Weight loss advice

I had a conversation today that really made me mad. Like, 10 hours late I am still annoyed, kinda mad.

Nana came over today, as she does on Fridays to do the cleaning (bit of extra money for her). And she tells me that she has been to the doctor (we have the same doctor) and he has given her weight loss advice.

Bear in mind this is the man who I gave diet advice to after he told me he was going on Jenny Craig, and he is a GP, not a nutritionist. I'd also like to take this moment to point out that, percentage wise, I have lost more than him in the same time frame, because when I go in he weighs himself and we compare progress.

Anyways, carrying on. He is on this great diet and Nana is going to do it too. It's low carb, she said. He eats nothing but fruit all day, and then at night he has a stir fry. Oh, and he eats whatever he wants on the weekend. Oh My Giddy Aunt, I was horrified that first of all a DOCTOR eats like this, and he is advising his patients to do the same!

I gave nana a bit of a crash course in nutrition. The following points were covered
- Of course you will lose weight eating that, it isn't enough food!
- It isn't low carb, fruit is full of carbs
- It is very high in (natural) sugar
- There isn't enough variety
- No dairy? She is 72, that is just asking for a broken bone!
- Carbs are not evil. In fact, I love carbs. I'd marry a loaf of hot from the over ciabatta bread if it were legal.

I told her that it was not good advice and that she should see a nutritionist. OR write down everything she eats for a week and I would go over it with her and help her workout her calories and where she can make improvements. But I don't know anything, because I am young, so losing weight is soooo easy and I can't possibly understand. Oh, and I'm not a doctor who gives terrible advice! Grrr

    UGH, that diet sounds ridiculous. And why would he call that low-carb? Ugh.

I'm not surprised, though. My dad's a doctor and he has been on some ridiculous diets and used to give me lots of unsolicited, bad diet advice.

    Everybody's an expert ya know!?! I'm glad I have a GP that I can really rely on. His office is part of a weight loss group and he actually has a dietician on staff.

My classroom looked like a bomb had hit it at the end of term. I took an entire week off to regroup, and have been spending most of this week at school, tidying up and getting my walls ready for this term.

More colour around my desk thanks to some cards with the days of the week and the months in English and Maori.

ANZAC Day is Wednesday. We are going to make poppies to put on the wall (I was going to use paper, but now I am thinking about using paint and doing hand print ones... Why, oh why, do I make my life so difficult!)


Our next topic is animals, so I have named the unit 'Where the wild things are'. Yes, I am just a big kid.

Whew, that was a lot of work. I have a hand cramp from using the staple gun too much!

I am taking tomorrow and the weekend off, ready to leap back into it on Monday!

In other news, as of 2 minutes ago I am the proud owner of an unwanted, never been used heart rate monitor. I shouldn't be this excited about this, but I am. Best part - $35!

Good bye 80's! Hello 70's! aka April goal met!

My April weight loss goal was to get out of the 80's. I didn't care if I only got to 79.9kg, I wanted to see a weight starting with a 7! Well this morning I weighed in at 79.7!!!!!!!! A full 2 weeks ahead of scheduale! I did a little dance on my scale. As ya do! Then I jumped on here to tell my wonderful sparkfriends my happy news!

I am so glad that I didn't let my March results get me down, because this month I have already lost double what I lost in March (600g vs 1.3kg). I am so glad I stuck with it and kept getting my butt to the gym and away from the junk!

Onwards and downwards!

I'm having a fat day today

Yesterday I ate too much crap. I know it, my body knows it. Apparently my scale knows it, even though it is probably showing a natural fluctation, it just happened at the wrong time.

TODAY SHALL BE BETTER! I usually don't get worked up over a little bad food, but yesterday it was just out of control and there was nothing BUT bad food. Argh. Except my lunch, which was a grilled chicken open sandwich. The McFlurry chaser is when it all went downhill.

The plan for today is to not eat the crap! I have already started off on the right foot, with toast for breakfast. Soon I am off to the gym to do my weights. Then the healthy eating shall continue!

It is a subway calulator, so you can get a clear picture of how many calories is actually in what you order. I was pleased to find out that my usual order is around 450 calories, which is right where it should be. My boyfriend was surprised to find out that his usual order (foot long on cheese bread with Italian BMT meats, cheese and ranch) was 1200 calories and over 100% of his daily recommended fat and sodium! That is more damage than a Big Mac combo! Sure there are more veggies, but a calorie is a calorie, and that is a lot of calories!

    It must have been in the air this week... I had a stressful day at work on Thursday and hit the McDonald's drive-thru on the way home from work. I usually don't eat fast food, but it really appealed to me and I wanted comfort food. And then I skipped my workout and just curled up in front of the tv and vegged all evening. I went for a great workout last night and I'm feeling much better now.

I am always amazed at how some foods seem "innocent" but have a lot more calories than you would think. I went to lunch with my boss the other day and had some chicken with a small side of tortellini. He was "godd" and had a salad. But my lunch was very satisfying and had about 500 calories less than his salad. It just goes to show that we need to check out those menus and educate ourselves.

Random Things

emoticon I did my usual 3.75K route today and managed two things that I am proud of. The first is making it up the hill AND not stopping at the top. I managed to go for a minute after the top of the hill, but I was out of breath so I stopped and walked. It didn't take me as long to recover as usual, so that's a bonus. I also shaved 3 minutes off my usual time by taking less frequent walking breaks. You will all also be pleased to know that the new sports bra and I are getting along nicely.

emoticon I saw a friend today and she kept going on about my weight loss. It was very nice to hear. This friend is very fit (she is shortlisted to represent NZ in the Olympics kind of fit) and I always felt like the fat friend. This is slowly changing, and it is nice!

emoticon I am having to rework my usual exercise routine to fit in more running, what with the upcoming 5k and everything. I can make it work with 2 days running, 2 boxing and 2 strength. I am hoping 2 days of running is going to be enough, since I will be doing other cardio too. We'll see!
