The Trip Of A Lifetime

Monday, September 05, 2011

Well folks, the time has FINALLY arrived!!

As some of you may know, i have spent the last few months organising one of THE biggest things i have EVER done in my life, and that is travelling across the entirety of The United States Of America, all the way from coast to coast...On a train!!

That's right, i start off in New York and then it's on to Washington DC, then Baltimore, then Chicago, then Denver, then San Francisco and finally Los Angeles and Hollywood (always knew i would make it to Hollywood one day emoticon) I will be spending roughly a week or so in each of the above places and travelling for an average total of 6 to 7 weeks (although this may turn into longer, you never know what the future and unchartered territories may bring!!)

My plans (at the end of it all) are to write a witty and informative book about the diversities of American people and the many varied cultures from coast to coast, plus a true diary of my adventures and the crazy situations that i am sure to find myself in...Something wacky ALWAYS happens to me wherever and whenever i travel somewhere emoticon

The BIG thing about all of this, is that i am going to be doing it COMPLETLEY gizmo free!! That means, no cell phone, no laptop, no email, no phone numbers...No interuptions - just me and my inch thick itinerary that i have been compiling over the past few months, details of the hotels that i will be staying in, tours that i have booked and train tickets that i have purchased. Other than that, it's just me, a bag, a camera, a notepad and a pen and the open railroad. (I must remember to pack my pedometer and MP3 player - ok, there are a few little gizmo's involved!!)

I really wanted to go back to basics on this adventure to prove that (especially for someone like me who runs his own business and relys on and uses computers every single day) it is not always neccessary to have technological things at hand 24/7. I will be meeting people on a face to face basis, right the way across America, and reinventing good old fashioned one to one conversation and banter. I heard somewhere that that was how things were once, before the invention of cell phones, laptops etc...Back in the good old days!! emoticon

I leave this week on my adventure of a lifetime and i plan on getting completley lost in translation for the next 6 weeks or so, so unfortunately sparking may be off the cards for the forseeable future (although if i spot an internet cafe somewhere i may post a quick update - although that may be defeating the purpose of having no gizmos with me), but nonetheless i will be sure to post tons of pictures and a big blog when i'm done emoticon

So all that's left to say is keep sparking folks, hope everyone is well and in good spirits and i'll see y'all when i'm back.

P.s...Feel free to buy my book once it's written and published, i'm sure it will be a real pee your pants funny and informative read (I'll even sign it for you!!) emoticon

Best wishes and bon voyage...

WOW! How lucky! I wish I could afford to do something like that. Though, I'd rather go to some other country than my own. I'd actually like to go on a cruise all around the world. Someday - maybe! A dream is a dream!

Any ways, good luck, and I look forward to your updates!

Hurricane Irene (Stand strong East Coast)

Saturday, August 27, 2011

Sending a big shout out to North Carolina, New York and the entire East Coast - If the hurricane has already hit your area then here's hoping that you have not sustained too much damage or loss.

For all those in New York and surrounding areas who are about to be caught up in the storm, my blessings go out to you all - Stand strong, stay sheltered with your families, stay inside and most of all stay safe.

Thinking of you all during this time.

Remember when you were young...?

Thursday, August 18, 2011

...and nothing mattered?

Other than playing frisbee on the beach.

Riding your bicycle down the street.

Playing marbles in the gutter with your mates.

Your mum and dad taking you on your first memorable holiday.

Dreaming about being a fireman, or a lawyer, or a rock star?

?

When did everything get so complicated?

None of us are given a rule book at birth, our lives between childhood and adulthood are what gives us charachter - these are the lessons that define us and make us who we ALL are.

So what if you are unfit? So what if you are annoyed at yourself? So what if you do not have the greatest job in the world - does anyone? Brad Pitt originally wanted to be a carpenter. Al Pacino was originally a barman. Jeniffer Aniston would never have got anywhere without her Greek father's influence.

So do yourselves, your family, your friends and everyone else a favour - FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELVES!!

We are only here once. We are born, we have the part in the middle where we are supposed to live and have fun and then we die - There is no coming back, regardless of whatever people may think.

This is OUR life - So live it!!

