My new experiment

Thursday, October 25, 2012

For the last few days I have been trying something new. I have been focusing on lowering my carbs. Now, relax, I'm not going low carb or anything. I have just been focusing on eating towards the lower end of my range (and occasionally just below) and trying to eat towards the middle of my range for my protein and fat.

I have found that I am fairly full, but other than that I haven't noticed any other changes. I do think it is a sensible experiment, so I will continue it for a little while. It has made me cut out a lot of junk food, because it is so high in carbs! There are plenty of carbs in my lower range to keep eating fruit, my morning cereal, lunchtime sandwich thin, and yogurt; the sensible carbs! I did try my first ever protein bar today. I picked up a couple to keep in my desk for nights where I have to stay behind later than expected. I liked it, it just tasted like a chocolate bar. Not the healthiest snck, I know, but better than other options. Good for an occasional emergency snack.

So, thats the news...

I'm a big fan of the Kashi Go Lean protein bars. They come in chocolate pretzel, chocolate peanut, and chocolate caramel. See a pattern...??

Good experiment! Whatever healthy that works for you is best for you. It also gives you a chance to introduce and remove different foods. emoticon

I do that too, occassionally...i find that i am much more fuller and able to keep to my ranges better...and i have also bought protein bars for something to eat while i am out and about to tide me over until i can make a proper meal at home...not the best, i agree, but sometimes an apple and nuts just don't cut it when you are going to be out for a while...what I do sometimes (because the protein bar i bought is so high in protein and calories) is cut it in half for 130 cals, 15gms of protein, and hve it with an apple...works out really well. reminds me, i'm low on protein bars!

take care!

Strawberry season!

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

I love strawberry season. When I saw them for $3 a punnet (a steal!) with a limit of 4 per customer, I took it as a personal challenge. I was gonna buy 4 and I was gonna eat them! And I have. Well I have eaten 3, but I know what I am having for dessert tomorrow.... Each punnet is 2 servings of fruit, so this is clearly a good obsession to have.

Right, moving on from my ode to fruit....

My trip is on and confirmed. My travel agent called the tour people and sorted everything for me. I have my spot and my tickets and I am leaving in 11 weeks, 9 hours and 12 minutes. Not that I am counting. I have spent the past 3 days downloading every travel app on the planet. Not that I am excited. And I'm totally NOT excited about going to see the house from Mrs Doubtfire when I'm in San Francisco. Coz that would be geeky and odd...

Yep. Oh, and I went to boot camp. It was OK. Not sweaty enough for me. Going to a course tomorrow so I get a sleep in!

I am so excited for you! I want to travel so bad, but finances have never allowed it.

Sorry to hear bootcamp wasn't sweaty enough for you! Maybe it was good for your body to tone it down for a workout?? :)

I love strawberries too! Our strawberry season is usually early May through the end of June here, for locally grown strawberries. One year I went and picked my own, and then made jam with them. Very yummy!

I am SO glad you got everything sorted out. Bring your TA some fresh strawberries!!

Can you actually go and see the house where they filmed Mrs. Doubtfire?? I diodn't know that! That is cool!

You are going to have a blast!!

Freaking out

Sunday, October 21, 2012

Right. I had my contiki confirmed, so I paid for it, along with my flights, at my travel agent. BUT because I had requested the tour and not the TA we have problems. The (RUDE) contiki lady said that since I have decided to 'trust my TA' she is going to cancel my booking and let my TA rebook it. Great. Except it is a public holiday here, and the TA is closed. The booking is not being held for me anymore, and someone else could book it before my TA gets a chance to tomorrow. So I have paid over $4000 in tours and flights and I might not get to do the tour. The flights are non refundable, so I would still have to go, and I would just have to figure it out. It would mean seeing less places and not having any company until the last few days when my BFF joins me.

Argh. And there is absolutely NOTHING I can do but sit here and worry about whether or not I can get back on the tour.

