American Homemaker - tried-to-be

Tuesday, January 03, 2012

For the last three days of our holiday vacation, my husband and I decided we were going to be hermits and hibernate. Yep, that meant no work, difficult chores and etc. Seeing that our normal life is hectic, we generally do not get this sort of relaxed treatment so we were totally besides ourselves. Then I got the urge to get into the kitchen and make something for dinner. Sadly, my inspiration was a new glass pyrex set of dishes with lids that we got for Christmas, per our request. I decided to make something with the large casserole dish since it looked so inviting and I couldn't remember the last time I made anything in a casserole type of dish.

Okay, so maybe it was only 10AM but I was totally into making the dish. I decided to make a homey (continuing with our hibernation theme) three vegan cheese pasta dish. I pre-cooked everything and then tossed it into the refrigerator. I was so thrilled to have a tin-foil covered dish in our kitchen waiting for dinner. I happily announced to my husband that he finally got an American housewife. Well, maybe one in training? I cook everyday but nothing that requires a casserole dish or re-heating it in the oven hours later. emoticon

Then my husband announced that the normal "American housewife" probably would make a casserole and set it in the fridge for later re-heating by the incompetent husband that can't cook while the wife was away. Ah, well, at least I tried... Thankfully it turned out great and the husband had 1.5 bowls full! That's a record I think, hooray!

As you can tell we didn't get any exercise in today (besides some fun situps on the exercise ball) but it was our day off so I'm not too disappointed.

Note: Sorry about the photo, it wasn't the best quality but my DSLR photos are too large to put on sp. So, this is a cell phone shot. I will have better photos on my personal blog at genkikitty.wordpress.com by 1/4/2012.

Happy New Years!!!

Monday, January 02, 2012

Happy New Years everyone! The husband and I have vowed to take this last weekend of the old and new years as a break from just about everything. Our last three days of relaxation before we hit the new year running. So, I haven't gotten online to make much for new years resolutions but I have come up with some in mind already. I will be writing them up hopefully tomorrow when I'm back into things. For now I will leave you all with these cartoons:

Tired but Happy

Monday, December 19, 2011

Wow! It's been so busy lately with work, exercise and prep work for Sunday. For Jesus' birth I do not mind though, I actually love being busy. That might sound strange to many people but once you get into the swing of a more active life you wish for very few moments of down time. I guess that is what happens when you eat healthy, exercise and treat yourself properly. emoticon

Today I was so thankful to get to the gym and work off some of those, ahem, um, cookies that I ate this weekend after they came out of the oven. It's our duty to test them right? Okay, so maybe that is bad but I was proud that I managed to eat just one of each kind - three cookies over two days. Not the healthiest but I'm sure that if I moderate it will be okay throughout the holiday weekend. Have you all been doing okay with the temptations?

My workout included 4 miles in 44 minutes. I'm still working slow but it's not really a wonder with all the cookies filling my legs. emoticon After the treadmill fun run, I bounced on the exercise ball and lifted 15 pound weights and did full situps with a 10 pound weight. Afterwards I engaged in some weight lifting with a cord machine and also 2 miles on the stationary bike in 10 minutes. Not the longest workout but I can really feel it in my legs so I'm thrilled!

How was your workout today? What did you all get into today? emoticon emoticon emoticon

Gosh SparkFriend I need a rest after reading what you did! LOL

Can't say I am tempted anymore by anything cooked/baked, etc. Even cookies. Try some raw cookie recipes next year. Then no guilt when you taste them.

You did swell. Gosh, only 3? I would have eaten all except 3 in the days I was eating cookies.

Sounds like you got a great workout. I'm sure you burned those cookies off. Yes, you do need to test them before you give them to anybody else...quality control is important :-)

Dinner - yum!

Thursday, December 01, 2011

Fresh veggies for dinner never tasted so good after 5 mile run and 2 mile walk in the cold and dark winter evening. It was fun to run last night in the dark, we got to see all the Christmas lights glistening and it really brought our holiday spirit up again. Thank the Good Lord for running in the cold!

Here's dinner:
Radish Greens Soup

Garlic, Ginger and Swiss Chard Side dish with freekeh

Dinner Japanese style- two nights ago (Egyptian Eggplant Dinner)

How is everyone doing? Have you found a way to catch the holiday spirit? emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hey girlie! You food looks delicious as always! I have not yet gotten caught up in holidays yet. I just had my last final today and another week of trying to find a lab to work in. Then maybe I can start unpacking the decorations!
