Snow day and other things

Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Yesterday at school we had a snow day! Not real snow, of course. That would be silly. No, we had fake snow, made from compressed soapy liquid that was sprayed all over the bottom court. I don't have pictures, so you will just have to picture 200 children after a giant washing machine exploded. It was so, so much fun. There were TV cameras (we didn't make it on TV though) so the boss said we were to look like we were enjoying ourselves. I take my job very, very seriously, so of course I had heaps of fun! I had no choice! I was putting 'snow' in the kids hair, giving them sudsy high fives, and generally having a good time. I had the senior students putting suds all down my back and, since they were covered, trying to give me hugs so I would be covered too. The juniors kept rubbing 'snow' into my tummy, since they couldn't reach my hair to get me back! It was awesome, and the kids had a ball.

In other news, the kids all wrote letters to me today. They were instructed to write a letter about their year, what they learned, their favourite parts, etc. Only a few finished, but one girl wrote "I always hated maths and thought it was hard, but you made it understandable". Well I teared up right there in the computer suite! I need to add that to my CV! The others didn't want me to read theirs today (I think they want to give them to me on the last day) so I said I would print them out and they can turn them in later.

Today was prize giving. My babies got up and accepted their certificates for their achievements. I was so, so proud of them! The looks on their faces when they found out what their prize was for... Priceless. Another tearing up moment. I feel there will be a lot of those in my near future...

So I am having a busy eating out week
Thursday - Birthday dinner with my ex
Friday - Birthday dinner with my friends
Saturday - Birthday lunch with the grandparents AND mums birthday dinner (our birthdays are on consecutive days).

My birthday is a free day... anything I want to eat I am gonna eat. That birthday brownie is MINE. Other that that I am planning on sticking to my ranges and making sensible choices. Can't let one day derail the whole week!

Whew, you're all up to date!

I've been making certificates! Each child in my class is getting one Friday.

The certificates congratulate the kids for surviving the year with me (as a first year teacher they were my guinea pigs) and have a wordle. To create the wordle I got the kids to write their name on a piece of paper, then they had to give leave their paper on their desk while every other child in the class wrote nice things about them on their paper. I then input all the words from their paper into wordle.com, and ta-da! A personalised word cloud for each child. Just in case that makes no sense, and example is below.

Cute, no? I have laminated them so they last. I hope when they are having a bad day they can look at them and remember that they have lots of awesome qualities, and that they are good kids.

It is my birthday on Friday, so we are having a relaxed day. I am taking in a cake, we are going to do arts and crafts, and then watch movie. The good thing about my birthday being during the last week of school is that I can actually have a lax day with the kids and it is OK. It wouldn't fly in June!

Action World

Friday, December 07, 2012

Before the storm hit we managed to have a ball at Action World. I can only share the photos of me, and the children's faces have been covered for privacy reasons.

"Smile, Miss Bubble!"

Move over, kiddos! It's Miss Bubbles turn!

"Don't take a picture of me struggling to get out of the air bag!" - Sometimes they don't listen!

"Will you verse me, Miss Bubble?" I won!

Hmmm... The kids weren't the only ones who had fun!!

5km radius of my house

Thursday, December 06, 2012

There was a major storm yesterday. 3 people were killed, including the parent of children from my school. A tornado ripped through 2 suburbs next to my house. These are pictures of the damage

I drove through some of the damage today (some roads have reopened) and it was huge. These pictures don't do it justice. There are huge trees that have either been uprooted or that are snapped in half. Parts of the motorway sound wall are gone. Entire roofs have been lifted off. Hundreds of people are without power, many have no where to live. My gyms basketball courts were turned into an evacuation centre after boot camp last night.

Luckily, my suburb is fine, completely undamaged. Hard to believe that only a couple of km up the road there is damage like this!

I saw on the news last evening about the storms and tornado that hit your area and my thoughts immediately turned to you. Wow, I had no idea it was that close to you. So scary and very sad about the loss of life, as well as the damage and destruction to property. I am so glad you are fine, and I hope for others as quick a recovery as possible back to normal.

I'm so sad about the devastation that happened and that 3 people were killed. The loss of a parent for a child is so difficult. These things happen in a blink of an eye and we never know what will happen next.
I hope your area has a quick recovery of the basics that everyone needs.