Yes, that was rather rude of her. I wonder if she was to get some sort of bonus if you had booked the tour through her instead of your travel agent and that's why she was in a snit. Unfortunate. I'd complain to her boss. Even though it's a holiday, I'd still try to call your TA, and if there's voice mail, leave a message. Remember to breathe and say a little prayer.

I only left the house to see my friend Tracey for a coffee. It is a miserable day here, pouring rain and even a thunder and lightning storm a couple of hours ago! So I have spent most of the day inside. With nothing on TV. And just my parents for company. I got lonely, so I needed a distraction. Good news, my upcoming trip is planned! LOL

My best friend messaged me today and asked if I wanted her to meet me in LA. Ummmm... YES! I haven't seen her since she moved to London in April, so spending 5 days in LA with her would be awesome. It also means I won't be in a huge city all alone. And I'll have someone to go to Disneyland with. Sweet!

I have decided to collect a tshirt from each city I visit. I like souvenirs, but I want something that I can use. I wear tshirts all the time, so I thought that would be perfect. Yes, they take up more room than postcards and fridge magnets, but I would also be able to use and wear them.

I may talk about this trip non stop for the next 10 weeks... Apologies in advance!

So. Freakin. Excited

Friday, October 19, 2012

All I have done for the past 24 hours is research my trip. So excited. So scared. So much to do!

My to do list includes
- Get a new passport (have everything ready, just need to send it off)
- Buy a winter coat (Apparently it could be snowing in Seattle and the Grand Canyon)
- Buy a suitcase (mine is too big to go on the contiki bus)
- Decide exact dates to be in cities
- Book internal flights
- Book accommodation
- A million other things

I have already booked my tickets, my travel insurance (would NEVER travel without it!), and gotten a credit card to use over there.

A few people have asked what a Contiki is. Contiki is a tour company that catered to 18-35 year olds. They have tour bus and take you from place to place and then give you advice on what to do while in your new location. You can either stay with the group or venture off on your own and do your own thing. I plan on doing a mix of both.

The advice everyone is giving me is so valuable, I am so grateful for it! And thank you to everyone who is sharing in my excitement. I appreciate it. My mum is freaked out (she thinks I'll be mugged or something) so it helps to have people who are excited for me.

    I'm excited for you!

About the winter coat...maybe you could find something that has a zip out liner so that it can double as a warm coat and as a lighter coat, and quite possibly the liner could be worn alone as well. I'd also want one with a hood. Forget the umbrella....completely useless if it's windy and takes up valuable luggage space. I see LIVEDAILY has given you some awesome advice as well.

Instead of getting a winter coat, I might get several sweaters and sweatshirts that you can layer--you can wear them individually for warmer areas, and layer them for cold areas. It would take less room in your suitcase.

I can understand your mother freaking out, I would be VERY careful venturing out by yourself as you won't know what areas are okay what areas are not.

I am so VERY excited for you! You do need to exercise caution!

I am looking forward to your next blog! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Winter coat...get something that is "squishable", that you can roll up and squeeze into your bag. Research weather for the areas you're going to for the time of year you're going. When choosing your clothes, think of basics that mix and match: black pants, a black skirt, a black dress, a couple of shirts, a sweater, things that you can layer if it's going to be colder, your sneakers/ trainers a pair of regular shoes. If you're going to be going to a restaurant at all, you want something nice to wear (skirt/dress). Everything should be roll-able. Less wrinkles that way! Pack only the basics in terms of toiletries (one quart size bag of travel size items). You can always pick up more at drug stores once you're here. No snese carrying atuff halfway around the world! Hairdryer...most hotels have them in the rooms now. Leave yours at home!

You are going to have SUCH a great time!!

My son found that if he loaded as much money as possible onto a travel card for over there, then it worked out cheaper using that rather than keep loading it bit by bit. He said it cost $10 each time money was put on it. National/ANZ Bank do it but he doesn't know what other banks.

Tell your Mum she is to stop panicking - YOU WILL BE FINE :-) Having said that, I know how she feels 'cause I was a bit like that when my son went over - he was 30 at the time and his friend 39 - FULLY GROWN UP - LOL!

Enjoy your excitement :-)
