Getting my health back on track!

Tuesday, August 26, 2014

Lots have happened since I broke my ankle. It has totally healed even though the Dr said I wouldn't get all movement back! I love our PT team, they're awesome people!

Last year I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes, meaning my numbers were too high for a non-diabetic and too low to be diagnosed with diabetes. But I bought a meter and began testing myself. Then when I broke my anke in Feb, I put myself on the Atkins Diet. Wow, has that made a difference. I have lost 57 lbs since February 15th, I look a lot better and have more energy plus my blood sugar numbers have dropped some! I want my blood sugar levels to get back to normal, non diabetic numbers. I can do this, I just have to eat very low carb foods. Whenever I eat sweets, pastas, rice, corn, potatoes, dairy (with the exception of low carb yogurt and ricotta cheese) my blood sugar numbers climb to unacceptable levels. So I know I can control my BS levels with my diet and exercise without the use of drugs...so far!!!

This last month I've been having a hard time sticking with my diet so I've doubled my efforts and found some help here on Spark People! I'm claiming back my health and staying on track!!! Yeah!!!! emoticon

I broke my ankle today!

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Yes, I'll be out of commission for a while. I was bringing in the groceries at noon today and slipped on ice and snow on the stairs, yeah, that was painful, lol. I broke my fibia on the left side of my ankle on my left leg. At the hospital they put soft/hard splint on my leg/ankle. On Mondy I need to make an appt to see an orthopedic surgeon.

Well that means no walking or cardio and only upper body exercises!!! **Sigh**

Just dropped by your page and catching up a bit on what's been happening in your life.

So sorry to hear about your accident. Sounds painful. I can well imagine it is discouraging not to be able to do your usual walking/cardio. I know the difficult time I would have switching to a routine which eliminated what is working for me. That being said, don't be discouraged. Stay focused on what you can do in the mean time because it's more than nothing.

Praying you will experience a speedy and complete recovery, Ruth Ann.

I'm so sorry to hear about your accident and wish you a speedy recovery. Do EXACTLY what the docs tell you to do and don't try to rush your recuperation time!
Luckily, Spark has several seated videos. I use them on the days I have trouble walking and standing.
You are in my prayers.

Goals: Reflection & Going Forward

Sunday, February 09, 2014

This is my blog about how I did in January and what my plans/goals are for February.

January was simply put, a complete failure. I'm not down on myself, just being factual. To quote an old nursery rhyme, "He ate and he ate and he ate some more. He ate 6 cows and 20 sheep and chickens by the score.." I have just been in a diet funk, so to speak. Not only did I gain weight, instead of losing, my fitness fell to pieces and I didn't drink much water and didn't do too good on my freggies either. Enough said!!!

February has been full of changes for me. I'm going to have to break through this diet fog I'm in, for one thing. I bought a new book and have been reading it. It's called, The No-Excuses Diet by Jonathan Roche. I just started today, so I can't say how it will help or not, but it is a start.

For my goals, I'm going to start out real slow because everything has so fallen out of proportion.
Water - 6 cups a day
Freggies - 3 a day
Walking/Cardio - 15 minutes a day/5 days a week

That's all I'm going to shoot for right now...as I progress each week, I will up the ante!!!

Wish me motivation and stick-to-it-ness! lol

Hang in there I'm thinking about you and saying a prayer.

Ruth-Ann, I am glad that you have looked back on January, reviewed the mistakes so you can use them as learning experiences and have stepped forward into February determined not to repeat those past mistakes. I like the SMART goals you have set for February. I have no doubt that you will end February on a successful note.

My Christmas - 2013

Sunday, December 29, 2013

We had a wonderful Christmas this year. I had 5 sons (out of 7), my only daughter, 1 son-in-law, 2 daughters-in-law and my 3 grandchildren come over. They came from NC, PA and NY. Including my dh and myself, we had 14 for the holidays!! We made cookies, baked delicious snacks, played games, went shopping, watched Christmas movies and went to family parties! We even went to the National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY! I think my grown children had more fun than the grandkids!!! We also went and saw the 2nd movie of The Hobbit at an I-Max theater in 3-D…talk about intense!!! It was GREAT, but I still love the book better!!! I’m a J R R Tolkien fan!!!

My daughter gave me the best Christmas gift of all, the news that she’s going to have a baby!!! It will be her first and my 5th grandchild. She’s due August 1st. (I also have another grandchild due May 1st. It will by my dil’s 3rd child) So by winter next year I ought to have 5 grandchildren!! What fun!!! My dd’s husband is a doctor-to-be as he graduates this June from Medical School. Then in July they’ll be moving to San Antonio, Texas for his residency as he is in the military and that’s where they’re sending him. Needless to say, I’ll be planning a trip down there this fall for the baby!!! I’m so excited!

As far as my diet/nutrition/fitness for the holidays, I'm pretty pleased with how I did. I didn't go way off my plan, but I did have snacks and treats as well.

That was my Christmas! I hope each of you had just as great a Christmas as I did!!!
