The last week in review

Friday, June 24, 2011

OK, 3rd blog post of the day. Yeah, I know. Deal.

Just discussing the week with my family. We complied a list of what has gone wrong. Here it is

- Flights cancelled, resulting in rebooking and stress
- My great uncle died
- Russell's cat died
- My mum had her stitches and staples out and is in a lot of pain
- My grandpa had a fall and cracked his kneecap. He can't drive and I become sole gopher since my dad is going away and my mum can't drive either.
- My grandad is sick with a cold but his heart isn't coping
- My parents car blew up and is going to cost $5000 to fix

I think thats it. Thats enough. I think we have had our share of bad luck for the whole year.

Oh my god. Dude that is crazy. The good news is next week has to be better. It can't be any worse. Once you get this behind you you've got to do something for yourself. Play golf go fishing whatever you like to do. And drink a few adult beverages to take the edge off you deserve it. I hope everybody who is sick and hurting gets better soon.

Since I have rebooked my holiday I can stop feeling sorry for myself and get back on track.

M - Work, then boxing
T - Spinning and pump
W- Muscle Sculpt and boxing
T - Working
F - Boxing
S- Raro (I hope)
S- Raro (again, I hope)

The holiday status is booked, but still on hold because of this stoopid ash cloud. It might go away or it might not. If the flights are cancelled again I will have to cancel the whole trip because there is no other time during the rebooking period that I can go and there is availability at the resort. The resort is being a bit unfair (I feel) and not offering refunds to people like me who are stuck in this situation. I understand they have a business to run, but it is not our fault that this is all happening. So IF we need to cancel we will only get a credit for our flights AND we will be out $800 for our accommodation. We have travel insurance, of course, but because of the delays in getting it (they took ages to get the medical form to us etc) we got the insurance after the ash cloud was a problem, so it was an exsisting issue and they probably won't pay. Joy.

Anyways, thats enough whining for today

Okay -- this topic makes me want to use "ash cloud" emoticon as my new official derogatory term. As in, "Hey, why don't you STOP at the red light, ash cloud!" emoticon or "What's that? You think I'm fat? How amusing, since I think you're a total ASH CLOUD!" emoticon

Just wait. Within five minutes, I'll have all of North America hooked on "ash cloud". emoticon
Cuz I am THAT influential. emoticon

Not going to Rarotonga

Thursday, June 23, 2011

So the ash cloud looming over NZ dropped to a level that most airlines won't fly under today. TODAY. The day I was supposed to be flying out for 4 days in paradise. So my flight is cancelled. I'm not going. I am trying very hard to rebook my flights and accommodation for the 15th of July, but my boss is being very vague about whether I can change my time off and told me to call him back in 30 minutes. Ummm hello, there are limited rooms left and limited seats on flights, I need to know yesterday.

I wouldn't have minded if the cloud stopped me from coming home. But stopping me from going is just uncalled for. What did I ever do to that ash cloud?

Bright side...bright side....

I have another 3 weeks to lose weight
I might have to cancel and potentially get all my money back, meaning I can comfort myself with pretty, pretty things
I can go to my end of semester drinks and movie

Nothing makes up for missing my holiday though

Three things including my refugee centre trip

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

Hiya sparkworld!

Thing 1: My motivation is on holiday already. Damn. Must go to the gym tomorrow! I have so many assignments to do, it is hard to drag myself away to the gym!

Thing 2: Person: "What are you doing this weekend/these holidays?" Me: "Oh I'm going to Raro on Friday" Person: "Luuuuuuuuccccccccckkkkky"

Not lucky. Lucky would be winning a trip to Raro. I am going on holiday because I worked hard to afford it and made the funds available. No luck is involved at all, and I hate it when people say that. It makes me feel bad for taking this holiday that I have earned. I already have huge guilt when I do things for myself, since I am a perfectionist and never really feel that I have earned a reward, and this just makes me feel bad. So there.

Thing 3: I went to the refugee centre today. A very interesting experience, to see where 750 people come every year to start their new lives in New Zealand. It is partially funded by my university, so I was able to visit with my semester group. A few facts for you:

- New Zealand has a refugee quota of 750 per year. This is the 5th highest amount per capita
- The USA takes over 700000. Canada has no set quota
- Only 20 countries in the world take refugees
- There are over 40 million refugees and deplaced people worldwide
- People can spend most of their lives in refugee camps and some will never be placed
- Once in New Zealand, the refugees spend 6 weeks at the refugee centre learning to speak English and to live in New Zealand. Some have never walked up stairs before, or used an escalator, or a pen, or a light switch. They are heavily supported to learn these things that we all take for granted.

I hope you learned something interesting!

Oh, I am a dork -- I totally meant East Africa, not West. Duh. I get that folks from similar countries/clans/tribes would congregate together, BUT: those poor Somalis could not pick a more DISSIMILAR climate from their own to gather in -- they moved from DESERT to FROZEN TUNDRA, and most of them did NOT adjust their wardrobes! It's sort of horrifying to see the gorgeous, zero-body-fat women riding the bus in January in their wee little sandals and sheer flowy robes, layered as best they can, yet still completely impotent against the sub-zero temperatures...some Minneapolis company should start making PolarTec burquas -- THAT would fill a need! :)

I think most of those US refugees are in Minnesota!
No, but seriously: we have the highest population of West Africans outside of West Africa (Somali, Ethiopian, Oromo, Eritrian, Kenyan). We also have, I think, the second-highest Hmong immigrant population, after California.

What nationalities are the refugees that NZ gets?

Thing 1: if you can't get to the gym, focus on eating healthy-healthy!

Thing 2: I hear ya on the "lucky" comment. We make most of our so-called luck, and chance, ie. luck, has virtually nothing to do with it. Great analogy, that lucky would be winning a trip!

Thing 3: Very interesting about NZ's refugee center. I really love how refugees are taught basic things, being taught English especially! Awesome!

I didn't take before pics this time. I always take before pics, and I never need them because I give up or fall off the wagon. So my most recent before photo is from 8 months ago! I guess it is still a before photo...way before!
