Exercise Blog - day 6 - Thursday 5/30/13

Hot today - and it will be hotter tomorrow. I felt "off" today and instead of going for a "power walk," I settled for a half-hour walk with my dog, who enjoyed it, I think! I went slower than usual, stopped for him to sniff and so forth, but at least I got out there and WALKED! I am going to go much earlier tomorrow, before it gets very hot. I am glad I went!

Beautiful day here, again. As part of my half-hour walk, I took a five-minute path through the woods near my neighborhood. I heard a lot of rustling, and then saw two graceful deer with their beautiful white tails run off into the woods. Seeing them relatively close up, you realize how big they really are - and how wild! I'm glad I'm not a hunter, personally. Good walk today; I had more energy, probably because I got more sleep last night (7 hours). Now it's time to go to work. Au revoir!

Another 30-minute (actually 33-minute) walk in the books! I went earlier and a little slower today - my legs are a little sore from my recent activity. I stretched after the walk and that helped. Lower energy - woke up way too early, couldn't get back to sleep, and by the time I got out for the walk (about 6:45) I was already feeling weary. I'm doing OK right now, but I think I'll have to take a short nap this afternoon. Another gorgeous day here - the rain really made everything look so lush and green! I love Maine in May.

The sun is finally out today! I had a very challenging half-hour walk today, down a very steep hill and up another very steep hill. En route I saw a young man running up and down one of these hills - very impressive - clearly in training for some distance sport. I felt like I was a part of the group of people that MOVES. It is making a difference already. I don't feel right if I don't get my walk in as early as possible. It is just part of my morning routine. I find, too, that I need to do this by myself. Much as I love my dog, I can't take him on my fitness walks because he slows me down. However, I DO take him on a slightly shorter walk later, and I am more patient because it's OK if he slows me down - my fitness walk is already "in the books." My next add-in challenge is strength training. I may do a couple of exercises today - I got a resistance band just for that purpose - but I'm going to ease into it. OK, yes, I'm going to do the resistance band bicep curls, 2 sets of 12 reps each. It's something anyway!

Today's half-hour walk in the rain was less enjoyable than yesterday's, but I'm still glad I did it! Reminded me of a long-ago hike in the woods with the Girl Scouts - but that was about ten miles of hiking in the rain. I was grateful today that once I got home I would be able to change out of all my wet things and be nice and warm and dry - no having to settle into a wet tent after a wet hike! Next time I walk in the rain I'm wearing a longer raincoat ... but my commitment to walking every day is strong. I definitely feel better after I walk.