Life IS simple if you make it simplistic for yourselves - Remember when we were kids :)

Stay positive Sparkpeople

Too true! Have you ever read or seen the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder? I think this is pretty close to the theme of that play : Live our lives, every, every minute...Hope you are doing well.

So much of what you say is true, but sadly at times in our lives things/people/situations come along that we have no control over! All one can do, is try to remain focused, cut out the negatives in life, thoughts/people and replace with the positives! Any form of negativity is a drain!! I am at present clearing the negatives out of my life and replacing them with positives! I am a realist and it will take a little time, but it will and is happening!!!

Thanks for the blog my friend. I WILL catch u L8r.

The World At War In 2011

Tuesday, August 09, 2011

I often get accused of speaking my mind and talking about certain subjects that are refered to as "Taboo" and should be seen and not spoken about by others. This is why the world we live in is going to hell in a handbasket, because far too many people are either scared, ignorant or just do not care about the state of the world we are living in today.

The phrase "See No Evil, Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil", has never been more poigniant than it is today. Look around you at what is happening where you live, or where your friends or family live...

London, England and surrounding areas are being destroyed, LITERALLY DESTROYED on a MASSIVE scale from the riots of the past few days. Shops are being looted and destroyed. Long running businesses, cars and homes are being set on fire. People are literally terrified to leave their houses and go out onto the streets. The police are allowing looters, thugs and criminals to take control of the streets because they are being overpowered.

There was a 5000 strong police force at the recent royal wedding, due to the fear of a terrorist attack - there are (at time of writing) 1400 police present during these riots!!

Do the math!!

This is because the government has made police cuts as well, in order to try and rectify the current defecit. What a stroke of genius eh?

Our children, our mothers and fathers, our families and friends are being sent to countries where they are trying to fight with all their hearts and might, a war we can never win, and why? So that maybe our future sons and daughters can live a life of peace, instead of this 24/7 brutality, fear and violence.

These are not the only wars that are currently going on in OUR world. There are also the wars on poverty, the economy, homelessness, employment, pension cuts, NHS cuts.., The list goes on and on and on.

But if it isn't happening to you!! Then the easiest thing in the world to do is to turn a blind eye and say "Well, thank god that isn't happening over here" or "I'm glad that isn't happening to me or MY family"

Well here's a newsflash!! - IT IS HAPPENING TO US ALL, and in one way or another it is affecting our every day existence. There is no easy answer nor solution to what is happening in OUR world and it defies belief that we are so far returning to the stone age in the way that we are living.

Where is the justice when all these footballers, pop stars, movie stars etc... are earning millions of pounds and dollars a year - When there are SO many people out of work, families struggling to pay the bills and human beings in countries all across the world...Struggling to survive!!

There are people out there who are happy to turn a blind eye, as there have always been and always will be, and this is the reason why we are in the state of affairs we are in right now.

No longer can we afford to "Be greatful that it isn't happening to us"

No longer can we be THAT naive to imagine that things will eventually get better one day through a simple miracle, or by these horrors simply fading away.

No longer can we continue to pass the blame for everything.

And no longer can we afford to sit in silence and simply HOPE things get better.

We vote!! Why? And what exactly is it that we are voting for? Does anybody really know? Or is it because the Prime Minister or President of your country paid a visit to your town one sunny Sunday afternoon and promised you more employment, more government funding, or that things are going to change for the better?

Well, things are changing - AND NOT FOR THE BETTER!!

I was in London last week as some of you will know, and i can only be thankful that i was there then and not now. What made me choose to go last week and not this week i have no idea?

Fate? Is that what it was?

The top and bottom of it is that i could be dead right now if i had gone a week later than i did and that is a terrifying thought.

So some people do not need to like the honesty in my blogs, and some people do not need to read them neither (I would say that it is a free country and we are free to say and do what we please - but unfortunately that is a complete load of rubbish in this day and age!!)

We need to get our priorities straight and in order and stop looking the other way and hopeing that things will simply get better of their own accord. The world is NOT going to change itself. Only WE as people have the opportunity to make a difference. Surely after hundreds and hundreds of years of evolution and so called "lessons learned" we can not be THAT naive?

