Running and teaching, my 2 loves and challenges!

Friday, May 11, 2012

I am really worried about my 5K this weekend. Between my sinus infection and generally feeling run down, I haven't run since Sunday. I hope I can manage on Sunday. Worst case, I will walk/run it, but I really would love to run most of it with just a couple of walk breaks. Gah, I don't think I'll enter another race, because it is too much pressure! I have stopped feeling like I am running because I love it and have started to feel like I am running because I have to. I don't like that!

Anyways, check out some of my mega talented kids art!

I wish I could take credit for this, but I can't. I have a teacher come in once a week to teach my class while I do professional development, and she is really arty. My kids are really arty, too, and together they create some amazing things! They are currently working on some awesome animal face drawings in pastel, and I can't wait to get those on the wall! I have no idea how I ended up with the arty and sporty class, but I did, and I love it! Such a challenge, but teaching through art is fun.

And I will leave you with my favourite teaching quote from Maria Montessori

The greatest sign of a success for a teacher…is to be able to say, "The children are now working as if I did not exist."

Great quote! Love the art work too - the kids must have a lot of fun! All the best for the 5K - it would be a challenge to be enthusiastic when you haven't been completely well. That's only natural. I think anyone who shows up deserves a big pat on the back!

I am like you with the thought of races, I can't stand the pressure. I like to run and increase my miles for me, competing with myself to get a better time for a specific distance, or run further than I've run before. Throw a race in there and it just zaps it away from being about me to being about all the other people and I feel like I can't compete with others.

Nice art work by your students!

    I love that quote!

Funny, the reason I enter races is that it keeps me running. I know that I have a race coming up therefore I need to keep running so I don't suck wind during the race. My husband and I are trying to run one race a month, we have so much fun doing them. I was really nervous before my first race, so much that I almost didn't do it, I totally psyched myself out. I had the BEST time! Just think of it as a great experience and have fun!!

Idiots at the gym

Thursday, May 10, 2012

Tonight I had my first experience of real idiots at the gym. They were young guys, around 16, and there were 4-5 of them. They were messing around, using all the machines and equipment. Well, when they weren't standing in front of the mirror lifting up their tshirts and checking out their abs and biceps, that is. I used a couple of benches (sitting, standard and decline) after them and was having to wipe them down before and after using them because these fellas weren't wiping down ANYTHING. And they were sweaty and they smelled disgusting!

So I approached them. And I was really nice. I said "Hey, I think you guys are new around here. Just so you know, it is standard practice to wipe down your machines and benches after you use them. I've been having to wipe them down before I use them because you aren't wiping them." Then I walked away. And they all congregated and I could hear them saying stuff like "What did she want?" and "What did she say about us?" in a bit of a defensive and aggressive manner. Maybe the full sentences confused them? I don't know! Then I lost my sh#t a little and called out, mid leg lift, "Wipe your Sh#t down!" Yeah...Then I finished up and told a trainer, who escorted me to my car just in case the idiots had taken offense.

Ah well, the trainers think I'm funny.

Our gym has an excellent staff that reminds users to behave, but one thing that "kids" do that annoy me is grunt loudly and drop the big weights on the floor. I can even hear them from the cardio room! Gotta jockey for the alpha male spot by such displays, I guess.

BOB240 - We also have a problem with people putting their towel, drink bottle, mobile etc on a bench, and then work out NEXT TO the bench. Drives me bananas. I tell them it isn't a coat rack, then put their stuff on the floor if they ignore me. I'm not gonna wait around until they are finished not using the bench...

OMG, I had an experience with a stupid 16 yr old while I was running the other day. I had to give him a nice lesson in politeness, and then he got rude and smarted off!! I ended up hollering at him, and then a pillhead random woman jumped on me for hollering at a "child." It was not a pretty scene, not at all. I don't know why some people teach their kids that it's okay to be Buttwipes. Really.

yeah it's disgusting. My gym has paper rolls for people to use.

Signs everywhere help. Just point to them when someone offends.

Other signs I want in my gym:

1] Mobile phones that are accidently stood on are the fault of the phone owner.
2] Please do bicep curls in the toilets rather than in front of the mirror - it looks bad
3] Put your bloody weights back on the stand, don't leave them on the floor I'm not your bloody mother
4] Because you have plonked your butt on the bench does not mean you are doing bench. You have sat there for ten minutes and not done anything..

Strangely my gym will not put these signs up..

I feel like I'm slipping off the wagon...

Thursday, May 10, 2012

My fruit and veggie intake has been terrible. I NEED to get some more in the house. No excuses, I just need to go and buy some.

My exercise has been lacking. I am sick with a sinus infection, so that doesn't help. I have no desire to run when I feel like this, which sucks because I have my 5K on Sunday. I kinda feel up to some weights, so I'm gonna head to the gym soon.

I work too bloody hard. Seriously, I'm one of the first to arrive and the last to leave. I keep the same hours as the assistant principal! It is making me tired and cranky.

My boyfriend does next to nothing around the house. Our agreement is that while he is only working part time, he takes care of the housework. I think that is more than fair, since I am working 60 hours a week most weeks, and he works 15. Lately he has just stopped doing stuff and the house is a mess. I'm tired, and sick, I'm not doing it!

In short, I am sick, I am worn out and I am tired. I don't want to stop exercising, because I feel that is what keeps me on track. Gah. Just venting.

Hang in there, girl. I hope you feel better soon and more up to eating your 5+ a day and getting back to the exercise. Put a foot up your boyfriend's arse; tell him you need help!

    Hang in there!
To increase your fruit & veggie intake, you might try preparing some veggies, i.e. carrots/celery/cucumber, in the evening to take to work the next day. Grab an apple, orange &/or banana as well. One of my favorite snacks is an apple with some cheddar cheese.
All work and no play will make you sick.
Finally, we cannot change people and that goes for your boyfriend. He has to make his own changes. However, you can change how you think about the situation or about him.

It's like playing tetris

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

The weights area at the gym on a Tuesday night, that it. The men leave the benches everywhere, and when I try to move it to where it is supposed to be, I have to get people to shuffle (in between sets, of course!) so I can fit. I will fit, so I see no point in waiting around for benches where there are plenty, they are just stacked up against the wall.

I ran through my new weights program today, from start to finish with no breaks. Whew, am I gonna hurt tomorrow! The worst (best!) moves are the Arnie chair press and the walking lunges. My butt and back are already sore, tomorrow is gonna be interesting! I enjoyed the lower reps at a higher weight, and am glad I requested this program.

Additionally, 6 weeks ago I could only do 5 skull crushers at a time with a 5kg bar (no weight). Tonight I did 3 sets of 10 with a 10kg bar and weight (10kg total). Colour me proud :D
