself. Because I used the treadmill more often because it was easier and more familiar to me, my knee really started to hurt. I got my first cortisone shot in my left knee and then I could exercise again. When the shot wore off a few months later, I again had tremendous pain when I did any weight bearing activities, so I stopped exercising. Then I got bronchitis and because of my asthma I could not even attempt to exercise. So the months started to add up when I was not exercising and the weight started to creep back on and my bad eating patterns started to come back with a vengeance.
I am a binge eater and I have a life pattern of dieting or binge eating. These are the only two ways that I live my life. But even though I started to binge again and did not exercise for about 3 months, I never stopped Sparking because I knew that I would eventually dust myself off and get back on the wagon. It was only 3 months this time, usually my binge is longer up to 1 or 2 years. But what I am learning on Spark tells me that I am not perfect and I do not have to use all or nothing behavior. If I eat bad things one day, it doesn't mean I'm finished and to give up. This is a lifestyle change and I know what I need to eat and now even when I am bingeing, I eat a healthy breakfast and lunch. I just consume way too many calories in the evening from the wrong types of foods.
Well, I am back on track. January 1st, I started back on staying within my calorie range and today I started back on exercising on my elliptical. I did 5 mins at two separate times. The first time my lungs again felt like they would explode. But when I did the second 5 minutes, it was easier on my lungs. I plan to start another streak and initially will shoot for 10 mins on my elliptical for however long I can do my streak.
My goals for 2009:
1. I will love and nurture myself with non-edibles.
2. I will lose 50 pounds by 01/01/10.
3. I will exercise 30 minutes 5 days a week. (going to work up to this one)
4. I will be binge free on most days of the week.