The London riots are getting worse and apparently it has been mentioned online that The Houses Of Parliament and Buckingham Palace are to be targeted next. They have even spread as far as Birmingham and Liverpool (Where i happen to have family!!)

But maybe we should just cut a blind eye and hope for the best eh? - That way, these troubles are sure to go away and we can all magically return to a land of flowers, rainbows and high paying jobs for ALL...Apparently "hindsight" is a wonderful thing.

Think about it.

This is OUR life and OUR lifetime!!

A difficult one, there are many areas of UK cities (And I imagine other western civilised cities) where many of us would not want to go late at night. I'm doing a walking marathon soon through those areas of London where the trouble has been and where my father and my BIL live. Most innocent people stayed home. It was awful, but it wasn't spread right across the UK and countryside as people think. Limited to a few usual trouble areas of other cities.

I am plpeased that the covernment are being hard line on dealing with the rioters who in many cases were just common theives.

It is a scary world, sometimes I WANT to stick my head in the proverbial sand. I can not even begin to understand the machinations of the upper echelons of government. I keep thinking of Japan, Afghanistan, and the country I love and live in. It makes me sad and angry. We can not ask, "Who is going to fix this mess?" When the answer comes it will be too late. Rock the vote, stay informed, personal responsibility, and community action. Awesome message dude.

I can ride my bike with no handle bars...

People can no longer turn their heads...the love of money and power which rules most world leaders, is now reaping the evil that fuels it. Everyone is being touched. May we all work to bring about morally healthy leaders that will better our lives.

Thank yuo for your blog--keep em coming.

I know what you mean about people saying thank goodness it's not happening to them and turning a blind eye. Sadly, a lot of those people now realise terrorist acts aren't only commited in NY. :(

I read shopkeepers in Dalston are coming together to support their community, protect their shops and homes, and deter the rioters. Also read there will be an increase from 6,000 to 16,000 cops out in force tonight. Terrible situation. I also have to wonder where on earth all these rioting youths' parents are? Hope the violence ends NOW and people can start rebuilding soon.

Wow!! Right on.....and what is up with all those riots going in London and the surrounding countryside. It is a scary thought that our world, the world we live in, has become so dangerous.

Keep on speaking your mind, for people do read it and people do listen, even though we may be slow to get up and do something about it.

A promise is a promise to a new friend..,

Wednesday, August 03, 2011

As envisaged after yesterdays strenuous walk-a-thon around London, today i have done nothing, absolutley balls all, other than relax, sit in the sun and have a few glasses of vino with my chicken lunch.

So basically nothing health related to report!!

However, on a different topic, i would like to leave a blog about a new acquaintance who goes by the name of "Fab Mo Blues" who i met today whilst relaxing.

Basically, whenever i am travelling throughout different cities on business or pleasure, i very often come across buskers/street musicians.., Some of which are amazing and some of whom aren't too good, but still deserve respect for getting out there and giving it a go.

Anyhow, whilst sitting outside a pub this afternoon with a glass of wine and chilling in the sunshine, i noticed "Fab" just down the road playing his guitar and singing - and he was quite honestly THE best street musician i have ever heard (and i saw Rodrigo Y Gabriela busking in Temple Bar in Dublin before THEY were famous) - so to say that this guy really was the best i've seen is a bold statement.., but nonetheless true.

So i got chatting with him as you do, and bought one of his cd's (which is something i rarely do, but he was just that good!!) He even signed it for me and invited me to sing a few Johnny Cash songs with him on Carnaby Street earlier on whilst he played the blues, to which i loved and the crowd seemed to enjoy as well.

So anyway, i know this has nothing to do with fitness and health, but i promised him that i would give him a mention in my next blog. Trust me, if you are into Johnny Cash, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Mississippi Delta Blues etc.., Then PLEASE check this guy out over the internet. He's from Venice but learnt his trade in New Orleans. There was even a 67 year old tourist there from New Orleans who said that he was one of the best she had ever heard as well.., High praise indeed!!

So there ya go "Fab Mo Blues" - a promise is a promise my friend. I mentioned you in my blog and i hope 1000's of people hear you and your music, as it really is THAT good and you are a top guy too.

Hope everyone is having a great day and here's a picture of the man himself
