Yesterday was a bad day - RANT

Friday, August 12, 2011

Well, the title says it all!

I have been rostered on for 4-5 shifts a week for the next 3 weeks. I CAN'T do that many hours! I am in my last semester of uni, for goodness sake. When I asked my boss if there was anything he could do about it he said no. He then told me that if I can't handle my hours I need to 'think about my priorities and my work/life balance". Ah, excuse me? I am on a part time contract and agreed to work 2-3 days per week. That can give me time for my priorities and my work/life balance. Working DOUBLE the shifts I signed on for? Not so much. I was floored, and livid. He basically told me to quit if I didn't like it! Seriously? Could he not have asked the other staff if they would pick up a few extra hours? He said IF I start having trouble keeping up with uni then he will reassess. Why wait until I am stressed and exhusted to make changes? I am saying now that I can't handle the hours, so I don't understand why he refuses to make changes! This manager has only been here 3 weeks and everyone already hates him. I think I am going to call HR on Sunday, because this is not right at all. The only saving grace about this company is that they are big, so I do have the option of contacting HR for advice and support. This has kept me up half the night! That and deciding which lectures to skip, since I can't work those hours and go to uni!

Then, I went to the doctor. I haven't told y'all this but I have been having trouble with my lips. Basically they were red, swollen, sore, itchy and...scaley. They have been for months but they are just getting worse. I saw my regular GP 2 weeks ago and he told me I lick my lips and gave me some zinc and castor oil cream to protect the lips. I DO NOT LICK MY LIPS. I use lip balm for that very reason, because when I was a kid I would lick my lips and they got chapped. My regular GP wouldn't listen and the cream just dried my lips out further and made things waaaaaaay worse. So I went to another doctor last night who told me that my GP should have listened to me! This doctor gave me steroid creams and within an HOUR my lips were feeling waaaaay better and looking better. I basically looked like Bobo the clown before because I had a big red outline around my lips from where it was sore and irritated. I am to use the strong cream for a week, the weaker cream for a week after that and then I should be fine! I am seriously thinking about changing doctors. It is so much nicer to have someone who listens to you and takes you seriously.

THEN! I got home from the doctor and my parents were drunk. They drink a lot, but last night they were definatly drunk. I had planned on knuckling down and finishing an assignment last night but I hate being around my parents when they are drunk so Russell took me out to dinner. I just couldn't cope with the responsibility of my drunk parents last night, because they generally end up fighting and then I have to take care of a now drunk and depressed (diagnosed) mother. I had enough on my plate.

Russell took me out for Thai. Nice, healthy choice, lots of veggies, no cream etc. Then dessert. At Denny's. Sometimes you just need chocolate and last night was one of those times. I own my choices.

If you made it this far then you get an award

Wow you have such a lot to cope with but I would definitely ditch the extra work hours. You have a contract, you keep your part of the bargain, your boss doesn't get to decide your priorities outside of your contract. And honey, if you get behind at varsity it is just so hard to catch up. And why would you put yourself through that stress, you are so right! uni is the most important thing, $ lost now will be recouped and more when you have qualified.
Let us know how this panned out for you, and best of luck!

You are definitely dealing with a lot. I hope you find a way to solve your work hours. It must be tough dealing with parents who do not know their limits. Don't let life get you down, these trials and tribulations only make you stronger.

Uni has to be the priority. Your boss is a jackwagon for not getting that.

I had what sounds like the exact problem with my lips a little over 2 years ago. GP doc said to use something like Nivea lip balm. I almost rolled my eyes at the suggestion. Sorry, but I'd tried everything and nothing was helping, and many things were making it worse. I ended up going to a dermatologist about it and I was prescribed...you guessed it...steroid cream, and like you, I had almost immediate relief. I had problems again several weeks ago. I was in misery and the derm didn't have any open slots for weeks. Luckily my best friend is the lead nurse in my GP's office and she was able to get a prescription called in for me to get that same cream. Whew!

I'm glad Russell took you out to eat last night. I couldn't deal with babysitting drunk adults! LOL

The smelly blogger strikes again

Back from another run.

Another 3.3K in 30 minutes

Day 3, Week 3 ticked off!

Admittedly I skipped right to week 3. My first time out I just did what I could manage and that happened to be roughly what week 3 describes so I went with it. Week 4 starts next run! Because my timetable is hectic and changes all the time I am chaging weeks every 3 runs (unless I don't feel ready, and then I will repeat a week). This is because sometimes I can fit 3 runs into 7 days and sometimes I can fit them in to 10 days. 5K MY way, right?

OK off to shower and then go to work. Ick, I really don't wanna go to work!

I am exhusted, but jazzed.

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

So ya know that assignment I have been harping on about for weeks? That hard one? The one I hated. I HANDED IT IN TODAY! I kissed it, said a few words and popped it into the drop box. 2 DAYS EARLY. I know! Look at me go!!

So I was jazzed, driving to the gym and suddenly I just slumped. I was exhusted and the thought of doing anything but sitting down made me sad. Assignments are mentally and physically draining! So I came home and decided to have a drink on the couch instead. Life is all about balance!

I'll get to bed early and try to get up early for a run tomorrow. That will equal 3 workouts this week, plus I will do something on Saturday! Sounds good to me.

Eating today was OK. Too much sushi! It is the only healthy option at uni, and I forgot to take lunch so it was my only option. Headed for the non-fried ones!

9am spinning class - I did it

Monday, August 08, 2011

Rolled out of bed 15 minutes before the spin class was due to start. I love living a 5 minute drive from my gym!!

Made it to the class and got spinning. I think I worked pretty hard, although I didn't exactly follow the instructor. That is the great thing about spinning; it is YOUR workout and if you are tired and need to slow down then that is fine!

So, workout done. Breakfast (english muffin with marmite) done. Assignment...Eh...

Blogging while smelly again

Monday, August 08, 2011

I blog while smelly because I can't wait until after I shower to brag about my successes.

3.3K in 30(ish) minutes.

Go me!

Run went as follows:

Warm up walk

2 min run, 2 min walk x5. I threw in a 3 minute run because I thought I could handle it, what with me being awesome and everything. I couldn't, lesson learned, back to 2 minutes. I'll try again next week.

Cool down walk

Apart from my shoelace coming untied 3 times everything went fine and it was fairly uneventful, and dare I say...relaxing? When the other thing I have to do is 2500 word assignment on National Standards a run is relaxing in comparison. I just wish I could bottle this feeling everytime I can't be bothered going for a run.

The best thing about the 5K my way is that I feel like I can tweak as needed. I think I was supposed do 3 min walk/2 min run x4, but I didn't need that much walking, and I added an extra interval to make up the time.

emoticon 5K in November, here I come!
