mall walking

I have never been a big fan of walking in the mall. It has been hot here lately, so an indoor workout is better. Also, my daughter is taking drivers education at the mall for 2 hours a day Monday through Thursday. Therefore, I have been walking the mall.

At first I didn't like it at all. The smells: pretzels, food court, and those awful stores that spray fragrances that you can smell 2 stores down. The sights: advertisements in store windows showing half dressed people and all the sale signs (I'm supposed to be walking, not shopping ). The changing temperature throughout the mall (It's really hot when I pass the food court.) The people: will they please move out of my way!

Now I've come to find some good things about walking the mall. I can walk past the pretzel stores (there are 3 in our mall) with out grabbing a free sample. If I walk earlier in the day, there are fewer people and more walkers. There are some truly special people who are willing to bring handicapped people to the mall to shop, walk, and just basically get them out. (Thank you so much to everyone who has the gift to work with these wonderful people.) There are many older people who are walking and I give them credit for continuing to exercise for their health.

Now for my attitude and that's what it is. If I have the right mind set, I can exercise wherever. I realize that not everyday will be my best nutrition and fitness day, but I'm working on my life plan. Even though I am very overweight, I can walk, I can swim, I can ride a bike, and I can do strength training. I am thankful!

    I am not a hug fan of Mall walking either but it can be a change of pace and a good place to go when the weather is bad!
I need to learn to stay away from the samples in the food court.

    That's great! We don't have a mall so I have walked in WalMart. Up and down every isle is over 1.5 miles!

    Don't worry about the odd pretzel... You have to give yourself a treat every once in a while... If you don't treat yourself you'll probably break down and go away from your diet or lifestyle anyway! This has been my experience! I alays use moderation in my thinking. You're doing fantastic! Keep up the great way of thinking and the exercise... I'll meet you at the finish line when we're at our goal weights! If you need support of any kind or would like to talk with me...     THat is a great way to get some exercise in for the day.Many malls have groups of people that walk and they will let them in to walk a certain amount of time before the stores open.Check with the mall's supervisor.Best wishes with your daughter taking driver's ED and getting her driver's license.You have the right mindset and attitude to be successful! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticonDiana

I've spent the last week on vacation. We had a great time. emoticon

When I left, I decided not to use SP at all and just take a week off. Probably not the best idea since I was still in my 2nd week of the program. I knew I would get a lot of exercise, but I didn't want to log all the fitness and nutrition.

The positives: I drank my 8 glasses of water or more everyday except one. I spent 2 hours hiking on Sleeping Bear Dunes. We walked all over Traverse City. We spent an hour + picking cherries. We walked all over (up and down some big hills) Mackinac Island from 9:30am-8pm. I even did some running in the pool a couple times. We brought fruits and veggies with us. We cooked most of our meals.

Overall, I don't have any regrets about food choices. (Who wouldn't eat samples of fudge on Mackinac Island?) emoticon I'm happy with the amount of exercise I did. I'm really glad I had this time to spend with my family. emoticon

    MICHIGAN!!!! I didn't realize you lived in GR! That's our old stomping grounds! Or did you tell me and I forgot? (Things like that are happening more often!) :-/

My hubby and I met in Grand Rapids in 1979 - at our Bible college (Grand Rapids School of the Bible and Music - now merged with Cornerstone). Then after we graduated (and married 2 weeks later), we returned to GR, where we had both of our kids (the hospital that was Blodgett). We moved to Fremont, MI in 1994. Then here to northern Wisconsin.

We (or should I say "I"?) love Mackinac fudge! Tho' I don't like crowds, so I enjoy going in the off season.

June 29 - exercise

I don't like to exercise. I put it off. Today I waited until it was almost too late. I wanted to just skip it for one day, but I didn't want to ruin my spark streak. I went for a walk and did my core strength training. I didn't walk as far as I have been, but I did walk. The thing is, when I get done exercising I feel better about myself. emoticon emoticon emoticon

    I'm the same about exercising... I put it off, too, but finding I have to if I want to continue losing weight...

    I am the same way,I try to do my walking before noon and that way I can't find any excuse to not.I think having an exercise buddy is helpful if you can find one. emoticonjob on following through on your fitness and you felt better for doing it.You Go Girl Go,I know emoticon emoticon emoticonDiana

    Me, too. I waited til 9 pm to walk the dogs (for the second time), but felt a lot better after I did it.

I just restarted sparking (recommitted to weight loss) after almost a year away from here. I wasn't ready then. I think I am now. Yes, you can have some treats, but you have to mind portion when you do. That is a tricky part of it because some sugar makes you crave more sugar. (Guess that was a comment to your first post.)

Glad you found this site and hope you'll stick around. I'm adding you as a sparkfriend and would be honored if you'd add me back and read my posts, as well. :)

Beginning

I first heard about Sparkpeople last week. I was ready to do something about my health and hope this is going to help. So far things are going pretty well. I want this to work, but I'm learning to cut myself a little slack.

Day 3 is always hardest for me. My enthusiasm is down and I usually give in to a food temptation that I have been eliminating from my diet. From reading other blogs and sparkpages, I realized that I can have those foods in moderation. I've known this, but that didn't change the fact that I thought I could follow the diet and exercise plans perfectly. I'm letting go of the perfectionism as well.

I want to thank everyone for putting themselves out there. By telling your stories, you're helping others work through their stories. I'm so proud of all of you for making steps toward a healthier you. May all your plans be blessed.
