Back to sparking

Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Right, the boyfriend is back in wellington and I am back to my usually scheduled programming. I used him as an excuse to relax on my eating and exercising, and I need to be sure that when he moves up I keep my timetable and don't fall into bad habits. I'm sure it will be fine, but I need to be mindful of how my habits are changing to accomadate a new person in my life. I am going from being single for 6 months (and being ignored and uncared for for years before that) to living with a partner. I have been used to doing my own thing and not having to consider someone else, so it will be a change!

So today I am doing things right. I've eaten very little junk food, healthy meals, and I went to the gym and did my weights for just under an hour. A good start :) plus I did the food shopping and I made sure to get healthy dinners for the week. Tonight we are having tacos, but I grate zucchini into the mince so it is fully of veggies before the lettuce, tomato and cucumber go on at the table. I am using turkey mince since it is lower in saturated fat. Also on the menu this week is a stir fry, lamb steaks, and build your own burgers (I build my own pita, less calories/carbs.

Back on track, and hopefully the scale will be kinder to me this week

Oh, I like the idea of adding zucchinni to the mince! What a clever idea! Do you make your own seasoning for the mince as well? Does DBF like to cook also?? Should be fun!!

Awesome job! It will be quite the adjustment when you have someone else to think of all the time but I know you can do it!

Good girl. I had a week that started out great, but eating with friends got to me, and I have to do better today.

The boyfriend is a fan of after dinner walks, and he is thinking about joining the gym to do weights with me :) should be great

Great job recognising the need to do things differently early in your soon to be co-habitation :-) Hopefully your boyfriend will do a bit of exercise with you. I love having my husband around to spot me when doing weights at home or coming to fitness classes. Nothing better than having him as a boxing partner when I'm pissed off at him! ;-)

Where on earth has Bubble been? (pics)

I had an awesome 10 days with my boyfriend. I didn't even think about sparking, which is clear when I step on the scales. Up just under a kilo, which is not horrible considering all the eating out we did. I wanted to take him to my favourite places, and we met my friends at restaurants, so we ate out a lot. I also missed most of my usual exercise, but I am back to it this week!

We didn't take tonnes and tonnes of photos (too busy enjoying our time together) but we snapped a couple of some nice moments from the week

Like coffee at the Navy Museum

Then climbing North Head
City view on one side

Sea views on the other

(yes, we are in shorts and tshirts. At the end of April. In New Zealand. I don't know where winter is!)

On Sunday we went to Browns Bay to lay under a tree in the sun and watch the world go by

Oh, and we signed a tenancy agreement on our first house together (and the agreement specifies no firearms are allowed... We had a giggle because in NZ guns are so uncommon that we have never seen it specified before. It is due to the location of the house). It is a cute 2 bedroom cottage, and it is perfect for us. We move in in less than 3 weeks!

My back deck

My big backyard (I'm not mowing it, that's why I look happy!)

My fireplace in my lounge

My front porch (the only front shot I will post for safety reasons)

What gorgeous photos, of the beautiful scenery as well as of the beautiful people! Congrats on the house. It looks lovely.

And...it's the end of April here and it doesn't feel like it. We're much cooler than normal for this point in Spring. I'm not complaining because I don't like summer heat and humidity, and I'm sure it will be here soon enough.

SO proud to be a kiwi tonight!

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Marriage is legal for everyone in NZ! About time, and I hope the rest of the world starts following our lead. We are the 13th country to allow everyone to marry, no matter the sex of the people involved.

Kia kaha, NZ. I've never been more proud to be a kiwi!

Hooray!!!! That's wonderful! I wish my country would legalize it everywhere, at the federal level. It's only fair! Hopefully it'll happen this summer when our Supreme Court is supposed to make its ruling on a couple of key cases...

Yup, this made the news here in Canada. Way to go New Zealand! Well done!

Now if we could just get Australia and the US to pull their heads out of their collective bums on the matter.....

And that's how it should be!

Meanwhile, in my state [North Carolina], last May it was voted on and, embarrassingly, it was decided that our state constitution would be amended to deny this right, even though it was already illegal. This amendment impacts not only same sex couples, but heterosexual couples as well stating that “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State”- meaning that civil unions and potentially other types of domestic partnerships will no longer be legally recognized.

Unreal that the nutjobs running our state legislature allowed a civil rights issue to be voted on [and not even in a general election, but a primary election where turnout is always lower]. Also unreal that we basically have this law based on so many people's "religious" beliefs.

Whew, thanks for letting me vent!

I understand your excitement. When New York State passed same-sex marriage, I felt proud of my state legislature, my governor and my mayor, the last two of whom actively supported the legislation. The legislature took a long time to come around, so they were a happy surprise.
