Rest day?

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Today is a rest day. As usual this morning I set 2 alarms, one at 6 and one at 7.30. The alarm went off at 6 and I woke up, considered working out, decided not to and went back to sleep. BUT now it is the afternoon and it is BEAUTIFUL outside. Seriously, we haven't had a day this nice around here for a while. So I'm going to lace up Pearl and Mavis and take them for an afternoon stroll. I'll move my rest day to Sunday probably, since I work that day and just keep powering through until my planned rest day on Thursday. I love that I actually want to exercise and be outside. This is very new for me, I'm strictly an inside girl. Much to the annoyance of my cousin in Canada, who is very annoyed that I live in a beautiful country and don't go outside and enjoy it!

I have heaps of school stuff to get done tonight after my walk. Mundane things like typing and printing name labels and importantly boring things like getting my folder up to date and ready to be handed in next week. I love teaching but I really don't love the paperwork that goes with it!

I'm on my own for dinner tonight since the boyfriend has band practice. I have no idea what to have, which usually leads to pizza. But I know I have a chicken kiev in the freezer so I will probably have that with some veggies and potato. Or I have quinoa.... I could walk to the supermarket and get some stock to cook that in... Oh now I have possibilities!

I'm headed outside myself. I can't decide between a bike ride, walking, or weeding (which really needs to be done).

Lately, I've been fixated on broccoli (with orange sauce) and cherries when I need something to eat and no one else is around. Thank goodness there is no pizza in the freezer; that is my "cheat".

Have a fun day!

I absolutely kick myself on those days when I wake up and know I should go to the gym but sleep instead. We have also had some amazing weather the last few days and I really hope it lasts! I have found that Sundays are the best rest days because I'm usually exhausted from a busy weekend or running around and late nights that it's just nice to sleep in and not think about working out. It sounds like you were leaning more towards the chicken kiev (amazing) and I hope that's the direction you took your dinner to! Enjoy your week!

I still get to be a teacher!

Monday, August 23, 2010

My teaching is going great! I was evaluated today, my lecturer watched me teach art. Her only negative comment was "who in their right mind teaches art when they are being evaluated?". The answer is ME! And I'm not in my right mind, I'm going to be a teacher and you have to be a little crazy for that! The lecturer then continued by saying that I have all the makings of a fabulous teacher and she is sure I will go far! WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO

In fitness related news, I went for a 3km walk this morning. I ran a little because I felt like it, but I'm sore now, so I'm glad tomorrow is a rest day! I know it isn't recommended to run 2 days in a row when you are new, so I won't be doing it too often. I was just pumped, got caught up in the moment! Pearl and Mavis are serving me well and I looked forward to my walk because I know I was going to be able to wear my shoes!

In eating news...yeah... It was my boyfriends birthday last dinner last night at his parents who can't cook healthy if they tried. I managed to snatch some cauliflower before it got covered in cheese sauce and cheese, so that was fine. I also had a potato and some of the roast pork. There was no gravy, which was a good thing because I can't say no and I drown my plate in it. Then there was the cake.... Chocolate mud cake

Yes, I Rick Rolled his cake. He appriciated it. We are weird, but OK with that.

I had 1/12 of the cake with a dollop of whipped cream. I didn't, however have the magnum ice creams that were on the table, I only had one piece and I didn't have the leftovers when I got home. I took some of the cake to school and gave it to my associate and the teacher aide and I had a piece with my lunch. The rest is going to school with the boyfriend tomorrow.

We have also been eating out quite a bit for a few reasons but I have been halving my portions or sharing with the boyfriend, as well as trying to make good choices! I'm getting there!

Congrats on your evaluation...Teachers that love what they do inspire a love of learning in their students..A truly honorable profession!

Amlyst - It is an internet thing... You would be watching a video on youtube or something and all of a sudden that Rick Astley song from the 80's, Never gonna give you up, will start playing. That is Rick Rolled! There are some examples on youtube

This video explains it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KT--

Running - W1 D1

Saturday, August 21, 2010

Today I went for a 4.3km walk and I added in my running intervals. The plan called for 1 minute running, 1 walking, lather, rinse and repeat 7 times. Here is the detailed interval thought process.

