Saying goodbye to Pearl and Mavis

Sunday, October 02, 2011

Pearl and Mavis were good shoes.

They were my first real workout shoes. They were expensive and fit me well and I loved them with all my feet. But they have worn, as shoes tend to do. They no longer support my arches, no longer cuddle my tootsies and they have started to give me sore feet and aches in my legs.

Say hello to Olive and Myrtle

Olive and Myrtle are the new and improved workout shoes. They are comfy and supportive. I hope that we have many workouts in our future and I'm sure we'll be very happy together.

Fortunately, now that Pearl and Mavis have retired, they can now do all the fun retired projects around the house-- gardening, yardwork, etc. All of my older shoes retire that way...

Great shoes! If there are no holes in them anywhere, I donate mine to a local running store who provides shoes for people who can't afford to buy any at all, usually in Africa..

You are SO FUNNY. It never occurred to me to name my sneakers anything beyond "Saucony Triumph" and "Brooks Ghost 4", but now, of course, I feel the push to be more creative.

Also, I don't know if folks do this in NZ, but: in Minneapolis (and I think in the USA generally), every now and then you'll see a "shoe tree" out in the world -- that is, a tree where people have tossed their tied-together used/expired shoes so that the sneakers hang off the branches like enormous leaves. There's a shoe tree on the University of Minnesota campus -- students have been tossing their shoes onto it for decades, now, and it is something to behold -- hundreds and hundreds of pairs of shoes of every kind, including ballet slippers, high heels, roller skates...I've taken photos several times. ANYway, I've heard that what you can do is take a permanent marker and write a wish onto the shoes you're tossing (on the inside or outside or sole or whatever), and when you toss the shoes, the wish will come true. SO, maybe that's a good fate and purpose for Pearl and Mavis. :)

2 girls, a dog and a 5K walk

Friday, September 30, 2011

The title says it all.

These girls

and this dog

Went on a 5K walk. A looooooong hilly walk. That took an hour and a half. Did I mention hills? The dog had his first experience with water too. Our walk took us past a little beach so we let him off the lead to see what he would do. In he dove. Fearless!

According to spark I burned over 300 calories. Not bad for a nice walk with a friend! The weather has just packed in, but at least it held off for our walk!

I spunned my little heart out

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Yes, spunned. I am starting to speak like the children I teach.

Moving on.

I went hard tonight! I'm very proud of myself! Despite an annoying asthmatic cough and a very sore wrist (it popped super loud in the car yesterday) I had a great class and really upped my resistance. AND I didn't stop once! Not even just once for a second. That's a first for me! This class also went really fast since the instructor had a good, varied programme for us.

Today at school Miss Bubble sent 5 children to the principal and 3 children to morning tea and lunch time time out. I meant busines today and after they realised that I wasn't putting up with them anymore most of them stopped their bad behaviour, except one girl who I have had removed from my class for the rest of the week (which is one day, but still). Hopefully tomorrow will be better. As a student teacher I don't want anyone to think I can't handle the class I have, but honestly, they are tough. So the principal talked to me and told me that I SHOULD be sending more children to here, and they teachers do it all the time. That made me feel better, so I went for it today. Hopefully the children will remember that and be good tomorrow.

Off to plan...and shower and eat.

Good girl!! I would be so excited if I didn't stop once!! YOU ROCK!!!

You should have a chat with my sis - KACINTIA - she is a BT and I'm sure she would commiserate about being a student teacher - she may even have some tips!!

Good for you. You do have to let them know you mean business. Once they understand that then you can all enjoy the class. Great Job. Awesome on the spinning, I tried it once and couldn't walk right for 3 days so I have decided running is my thing. Blaze On!!!

    Your title is cute.

Your kids sound like my mother's students. I don't know how you guys put up with some of the nonsense. It takes special people to be teachers.

Skrew you, boxing lady!

Wednesday, September 28, 2011

Today at boxing I was paired up with someone I had never met before. No prob. She SUCKED as a pad holder and didn't even look when punching, but that is besides the point. She said to me...

"So, is this your first class?".

Skrew you boxing lady.

The reason I sucked today is because YOU were a crappy partner!! You didn't put any power behind the pads, and you stepped away the the last minute so I missed all the time.

The reason why I only do half as many sit ups and push ups as the others is because that is THE BEST I can do! I'm not a hardcore superwoman and that is OK!

Ticked off, party of one!

Yay boxing. Hope you don't have any little slips next time and accidentally hit her by mistake! That would be awful.

I have never taken a boxing class but it sounds like she sucks! I hate when people think they are better than you. Don't let it get to you. Just know that you are doing your best and that is all that matters. (And make sure you don't get paired with her again! haha)

I hope you TOLD her that she was stepping away! I ALSO hope you told her you are doing the best you can do, and that is all anyone can ask!

Sounds like she might be a "boxing snob!" :-(
