Run, Clothes, & Food

Tuesday, November 06, 2012

Today was really great! I actually managed to encourage myself while ignoring my intimation of hills to run outside again today. I'm working on doing at least 10 minutes of exercise (no matter what it is) for the entire month of November. It's rather of a kickoff to working out more often. In the last few months of moving and total stress overload, I managed to pack on the weight I lost this last year. Yikes! That's about 7 pounds, grrr... So I'm kicking off the holiday training and working it out mentally and physically. So far I'm 6 days of working out for 6 days of the month - hooray! *happy dance*

Exercise today: 2 miles in 20:30 (totally hill workout!) Yoga Session after: 9 minutes + hopefully running again tonight with the hubby. Take that hills!

Food from Yesterday: (Today's not finished yet) You can see what everything is in my shared food tracker to the left.

Snack: Luna Bar

Snack for hubby and me:

Exercise Clothes: Such a difficult task being short when purchasing exercise clothes. I took this photo of my running outfit currently and another one of the pants that were made for giants! (Please ignore the terrible photos)

Running In the Cold

Monday, November 05, 2012

Brrr, where did these cold temperatures come from lately? Sadly, it's only started and I'm already complaining about it. emoticon Today I got out of the house and did some leaf blowing for about 1.5 hours (boy do my wrists hurt). Afterwards I managed to jump on the road and run 1.41 miles. It's not record breaking but I was hoping to go run with the husband tonight. The hills around our new house are really killing me... Okay, so maybe not killing but it's creating an issue with starting up again. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know!!!

Breakfast as of Late: (Also been delighting in homemade bagels)

This was trader joes pumpkin butter, unsweetened almond milk and oatmeal. Drink: Supergreens powder with unsweetened almond milk and water

Dinners Lately:

So much pumpkin and squash has been going into our meals, yum! Pumpkin is my favorite food of fall - what's yours?

I'm not a runner, so I don't know if my suggestion has merit, but when I am advancing in my workout and add intensity, I decrease the time and/or distance and gradually work up to the amount of time and/or distance I had before I added the intensity.

YUM!!! You're just going to have to ease into the hills or find someplace less hilly to run.

Running Gloves

Photo Shown not the women's but men's

Brr, it's cold out there. Okay, so maybe it's not as cold as where we used to live but the temperatures sure did drop last night. I'm using it as a sign though that I really need to get into action to purchase my fall/winter running clothes. I've been wanting to get some running gloves for some time now but haven't really taken the jump to pick one out. Today, I was so cold I went to RoadRunner online (I have a VIP membership) and found a pair. I have really small hands, usually I can fit into kids gloves, but unfortunately it's hard to find running gloves made for kids. I figured if the gloves are too big the hubby might get them in the long run, which he can add to his collection. But (shout out to Natalie), I purchased the Brooks Pulse Lite Running Gloves in black/gray. Unfortunately they didn't have XS but they did have S- hoping they fit. I chose these because the reviews suggested that they were lightweight but warm, thermal so you a bit cooler in beginning but they breath when your body temperature goes up, and because the forefinger has a tech grip and the thumb opens up so that one can use an ipod or cell phone. I'll let you all know what I think when I get them in about a week.

So yesterday I wasn't feeling good, I seem to be getting a lot of headaches here in this house - hope that doesn't mean anything bad. So, I took the day off from running. I did manage to sweat a lot (yuck!) while raking leaves around our house. I think I have a good portion of it done (about an acre) but we just have to find bags to put them in. I wanted to get those really large pumpkin leaf bags but they were sold out last night. These bags aren't my favorite but they do hold a lot of leaves so I'm hoping to only buy a few and get all the leaves in them. Crossing fingers. Then hopefully my husband will have decided on a lawn mower and we can just mulch from that for the rest of the season. Then I also took a .57mi walk with the furry baby down the road to sit in a little park on the lake we live on - something different for fresh air since it was in the lower 70's. Nice! emoticon

Other than that, I've just been running around the house getting little things done like laundry and etc. We also got up our blinds in the household which was a workout in its self. Also I made orange cauliflower soup - yum! So, I hope that pretty soon we will get into a normal swing of things now that we are settling more and more. Now I am trying to decide on the best running pants and running vest/jacket.

Suggestions? emoticon

I hope your headaches work themselves out and away. Those gloves sound very fancy and practical. Your crossed fingers will look downright FINE in those gloves ;)
SP has been advertising Moving Comfort (I think that's what it's called) workout clothes for different seasons. I wonder if they'd have anything you're looking for.
I'm psyched about soup season. Today I'm making the Mushroom Hot Pot on t he Post Punk Kitchen website. You know about that one, right?
Hope you're having a nice weeekend!

