How to fit in more exercise

Tuesday, March 20, 2012

Just sitting here thinking to myself how I can manage to fit in more exercise in my busy life. I know that for me dieting alone will not keep me on this weight loss journey.

I also want to increase my exercise so I can be fitter and healthier. As spring is here the motivation should be greater to get out and about more often.

Here are a few tips that I find help me to get exercise, some which I came up with myself and some which I have come across along the way.

It is good for me to write these things down so I can read them all in one place as it is easy to forget!

1. Prioritize exercise
When I say that I have no time to exercise, what I am really saying is that it is not high on my list of priorities!

So I need to put it on my list of 'things to do' not on my list of 'things to do if I have time'

2. Think exercise all the time.
Where ever I am I need to think how I can increase my energy expenditure.

I already bring shopping bags instead of a shopping cart. Not alone does this give my arms a good workout but it also makes me more conscious of what I put in the bags!

When ever I drop off my kids at an activity, I fit in a walk while waiting for them to finish. Beats sitting and reading a magazine.

3. Make all activity count
I figured out this one recently - if I come home from work and leave my work shoes on I do everything much slower.

My new plan is to wear my runners and comfortable clothes all the time when not out or at work. Not alone do I do the house work with more energy and faster, but I am also ready to head off for a walk should the opportunity arise!!

I am going to concentrate on these three points for this week and will update this as I find more.

Give yourself the Edge

Thursday, March 15, 2012

I subscribe to a few inspiration emails to keep me upbeat daily - part of my self improvement agenda!

One is from Simon Sinek - notes to inspire. His offering this morning was:

"It's better to go slowly in the right direction than go speeding off in the wrong direction"

To me this totally explains my weight loss/gain efforts. I either forget about it and put on a stone a month (only a very slight exaggeration) or I can put some effort in and, even if I only lose a few pounds a month, I am going in the right direction.

For every pound I lose I think - this is so much better than putting on a pound.

So we should celebrate every small sign that we are going in the right direction (not with food though).

It also reminded me of a book I once read - The Slight Edge by Jim Rohn. I think everybody should read it.

The basic gist of it is that we never stand still. We go in one direction or the other. That is definitely true of my weight loss journey.

He goes on to say that the steps we need to do every day to achieve our goal are actually very simple. But not everyone does them - why?

Because they are also easy not to do!!

A perfect example is the advice on this site to start with ten minutes exercise every day. Sounds easy to do? but it is also easy not to do!

Remember this the next time you are dithering about doing your ten minutes. It may sound like very little and it can easily be dismissed as insignificant but the cumulative effect of ten minutes done every day over the course of a month or even a year is very significant.

The cumulative effect of not doing it is also significant.

Hope everyone is having a fantastic day - going in the right direction!!

Treating these pounds with the respect they deserve

Tuesday, March 13, 2012

I think part of my problem is that I feel like I haven’t much to lose. Only 22lbs. Doesn’t sound much! But it is a stone and a half!! I need to take this more seriously.

Having already lost two and a half stone I keep thinking in the back of my mind that I have done it already so I can do it again.

The question is when?

Well there is no time like the present – as Nike says – ‘just do it’.

If I think I can do it at some vague unspecified time in the future, I can do it now!

I need to treat these pounds with the respect they deserve and knock them on the head.
I know I can do it.

Well - the last thing you want is to see them come back to haunt you! You worked hard to get those pounds off - you feel better, you feel proud . . .stick with it, and give those old pounds a few more lost friends to hang around with!

I Need Motivation to Exercise

Monday, March 12, 2012

I am very inconsistent with my exercise habits. But now I am at the stage that I know I have to make it part of my life both for health reasons and to look better. I need to tone up – enough of Spanx!!

It is not that I haven’t been thinking about it for a long time. I have just made an inventory of exactly what I have at my disposal to get going:

Stepper
Balance board
Fitness Ball
Wii fit
10 minute bootcamp DVD
Pilates for weight loss DVD
Pilates on the WII
10 minute fitness ball DVD
Spark people 28 day boot camp videos
Skipping rope (with my 6 year old teacher and coach, Emily)
Cross Country Ski machine
Bicycle
My daughters pony which needs exercising (my new exercise buddy, and I thought I liked exercising alone!!)
And finally my legs!! – to walk and run.

Yes – I am getting notions in my middle age and would like to complete a 5k before I am fifty.

Also – and I have never said this one out loud - I would like to compete in the mother’s race at my children’s sport day. They would so love that! Maybe I will – it is in three months – time to get in training! Spark people have really changed my vocabulary!

Yes I can and I will!!

Ps I have just joined the 28 day boot camp team and completed my first video!

Yay good for you! You have the tools and want/need. For me the first week, for me, was the toughest. Then it just becomes a routine and one day for some "reason" you can't get a good workout in you will feel like a blob, which will get you up the next morning and get you moving.

Just force yourself to get into the routine!!!

There are some good articles on SP about starting a running routine.
