Toiling in the Garden

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

I decided to ignore the housework and enjoy the sunshine and do some gardening this afternoon. It was so pleasant - slight chill in the air so I didn't get too hot. I started attacking the little weeds which came up easily because the soil is quite wet and they don't have strongly established root systems. It made me think about the future, when that wonderful day comes when I will be trying to maintain rather than lose weight. I'll need to attack the "weeds" (read added pounds here) early when they are small and easy to dislodge. I know some people use +5 pounds as the cut point when they start actively addressing a weight gain. Knowing me, I should probably make that +3.
I do some of my best thinking in the garden...

I am looking forward to working in the garden again this year. It really helped me to be successful last summer. I love how you related those extra pounds to the we!

Navigating the Battlefield

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

I hadn't been able to weigh myself last week, as I was on vacation. With some trepidation, I stepped on the scale this morning, concerned that I was not strictly following the Spark plan for the past week. I was surprised (and delighted) to see a 1.5 pound loss.
I've now reached one of my milestones - 20 pounds lost in total. I already selected my "reward" - a stationary bike, which I will put in front of my TV to get extra exercise at night.
This weight range is where I have typically gotten stuck in recent years; so I view the next 10 or so pounds as a real battlefield, with lots of mines and tough terrain ahead. Wish me luck!

I don't know too many people who lose weight on their vacation. If you can do that, you can break the 20 plateau! Congrats on your good work!

Congratulations on your weight loss. If you can do that on vacation, you have internalized a lot of good eating habits. Good luck on the next 10 pounds.

Back from Vacation

Monday, April 12, 2010

Back on Cape Cod after a great trip to New Mexico. It's been about a week since I've been able to log onto SparkPeople. I missed you guys!
The highlight of my trip was visiting the Acoma Pueblo, which is about 50 miles west of Albuquerque. It is in a remote area to say the least, high on a mesa with unbelievable vistas - still inhabited. As I stood amongst the pueblo buildings, looking at the sun and clouds playing on the rock formations across the valley below, I got such a strong sense of continuity of land and people and spirit. It was a wellspring of strength for all that I will do. I know I will be able to draw on it in the days and even years ahead.

Another long walk in Boston

Sunday, April 04, 2010

Took the "T" to Boston Commons around 11 AM. It was great to see all the people out - some in Easter finery, some in shorts, and everywhere in between. Lemonade vendors, nut vendors, ballon men - children playing in the dry Frog Pond. Strolled over to Boston Public Gardens - overheard a father telling his very young son about the midnight ride of Paul Revere (must have been in the spirit of upcoming Patriots' Day) in reference to the large statue in the park facing Commonwealth Avenue. Only problem was, the statue is of George Washington. I think the kid was too young to read; so no harm, no foul. Made me smile. I was disappointed the swan boats weren't running yet (next time). Walked up Commonwealth Avenue admiring the brownstones and the flowering trees in the sunshine. Turned by the cross street by the Prudential Center and ambled back down Newbury Street. Love all the specialty shops and sidewalk cafes. There was an all male folk dance group in the middle of the street in front of one of the church's. They had jingle bells ( a lot) on their shins - not sure the derivation of that. Stopped for lunch at P.F. Chang's. Split some infamous chicken lettuce wraps and feasted on Kung Pao Shrimp (ate about 2/3's). Walked back to Seaport District to burn off some calories ( about 4 miles today). What a glorious day!
Early to bed tonight. Plane to New Mexico takes off way early - 6 AM!

Loved it. I did the same thing the week before. It is a wonderful city to walk in. Tell me, did you see any signs of The Easter Parade? Way back when I remember going to my aunt and uncles on Comm Ave and walking in the Easter Parade which amounted to everyone strolling down the park in their Easter finery. Hope you are enjoying your trip.

Have a great week!

Three Cheers for The Salty Dog!

Saturday, April 03, 2010

This afternoon and evening I am in Boston. A friend and I took a great walk along the harbor and then headed over to Quincy Market late in the afternoon. For those of you who haven't had the pleasure, Quincy Market, in addition to being a hub of shopping has every delectable treat you can think of, artfully displayed to be as appealing as possible.
We admired the beauty of the food displays but resisted temptation (if only because it was so crowded and lines were l-o-n-g). We went outside and got a table at a restaurant called The Salty Dog. As I looked at the menu, concerned like so many restaurants the offerings would be fried or loaded with butter, etc., I found what they called Protein Power meals. Three different meals where the protein was steamed and served with steamed mixed veggies and coleslaw without mayo. They each were only 300 calories per meal. Perfect! I got the steamed scrod entree- delish. I was so pleased to be able to find a tasty, reasonable caloric meal and enjoy the ambience of Boston springtime - didn't feel I had compromised my experience at all. My only question is why don't more restaurants do this?

Awesome...I was ate there once, but I'm that whatever I had was fried! Maybe when I go to Boston in June I'll try out the Potein Power meals! Thanks for sharing.

GO SOX!

Wow, that seems almost too good to be true. Wish more restaurants would follow suit.