My favorite running tights are the basic ones by Under Armor. They have enough fabric to cover the butt :P No gap between your shirt and pants!
As for a vest, I found a nice comfy on that was reflective also. I had one of those Nathan reflective vests (that look funny) but it was annoying to wear!

Look like they will keep you warm on the run! Hope your headaches are not a sign of anything ... don't know what you're eating, but I had a lot of headaches when I was eating wheat and haven't had one since I stopped (in August).

I hope the running gloves work out well for you. Let me know. I'll need some for Las Vegas.
Headache...maybe allergies to new stuff growing??
No, I don't have any suggestions but would love to hear what others say.

Boy Those Hills

Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Wow! Going from the flat Midwestern states my entire life to the very mountainous/hilly terrain of VA really does tire a person out. I just finished my second run outside at our new house and am thrilled to finally have gotten myself out there. It's been rainy the last two days and I don't have a running raincoat just yet but as soon as I do, then nothing will stop me. So on to yesterday's report...

Bfst: bagel with vegan cream cheese & coffee
Snack: some candy apple candy corn
Lunch: Leftover Chef Meg's Squash and Tofu Stew with homemade bread
Dinner: Jpns rice, brussel sprouts drizzled with coconut balsamic vinegar, a few bites of roasted potato, 1/2 tofurky sausage and some swiss chard.
Snack: 1/4 newcastle beer with hubby & popcorn

Nothing really that exciting today because I had to organize the husband's home office and clean the living room from all the moving dirt and grime. I was really tired out though from raking leaves the day before for 2 hours. I think I got enough calorie burning today considering I was running around until around 9pm.

Emotionally I'm in high spirits right now. It's nice to be in a house that has plenty of windows and I can see the sun just about everyday. That's one nice thing about VA is the sun shines just about everyday. Additionally, the temperatures are higher than normal compared to Ohio so it's really an uplifting lifestyle for now.

View of our lake this last week.

emoticon Question: What running gloves do you prefer during the winter months? Suggestions?

It may be hilly but it looks beautiful!!
Hmmm...the only candy corn I like is the Brach's regular or Indian...the other flavors..yuck.
Sorry, I haven't used any running gloves but I'd like to know what you end up with because I'll need some for Vegas in December.

Whew, At Home

Friday, October 05, 2012

Finally, I'd like to announce we have arrived at our VA house and are getting settled in, kinda. This last week seriously flew past and I have been so busy with unpacking and cleaning the new house. It's a bit smaller than we had anticipated but we are making it work. It has lots of sunshine all day long and is quiet all night long. (minus the raccoons that seem to have misplaced their toys with our locked trash bin) It's all going to be a learning experience going from the city to the country again. Thankfully we are in a nice small house and we can get to know the area a bit better before we purchase a house next year (if my husband likes his new job). It's a transition house.

emoticon Food has been a difficult thing for the husband and me. We haven't had a minute free to go to the grocery store and really purchase a full week's worth of groceries. Plus the nearest grocery store is about 20-27 minutes away from our gated community so we are hoping this weekend we can get over to the stores and farmers market. Thankfully I did pack lots of healthier options to dine on when we got here that were dried. So, we haven't starved but we probably haven't eaten the right amount of calories. This week will be different as I'm planning our menu list now according to Sparkpeople recipes.

emoticon We haven't really been able to exercise really either but there has been plenty of lifting and stair climbing. I have gone up our new stairs a million times this week that I'm sure I'm wearing them down already. Additionally lifting a million boxes of books from one room to another hasn't been a piece of pie. We don't have a gym membership just yet but we are trying to decide if we can get away with it for the next few months before getting one or if we are just going to go ahead and get one. We haven't gotten one yet because we have been so busy and secondly because the only gym here doesn't prorate so we would be paying an entire year and only getting a few months out of it. We have been taking at least one walk a day though - hooray for the furry baby!

emoticon My spirits have been a bit low this week due to the house not being the quality we were expecting and of course walking into a less than clean house is not the best for a smile. But, I'm getting it sanitized and trying to get a funky musty smell out from wherever it is coming from and working from there. Now I'm feeling better that it's the weekend and the husband can finally assist me in unpacking and organizing. The weekend should boost both of our minds and spirits.

So for now I'm going to complete the recipe list and then hopefully welcome the husband home from a long week at work. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I'll see you on Monday!

Bummer about the house issues. I'm glad it can be temporary. Country living does have its advantages, though. What's the weather like there? Are there good places to run? Don't blame you for not wanting to join the gym, jeez, is it really that hard t prorate?! Have a successful and productive weekend!

    Glad you are moved in.
I think moving boxes and climbing the stairs is giving you a good workout.
That really sucks that the gym doesn't prorate...that's crazy!!
