Even the smallest death diminishes...

Thursday, April 22, 2010

The day dawned softly blue and sunny - another beautiful day ahead. Then I noticed two male wood ducks fighting furiously at the edge of the pond. I got out my binoculars and saw they were fighting over the dead body of the sole female wood duck who had been gracing our pond for the last couple of weeks. One male was trying to peck the body, and the other was trying to shelter the female with his wings spread out, pecking furiously with his beak.
I let the dog out on the deck, which broke them up and they flew off farther out into the pond. With a heavy heart, I went out and fished the little duck out of the water and put her into a bag to take to the dump. It seems like such an inglorious end to such a beautiful creature. She had just been sunning herself on a rock in my garden yesterday.
In this part of the country, it is a real treat to have a nesting wood duck pair. Last year for the first time we had a pair that had 7 babies of which 5 lived - cute little fuzzies that soon grew up to start getting the distinctive crests on their heads.
(Sigh) - just a reminder to live each day, drink in the beauty and keep pushing forward. Sorry for the sad post.

Your writing of this event is very eloquent, albeit sad. Nature is amazing to witness first hand. I spend many hours on the Mississippi River and enjoy the mallards, egrets, bald eagles, herons, pelicans, etc. They are all gifts for us to enjoy, precious and beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

How interesting that you got a glimpse of nature that most will never experience. My sadness is for the mate left behind who was defending his partner even after her death. I hope that there are a few other pairs elsewhere on the pond. They are beautiful ducks! May you make the most of this precious day!

Oh I am so sorry. I say a small prayer every time I see a dead animal anywhere, especially on the side of a road. When I was little I wanted to go around the world and bury all of the animals that had died by the side of a road. I used to want to hold small funerals for them. Makes me sad even today.

Cape Cod Spring Sunshine

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

But, I almost missed it! Ever have one of those days when you plan to do one thing and you keep getting sidetracked? I wanted to put in some good gardening time, as the weather was going to be perfect. Somehow, I kept getting caught up in indoor things.
Finally, around 11 AM, my dog, Riley was making her distinctive, "I see my best friend, Bella, (neighborhood dog) outside and I want to go see her" yelping. So, I got her leash and took her out for a little play time while I talked to Bella's mom, Mary Alyce. It was just the break I needed to extricate myself from the house. As soon as they left, I suited up in my unbecoming gardener gear and rolled up my sleeves.
Two hours later, I had accomplished a lot of pruning, weeding and spreading of weed deterrent. Felt good!

Stationary bike

Saturday, April 17, 2010

Put together my new bike today (good project for a rainy Saturday afternoon). The store had offered to put it together for me for the mere sum of $250. About an hour into the job, that was sounding pretty good. But, we persevered and I took my inaugural ride as dusk fell. I did 5 miles in 22 minutes. So, I'm not burning things up...
The bike was my reward for losing 20 lbs.; so it will always be a good reminder of what is possible. It's located in front of the TV, across the room, where I can ride and watch TV or at least get on it during commercials... every minute counts!

I have a bike in my bedroom, with a TV right there. I try to ride it 4-5 times a week and get to the gym for the treadmill or doing outside stuff on other days.. It's nice and quiet and a good way to get in a good workout without having to leave the house in bad weather, or when it's just easier to stay home! Good luck with it!!

Good for you! Tuesday is cross-training day for me. The bike is in the cellar...it just doesn't go with the furnishings! I use the ipod to keep me pumped while I ride. Have fun!

Skimpy Johnnies and other news from the medical front....

Friday, April 16, 2010

I went for my annual mammogram this morning to the same imagining center I've gone to for the last several years. They only carry one size johnnie ("normal"), which has to be tied in front. I have always dreaded this, even though the only other patients are women, because the darn johnnie never closed properly. I used to get very creative with magazine placement so that the "girls" didn't get too much exposure.
Well today, I went in chin up because I thought I might just fit into the johnnie without gaping. I get into the changing room and see a notice that says they now carry a larger size.... wouldn't you know. I debated for a minute and then opted for the larger size, which could have been a burhka in another life. I luxuriated in total cover-up mode the whole time. Next year I'm trying for normal....
As I'm on medical, good news! At my check-up with my regular doc yesterday, he decided to cut my BP meds to a half dose (pill splitter, here I come!). One of my goals is to decrease and/or eliminate the meds I am on; so this is a good step, especially as I've only just begun my work on a healthier lifestyle. Makes me think greater things (than fitting into a johnnie) are possible.

Thanks for the chuckle. I never thought of the johnnie as a bhurka!! Great news about your medications being cut back. You are experiencing all the things they promise will happen with healthy eating at weight loss! Congrats to you!

Go figure...

Thursday, April 15, 2010

I'd like to say that I've been eating perfectly and working out hard 6 days a week ---- not. I just weighed myself on Tuesday for a 1.5 pound loss after being away on vacation for over a week. I was pleased with that.
Being a creature of habit, I decided to weigh myself this morning to get back on my regular weekly weigh-in day. Since Tuesday, minus 3.5 pounds! I can't explain this, unless I really had lost more on vacation and was retaining water on Tuesday - or - the last weigh-in was the edge of one of my slow plateaus and I didn't know it.
Or - when I was away in New Mexico, I went to a funky little museum up in the Sandia Mountains called Tinkertown. It had one of those automated fortune tellers, that for a quarter gives you a slip of paper with your fortune. Mine said I would shortly receive an unexpected gift and to grasp it. So, I'm holding on tight to this 3.5 loss. I don't know where it came from, but I'm taking it and running with it.
I realize in the midst of my elation, that I need to remember this day when I do eat just right and work out religiously and see no loss or even a gain on the scales. Life is ying and yang - sometimes explicable, sometimes not.
That being said, I have now hit the 5th checkpoint in my 14 point plan - have lost 10%+ of my body weight. A great goal achieved, and my doctor will be pleased too. I haven't decided what my reward will be. I'll think of something....

Good job and a great motivator. I thought I was doing well by gaining only 1 pound on vacation, but you actually lost. Terrific! If you still have your paper fortune, you should post it as a visual reminder. Especially for those days, as you say, where you're doing everything perfect but can't make the scale budge.

Nice Job!
