Portion Control

Wednesday, February 23, 2011

Portion Control is a big problem for me. I know the portions I should eat and I do well when I'm on my own. But I am lucky to have a wonderful family and we share every evening meal together, as well as some lunches. So me and four men (they were children not that long ago!). I get caught up in eating like them, involved in the conversation and food, as its passing back and forth.
I tried eating just my portion and no more goes on my plate, as I quickly pop in a piece of gum. Yes, it was sugar free. I tried leaving the table to brush my teeth quickly and I've tried just leaving the table and room completely. I don't like leaving the room, it seems rude and I feel I'm missing the time of day when the guys are in a discussion mood. Guys don't share their day's experiences and feeling easily, so it is a connection time for me.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks for the suggestions! Now I have a plan - I'll focus on eating slower and immediately clear my plate & utensils and sip on a large glass of water. Why didn't I think of that? Glad you are all here with ideas!! Thanks.

I wouldn't want to leave either. That is special family time and you should stay.
Can you fill a good portion of your plate with a salad, so you're still eating but the calories are controlled ?
If not, I would put a set amount on your plate, clear it when you're finished that's it.... no more eating. You can still sit with them and talk but your not eating.
I'm so glad you get to talk with the boys .. so wonderful.

Maybe add extra veggies on your plate...that will help fill u up without too many calories.
Eating slow & putting down your food or silverware helps too.
Your lucky to have that wonderful family time with your men so enjoy!

Have a HUGE glass of water beside you and sip slowly while you're enjoying the conversation. Take your plate away as soon as you have finished your portion controlled serving, cutlery too. emoticon

YES! I heard that if you eat slowly your brain is suppose to tell you within 20 minutes whether you're full or not. My problem is that I keep right on eating. Some things that I find have helped me is willpower, smaller plates, remembering someone's unfortunate story of weight gain, or how great others feel/look because they took control. Hang in there! We can do this!
