My therapists name is Diane. She sounds nice. I will see her on Monday. Stay tuned.

Now, just need to pass these damn assignments...

Oh, and I did some retail therapy. I got a diamond snowflake pendant that I have been drooling over for about a year

and a dress that I look really hot in. Seriously. My best friend called me hot. And we are very honest with each other.

Changing Doctors

Tuesday, September 13, 2011

I have been thinking about changing doctors for a little while now. I really feel like my doctor isn't listening to me and that is not a good way to feel about the person who is treating your health.

Today I confronted my doctor about not listening to me the last time I was in. He said he was sorry but then went and did the same thing today!

I have been feeling depressed lately. I asked for a recommendation of someone to talk to about it so I could try and work through these feelings. He tried to put me on anti-depressants. I don't want to go on them, and I explained my reasons to him (I don't want to medicate the problem away, because that is not a solution and not how I want to live my life) and he still kept pushing them on me! No means no! I don't in any way judge people who use medication to help with depression (my mum is on anti-depressants) but I don't think they are for me. I would rather face the issues and find the root of the problem than just medicate it away.

So I am going to change my doctor. How do you even do that? I have been with this doctor since I was 8 and, apart from after hours doctors, I don't know the doctors in my area. Argh.

Hey. You are a student, you pay student union fees and those fees pay for free medical care and counselling at student health. Might as well use it while you can!

Sorry you're having to change doctors. Can't say I blame you, that's for sure! You could ask friends who their doctor is and would they recommend this doctor to others.

    Hi there
You are absolutely right to change doctors if you feel your current doctor is not hearing you. I would suggest you look for a younger doctor - they tend to be more open to treatments like cognitive behavioural therapy and other "talking therapies" than some of the older doctors.
You are right too that anti-depressants are very helpful for a lot of people but if you don't take them then they won't do anything!
Best of luck,

Have a look in the phone book for Medical Centres around you. One way you can do it is to go to Wises Maps and put in your address - work or home. There is a section at the top call "Amenities" - just click on that and it will show the various medical centres around. They will come up as a little red cross on the map. Just click on them and they will tell you the name of the medical centre. You can ask people around what Doctors they use and what they think of them, too.

I recently changed my Dr, but within the same practice. 3 of the nurses and I were talking and I suggested that they bring my records up and have a look at the Dr's notes. I got them to go through it over the previous 3 visits. I didn't tell them WHAT they were looking for, (I had read my records earlier because something didn't gel right and I had a gut instinct) but suddenly one spotted it and commented that the Dr was rather mean and the comment totally uncalled for. They THEN suggested a Dr within the practice who actually LISTENS and is a real sweetie. They also said he is not about rushing people out the door as soon as they go in. I have since been to this Dr and he will be a keeper :-)

Good luck.

I realize we don't live in the same country, but here in the US, every possible type of physician, from general practitioner to specialist will push antidepressants given the opportunity - for EVERYthing. I have been offered SSRIs by everyone from a therapist to a DENTIST -- I kid you not. In the states, we medicate and medicate and medicate and medicate some more, because god forbid anyone should be anything but happy...god forbid anyone should feel a variety of emotions, or, even worse, become self-aware, and learn about themselves, their choices and behavior through introspection and psychological work. I've had to fight kicking and screaming to NOT be on an antidepressant -- I was worried for a while that no doctor would respect my wishes to not take Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Effexor... I hate how hard it is to get that choice taken seriously, and it's ONLY my choice -- I'm not commenting on or judging ANYone else's -- but man.

Sorry. Just empathizing, over here.

Today, I spun

Monday, September 12, 2011

Spun? Spinned? Whatever, I did it.

The class was rather...blah. No one had energy and it was contagious. I got through it, but it was a looooooong hour. But my workout for the day is done, which is 2 days in a row. Go me. I even (briefly) ventured over to the arm strength machines for a little 'play'. But the arm machines aren't all in the same place, which I think is silly, and I could only find one. I'll have to book a time with one of the trainers there (free, thanks YMCA!) and get a tour of the machines.

I have a busy day planned. I have a bit of assignmenting (blah), then a haircut (yay!) then the doctors (boo). I got a call late last night from the doctor I saw at the after hours doctor last week (A story I didn't blog about. Long story short, my lips were itching and stinging like crazy and I was having to ice them constantly). He said my tests came back and I have...Oral thrush (ewwwwwwwwwwwww) and a STAPH INFECTION (more ewwwwwwww). So I am off to my GP to get it sorted. While I am there I am going to have a quiet word about how uncomfortable he made me feel when I was there last, and how I am thinking seriously about changing doctors. He owns the practice so I can't go to a supervisor, and I think he needs to know.