1- Wow, this feels great. Opps, I ran for 2 minutes, oh well, yay me.

2. Still not too bad, but a little harder to get going again

3. Hot hot hot. Must take off jumper

Insert trying to take off jumper while standing and not dropping my ipod, phone, inhaler and lip balm

Here I took a 3 minute walk break because I came to a big hill and there was no way I was running up that!

4. Yay for rain, this feels good!

5. Get though this and there are only 2 more to go!

6. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!

7. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, done!

I also ran a little bit once I got closer to home. I felt up to it so I did it. Didn't time it, but probably 30 seconds.

I found that I got tired and started looking at the stopwatch around the 45 second mark, so I'm hoping that in the next week I can break out of the 45 seconds=uncomfortable thing. I was going fairly slow, so I don't think I was burning myself out, just that I'm not a runner yet!

I also found that I was only 1 minute faster per km then I usually am, so I definatly wasn't running that fast!

Stay tuned for more adventures of running!

EDIT: I love my shoes! No seering leg pain like last week. A little ankle pain but I think it was because I didn't lace them correctly.

Sounds like you're off to a GREAT start! Good luck. When I first started running, I would start with running at 1-minute intervals, then 2, then 3, and so on, increasing every week. As I increased my running, I would decrease my walking intervals.

YEAH FOR YOU!

AND DON'T FORGET TO STRETCH! That was one of my offsets in the beginning. I was always getting injuries. The reasoning I came to find was that I wasn't stretching my calves good enough. This led to pain ALL OVER my lower leg areas.

Great start! One piece of advice I was given by a long time runner..Do not worry about speed or pace. Most new runners give up because they start out running too fast. Thought I would pass that on to you..The changes everytime you go out will amaze you! Stick with it...( Hills? yikes..I don't blame you..I don't have many around here and not sure I would know what to do if I found one ;-)
Good night!!

Lotsacats - Its behind the camera! I took a photo with my face in it, but my arms were in weird places and it looked really funny. Unfortunatly I got the best body shots with the camera in front of my face!

No Excuses! Day Seven

Friday, August 20, 2010

Day Seven of no excuses. I have walked 3 times this week (4 including today, which I will be going on after breakfast settles). I have watched what I have been eating. I have eaten more fruit, and only had takeaways once. And I have lost....

Wait for it......

Are ya ready....

.2 of a kilo.

FML. You have to be kidding me scale. I put in all that extra work and .2 of a kg is how you reward me?

Gah!

However, we shall press on.

No excuses shall continue! This week coming I'm going to work in 2 rest days, because one wasn't enough. Walking 5 times a week is plenty. I'm also going to keep further away from the sweets. Even if they fit in my calories they can't be helping.

Also this week I'm going to start C25k....or a version I found.

I'm not sure where I found this, so if anyone recognises it let me know so I can credit the website. I have searched far and wide and I still can't find where I got it from! But I def. didn't make it up!

I like this because C25K looks too confusing and this works better in my brain. It has the same kind of principle, so it should have the same effect. I also like how for the first week it is just 14 minutes. I can do anything for less then 15 minutes!

So the plan for next week is as follows:

Sunday: 3km walk with D1 W1

Monday: 4km walk

Tuesday: Rest

Wednesday: 4km walk with D2 W1

Thursday: Rest

Friday: 3km walk (will make it 4 if I'm not going into school, I'm not sure at this stage)

Saturday: 4km walk with D3 W1

Here we go, week 2 of no excuses! Who will join me this week!

    Good for you! Great plan
I am a couch to 5K graduate..6 months ago I could barely say the word "run" now I love it! I do not recognize where that chart comes from, but it is close to the training program the organization I run with uses..But its only in Canada, so I dont think its theirs ( runningroom.com).
Just as a share, I found free podcast for c25k on itunes ( I used "running into shape.com" workouts from Carli, 'cause I liked her music) if you have an ipod you just download each of the 9 weeks, put your headphones in , and do what she tells you..no watching your time or having to keep track of whether you run or walk..its like having a coach right in your ear...
Whatever works for you I wish you much luck ...I know you can do it!! and Pearl & Mavis will love too..
Have a great weekend!
