Food shopping and other things

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

Today I went food shopping. Good thing too, because we were running low on...everything!

As promised I stocked up on nibbly things for when I get nibbly in the evening. I got Special K bars, rice crackers, kiwifruit, bananas and manderins, as well as gum and sugarfree mints. I have 2 bowls full on my coffee table, one of fruit and one of the other nibblys. Yummy and convenient. I have to move to get anything bad and since I am fairly lazy I am more likely to go for what is right in front of me!

AND in the supermarket they had Maori Language Week signs everywhere, so I learned some new words. Two birds with one stone! Beef is Kau and chicken is Heihei. I didn't remember the word for lamb, which is a shame because that is what we are having for dinner! Lamb with potato and broccoli, delish!

Another problem I have is that when I get hungry I need food now. I go from zero to starving in 3.6 seconds and most of the food I have takes waaaay too long to cook so I end up making bad choices while I wait for my good choices to cook. So I purchased heat and eat meals. This is something I never, ever do but I found some with no cheese so I may as well give them a try. They are 350cal each, and the fat and sodium are reasonable to high. I don't plan on eating them everyday but they should help to get me fed if I'm in a pinch. I plan on adding veggies or a salad to them to bump the nutrition up a bit.

In other news, my walk got rained out :( I shoulda, woulda, coulda done some inside exercise, but I didn't. If it was a drizzle I would have gone anyway, but it was actually raining. I plan on doing my loooooong walk tomorrow instead if the rain stays away.

Wish me luck Sparkies! We will beat this!

3 things

1. Elmo was on Dr Oz today. I don't care if I'm 21; I love Elmo. You are never too old to have Elmo make you smile over soup!

2. I lost some weight emoticon

Hell yeah people, it is working!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so excited. I was naughty and stepped on the scales early but I'm glad I did because it has given me a boost that I needed.

I need to loose another 3.5kg (7lb) by the end of August to meet my goal so I think I should get there, or at least close! I am currently loosing 1.5kg a fortnight so fingers crossed!

3. Around my town it is Maori language week. This year I am making it my goal to use more Maori language when I am talking, especially since I am going to be a teacher and it is a requirement that I am familiar with the language and protocols.

Any Kiwis reading? Join in! I've found it fun to korero with my uni friends who have the same goal. My pronunciation and confidence using Maori language outside casual social situations is not good, so if yours isn't either then that is OK! Participating and making an effort is the aim of the game for me!

Anyone not from NZ reading and wondering what I'm talkin about? Have a google and these should be some great info there.

So there ya go. To recap

Weight goal: On track. Would like to loose another 3.5 kilos by the end of August

Personal goal: Use Te Reo Maori more

Elmo makes my heart happy

I am not a Kiwi, but I do know about Maori and I think its great that knowing the language is something that the teachers are expected to know. Good luck in your studies!

Sometimes I wish...

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

People would mind their own business.

I have told a couple of people that I am eating better. I don't use the word diet, I don't like it. Anyways...

2 people (out of the goodness of their sweet hearts) have told me not to be so silly and that I look fine. Then they ranted about girls and body image etc and made me feel bad. Then mad. I don't really like my body, sure. But I'm not going crazy here, I just want to get into a healthy weight range and feel better!

If I want to get healthier, I really don't think it is anyones business, except mine, my partners and anyone who I choose to have an indepth talk with. Mentioning in passing why I'm passing up the fried foods shouldn't be cause for a rant.

So, as a PSA for all men; The correct response when a woman says she is eating better and exercising is.....

"You look beautiful now, but good on you and good luck. Would you like a donut flavoured carrot?"

Good luck with the flavored donut carrot! hehe Agree that eating better is a choice and people need to be careful as to what they say/think around others.

Tomorrow is another day

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

The evening is my weak time. I spend most evenings either alone or at work.

On the nights I spend alone I snack out of boredom. I need to do something with my mouth and if I can't talk then I tend to put food in it. Tonight it was chocolate. It is sitting in a box in my cupboard because my partner is fundraising. It is too easy for me to access if I get bored and want to keep my mouth busy. I should buy some gum...

On the nights that I work I tend to come home hungry. I try to take a Special K bar with me to work so that I can have something as soon as I finish. If that doesn't do the trick then I usually want something easy and fast. Enter drive thru's or something else easy.

Tonight, as I said, I had chocolate. I went over my calories by 200, ruining my goal for the week on the second day.

But tomorrow is another day. I have a loooong walk planned for tomorrow which should not only work off a few of the extra calories but give me time to 'think about what I've done'. Not in a bad way, more in a 'lets figure this out' way. I'm not alone or working tomorrow night so the late night snacking shouldn't be a problem.

Lets hope for the best people. I want to see an 83 on the scale on Sunday, even if it is followed by a .9!

Hi guys, thanks for the suggestions.

I never keep junk food in the house because then I will want it, but my partner is fundraising for his youth band and that is why the chocolate is around. Hopefully it'll be sold and gone soon!

I am going shopping today so my list includes:
Gum
Sugarfree mints
More fresh fruit (I only buy in season due to price, so no melon for me for a few more months :( )
Special K bars for my sweet cravings
Carrots
Hummus
R>So hopefully the snacks will be better and my mouth will be busy with the gum!

Other people have made some great suggestions for you. I would like to add: don't keep the stuff in the house! I don't ever buy a package of cookies or a carton of ice cream or anything snacky that I know I have trouble with portion control because I know that if it is there, I will want to eat it. And I will eat it.

Its a little harder when you are living with someone else. My rule for my ex was: buy it for yourself, but hide it well. If I see it and am tempted, I'm tossing it out! (I never had to throw anything out, he kept his stashes well hidden!) emoticon

Hey BubbleJ1! As Mrs.Principal said, we have all been there. You should make a list of all of the healthy snacks and drinks you like so that you can be sure to keep those items handy. Also, be sure to drink plenty of water. Add flavor to it if you need to spruce it up a bit. Also, I keep chewing gum in my purse at all times so that when I have a craving for sweets or want to eat when I am truly not hungry it curbs those cravings. I also keep melons in the fridge and often eat watermelon at night to get that sweet taste but filling sensation. Just some ideas!! Take each day one at a time. :-)

    Amlyst,

Thanks for your suggestions! I have money this week (a rarity in a house with a student and a teacher!) so I'm going to stock up on healthy snacks I can grab instead of chocolate when I get nibbly as well and some gum and mints.

Eating during the day is so easy, but it gets to the evenings and all my willpower goes down with the sun!

    Hey BubbleJ1!
I am totally understanding where you're coming from. I am the perfect eater during the day while at work because I only bring healthy snacks and lunches. But the minute I walk through my door at home, look out! I try to eat something small every 3 hours or so at work. Maybe you could try to eat a healthy snack right before you leave from work that way you won't starving when you walk in the door.

I definitely agree with the gum. I try to have a bunch of sugar free flavors in my cupboard to "snack" on if my sweet tooth is overpowering my willpower.

We also try to keep several healthy frozen dinners (Lean Cuisine or SmartOnes) in the freezer for those nights we don't feel like cooking or want to order out.

Just a few suggestions! Today IS a NEW day!
