Our Hawaiian Vacation

Saturday, August 13, 2011

We spent two weeks in Hawaii this summer and I thought I would share some pictures! We stayed on the Big Island . . . one week on the Hilo side and one week on the Kona side. We had a great time!!

Nothing "touristy" about these guys!

Umauma Falls

We flew to Oahu one day and toured Pearl Harbor and downtown Honolulu

Sebastian was able to meet three survivors of Pearl Harbor

Downtown Honolulu

King Kamehameha Statue

While we were on the Kona side of the island, we participated in a 5K. This was definitely an experience for us. There was a marathon, half marathon, 10K and 5K going on that day. There were 305 people participating in the marathon, 566 in the half marathon, 199 in the 10K, and 369 in the 5K!! TONS of people there!

Sebastian ran most of his.

Me and Willie walked ALL of ours!! We didn't worry about our time, we just enjoyed the scenery and spending time together.

Twilight Challenge - Summer Traditions

Sunday, July 10, 2011

For week 2 of our photo challenge, we are supposed to post pictures of our summer traditions. Our favorite summer memories are made right in our own backyard!!

Summer is southwest Mississippi is HOT!! The main goal of summer is to stay cool . . . so as soon as the water warms up enough, we hit the pool!!

I like to lounge around in the backyard in the Adirondack chair that the hubby painted for me.

The hubby also paints signs to put around the yard to make us think we are somewhere other than hot, humid southwest Mississippi!!

And my FAVORITE tradition - grilling!! The hubby loves to grill and I love to let him! :-)

I hope everyone has a fun and safe summer!
Enjoy your summer traditions . . . emoticon emoticon

Twilight Challenge - My Town

Thursday, July 07, 2011

I have been out of town for the past couple of weeks so I am just now getting week one posted. I hope that is o.k.!!

Welcome to my town, Meadville, MS. Population 519. I have lived within a 10 mile radius of Meadville my whole life!! We are a small, close-knit town located in the Southwest corner of MS.

This is a picture of Main Street. Note our TWO redlights!

The Courthouse

The Toad House - A consignment shop where you can get local honey, homemade jelly, handmade items, etc.

Georgeanne's Deli and Gifts - Get a sandwich while you buy gifts from the bridal registry.

The Feed Meal - The ONLY place in town to get "real food". Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, corn, string beans, squash, yeast rolls, bread pudding . . . you get the idea! They are open Monday - Friday and Sunday 11:00 - 2:00 and just last week they started opening 5:30 - 8:30 on Thursday and Friday nights!! WooHoo!!!

We may be small, but we have TWO banks.

There is one school system for the county (Franklin County). The Jr. High and High school are located in Meadville.

We even have a hospital ~ which is where I worked for 17 years . . . until last year when I decided that I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom to our then 12 year old son.

O.K. . . so most of you have never heard of Meadville, MS; however, some of you may have heard of a town 30 miles West of here. . . Natchez, MS. Natchez is known for its Antebellum Homes. People come from all over the world to tour the homes during the Spring and Fall Pilgrimages.

Longwood - My favorite . . . it is octagonal

The Mighty Mississippi River during the flood earlier this year

And finally . . . MY HOUSE!! (photo taken on one of our rare snow days) We live next door to the Jr. High/High School so I can walk down to the track late in the evenings and get my exercise in!!

I hope you enjoyed a tour of MY TOWN.

Your town looks so lovely and peaceful. I like that the octagonal building, like something you can build from 3D jigsaw puzzle pieces, wish we have more interesting building structure like that instead of those fancy, modern, lifeless structures!

And your houss during your rare snow days, I love it! Looks like the romantic wintery house ;D

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

Monday, April 18, 2011

There were 10 people on our team, but only 4 of us actually showed up to walk/run!! This was my first official 5K and I decided to just walk this one. I am very slow so my goal was to complete it in 55 minutes. I did it in 54!!! I was very proud. My family (me, hubby, and son) are doing one this summer in Kona, Hawaii. I hope to run some of it.

This is me and my cousin Stacy. She ran the race in 31 minutes 31 seconds!! I was very proud of her!! She is trying to get me to RUN the Running With the King 5K on June 4th in Tupelo. I told her I would think about it.

I'm looking forward to my next 5K ~ whenever that may be!!

Challenges & Setbacks

Friday, April 15, 2011

This week we were supposed to think about things that are challenging to us and cause setbacks in our journey. My biggest challenges involve food!! (Who would have thought it? emoticon) I do very well with the exercise part of this but I struggle with healthy eating. My husband is a Captain on a towboat and he is gone 30 days and home 15. We have a 13 year old son and it is so much easier for me to grab something out of the freezer section of the grocery store and stick it in the oven or microwave instead of cooking a healthy meal for just the two of us. I really need to start incorporating healthy home cooked meals into our week. Maybe I could start with one or two meals a week and then work up to home cooked meals every day!! Several people on my Twilight SparkTeam are following the Clean Eating plan. I have looked into it, but haven't tried it.

Another challenge that I have is having snacks in the house. Sebastian is not a real big snacker but I think that I should have stuff in the pantry for him when he gets home from school to snack on. I usually end up eating this instead of him!! I need to stop stocking the pantry with these unhealthy snacks and just focus on fresh fruit and veggies!!

Wow!! All this sounds good on paper. Let's see if I can put any of it into practice!! emoticon

the plan is easy, following it is hard. but sometimes success can be found by just changing a few nights a week. after a month you may be in more practice with preparing health meals. it takes practice to creat the new habit. some kids will cooperate if they can be a part of making the meals and picking the snacks.
