Jefit app

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

For those of you who do strength training either at the gym or at home, check out Jefit.com and it's phone app.

I started my st again after slacking for awhile and I'm really enjoying the program and the app. It sure beats pencil and paper at the gym!

Halloween pics

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Here are some pictures of me and hubs at the Halloween party we went to this weekend. I had so much fun wearing this outfit because I normally look like...well, a teacher!

Here's a normal picture for comparison...

And my Halloween get-up

There is a great weight loss story behind this too.........when my husband and I were searching for pants for me to complete the look, I had something very specific in mind. I wanted some kind of black polyester with chrome details...studs, chains, etc. I confidently went to Value village (where I buy most of my clothes anyway) We searched up and down the racks, I was even heading into the 16-18 range out of desperation. (I'm a 12) I had been feeling really fat too, so I kept thinking big.

Anyway, we were just about to give up or compromise for plain black when I started moving down the rack in the other direction. THEN, I found the PERFECT pair of pants. They were/are epic and perfectly suited.

Sadly, I realized that they were size 9! grrr, why do the little girls always get the best outfits?!?! I decided that they were too perfect to pass up, so I'd try them on in hopes that I could modify them somehow (aka, not button them up and hide the mess with a baggy shirt)

to my jaw-dropping shock, they did right up! How did I just put on a pair of size 9s!?!? I have one 9 in my closet and they are my skinny, not lately, don't leave the house in them pants.

The look on my face must have been awesome. Even my husband (who always seems to guess correctly what would fit or not, was surprised!) They are obviously a generous size nine, I can tell they have a little bit of stretch in them, but still, I was so pleased.
So I bought the pants and they suited the costume perfectly....and now I own an epic pair of pants!

So cute! You seriously look like this girl, dweezle. She is a tattoo artist downtown where I work. She should go as you for halloween =) Back in my goth days I bought a lot of pants from hot topic. I still have a pair of jeans that are 69 inches around at each bottom. Getting up and down the stairs in those in high school was dangerous lol

a return to Ketogenic Eating

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Well, I've overcome the worst of my adjustment back to very low carb eating. This first few days are difficult as you body moves from using carbs to fuel cell activity to using ketones in the Kreb's cycle. This is why this is called a ketogenic diet. I eat 20g of carbs per day, most of those come from low-glycimic vegetables. I feel good and I'm sure I'll see a difference on the scale as I did in the past.

Before you get all finger-wagging on me now, I have done this before. It is safe and there is lots of emerging research suggesting that its actually beneficial in many surprising ways! From Feb 2011 to April 2012 I ate this way. I went to the gym regularly, did weight training, yoga, running, I commuted to work by bike daily (for 6 months of the year) on this diet (20km/day 5x/wk) and went on many hiking, canoeing, camping and other adventures with this fuel including a week-long backcountry trip. I write all of this because the first argument I hear is usually about how we NEED carbs to do anything. Obviously not.

I'm not convinced that this diet is right for everyone, but I am certain my body responds best to this way of eating. In the past year, I tried to transition back to "normal" eating and only gained and felt terrible. I'm returning to VLC and hope that I don't feel the need to go "normal" again because there is nothing normal about the amount of refined carbs...omg, all that SUGAR! ... that we eat normally.

If you're curious to learn more, there are some great blogs out there and I loved Gary Taube's book "Why We Gat Fat." Check it out!