So, thats my day :)

Good luck with the Dr's appointment. Maybe the Dr was having a bad day when you were there last? Oral Thrush is particularly common - especially if using some medications. I have had it myself. It is very easily treated, but I would suggest that you keep your cups/utensils separate or soak in a little very hot water and bleach for a while. Kudos to you for making that spinning class AND lasting the hour!

The Smelly Blogger is back

Monday, September 12, 2011

I'm sitting in my living room and I stink. How awesome is that?!?!?

I got my jiggly ass to the gym. Finally.

I had a bet with my boss. We were both going to workout today. If we didn't we had to sing "I'm a little teapot" at Thursdays staff meeting. There was no way in hell I was doing that so I trotted off to the gym and went to boxing. It was a good class. While I was there I signed up for the spinning class tomorrow morning. Gotta get back into it.

My eating has been good today!!!!!! See below

B - 1 piece of grainy toast with PB
S - 4 crackers with hummus
L - 4 cruskits with hummus and feta
S - 2 mini chocolate bars (tiny!!)
D - Lamb (I'll cut off the fat) with roast tatties, and corn - To be consumed

If I have room in my calories I'll have a scoop of sorbet for dessert.

See. Good, huh? I eat a lot of hummus while "dieting". It keeps me full and is pretty darn tasty!

I actually have a light(ish) workload for tomorrow so I am going to go to spinning and get a haircut. It is getting scraggly and needs a tidy up. With my lighter workload I actually have time! YAY!

Does your boss have to do "I'm a Little Tea Pot?"

I like hummus, too - especially the Tomato/Basic and Garlic mix on toast or a Wholemeal Salada, OR on grainy bread with a sausage in it - yuuuummmm

Today wasn't too bad

Saturday, September 10, 2011

Today wasn't bad. I had a group meeting at a library, but I set out early because I am having a few issues at home right now, and I just didn't want to be there.

I stopped at the coffee place for a coffee and muffin. The muffin isn't huge, probably 300-400 calories worth (using similar sized muffins on sparkpeople as a guide) and it keeps me surprisingly full! I totally forgot I got the coffee, so thats $4.50 down the drain, since it wasn't drinkable when I remembered I had it 5 hours later. Morning tea was a coffee that my friend got me. Lunch was sushi. Not too bad, although I am at 1000 calories already. Anyone else find it impossible to eat 1200cal? Its just not enough food! I need 1500cal or I swear I will starve to death.

We got quite a bit of work done at the library, so thats good. I have a lot of homework though!

I am still exhusted. I honestly have never felt so lazy in all my life, but I have no energy what so ever! I WILL be going to the doctor on Monday. I hope he listens to me this time. Last time I had a less than nice experience.

1200 calories is definitely not enough for an active women, unless you are less than 5 feet tall. 1500 would be the absolute minimum that anyone should eat. You have to fuel your workouts!

1200 calories is not enough (in my opinion) unless you're just sitting around all day doing nothing.

I hope your doctor listens to you this time! I hope nothing is seriously wrong. Please keep us posted!

Why are you doing 1200 calories? My Dietitian told me that in NZ they don't recommend going under 1400 calories UNLESS supervised by a Dietitian OR a Dr who has extra certification in Nutrition.

I would suggest that IF you really NEED to be at 1200 calories, then try to increase your protein a little more than you are already, and slightly decrease your carbs. Also, most commercial muffins are getting on more for 500 plus calories. They are VERY laden in oils. Copy/paste this link into your browser - it is for Muffin Break - most are like 500-600 calories!

Also, you are better to have 4-5 smallish meals and a snack, rather than 3 with a couple snacks. How long ago did you drop to 1200 calories? IF it was recent AND suddenly, then go back up and gradually work your way down. Give your body a chance to get used to the change. The other thing that comes to mind is that the lack of energy COULD be due to lack of adequate calories. IF your weight-ticker is accurate, then remember a wee bit bigger person requires more calories than a little person regardless of whether you are trying to lose weight or not.

Good luck,

I can't do 1200 calories either. My range only goes down to 1400 and I can only manage that occasionally. I usually need at least 1500 to 1600 to not feel hungry much of the day!
