Thanks for Nothing USPS!

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Since last Friday I have been so overly excited to get my last birthday present that I was told would be here on Tuesday, December 14th. Since then I have been prepping my run for tonight so that I could use my Nike Plus Sports Kit. My husband paid for the box to get here today so I knew it would get here...

So, as I sat watching the mailman (okay, maybe it was a little stalking through the window in plain sight), I watched him step out of his little truck, place the mail in the mailbox, then I watched him drive off. Stunned, I looked around waiting for him to come back, I thought maybe he made a mistake, surely, and would come back around. Nope, nothing happened after five minutes. So, I took to getting all dressed up (it's 16 degrees) and went to the mailbox. Yep, there it was, a "We Missed You" slip.

So, how can the mailman "miss" me if I am sitting there waiting for him to come to my door? We live in a community, so there are about 12 boxes in total in one main key-entry only box. So, I didn't run out and jump him for my box right away. Seriously, I'm stunned! How could he not do his job that we paid extra for him to do?

Called up the main postal office and they didn't feel bad at all. They said that I could go out in the 16 degrees and chase him down. Sure, if I had a car and didn't have to work inside the house I would love to spend the entire day chasing down the mailman. But, that's not the case. They said they would talk to him again about him not delivering the mail (yea, it wasn't the first time they said). But, how is that going to help me? Apparently, I have to wait until tomorrow now and hope that he delivers it then.

grrrr... usps... all I wanted was the box so I could have a little extra fun tonight in the gym. Mr. Mailman, do you know how hard I work out and how this little bit excitement was going to make me happy? so sad.... and disappointed....

OMG!!!! I am SO MAD for you!! That is ridiculous! That sucks that they didn't even care. I usually have a better experience with USPS than other companies here but I guess I'm just lucky. UGH!!! I need to not think about this...

The USPS drives me crazy! around Christmas two years ago they came to drop off packages at my apartment. I was home, they never rang the bell. Instead of leaving a note, the guy went into my backyard (past a beware of dog sign) and left the packages on my back porch. With my puppy. Who used to eat everything that wasn't indestructible. Puppy ate 3 playstation video games, some books and various other things i'd ordered online (including a bunch of stuff from bath and body works). I had to take him to the vet. The usps refused to cover any of it, because the package wasn't insured. They wouldn't even pay for my vet bill. They guys excuse was the last person that lived there (three years before me) used to have him leave stuff in the back yard.

I feel your pain!

Free Health Videos!!!

So, yes, I'm a little behind the times when it comes to ipods. I have had a ipod shuffle for about a year now but did not really dive into the itunes store until this weekend. My husband, the lovely mate he is, got me a purple Ipod 16gb nano- 5g. So thrilled! The shuffle was nice, but it was not exactly the most user-friendly ipod. Basically, I used it for running, being that it was small enough to fit into a pocket and/or clip on to my running clothes. It is very handy if you like to exercise light. Falling short though are the controls, everything is placed on a little button fab on the headset. So, if you don't like the song you are listening to, you have to reach up to your neck area to use the controls on the headset. To make things worse, the controls would short out if you sweat! Being that the ipod shuffle was created for exercise people at heart, I would think that it would all be water-proof. Not the case.... To give Ipod credit, maybe I was one of the few with this same issue (only not according to the forum sites).

So, now I have an ipod nano to play around with when I workout. I absolutely love it! I have not had the chance to play around with it just yet since I have been sick since my birthday. Thanks to my husband for giving me a birthday virus as a present. emoticon Since I am feeling a little better today, I believe I will take it out for a gentle run. Hopefully, also, I hope to get the NIKE plus sports kit today in the mail. So, I will keep you posted.

The one thing that I have found handy though is that itunes has free podcasts! Yes, free! I knew there were free podcasts but did not know the extent of the contents. I found so many wonderful podcasts that I am dying to try out! I have found vegan podcasters (basically vegans talking about health and other topics within the category), diet and health podcasts, news and so much more! I have tried the talking podcasts and some video podcasts and absolutely love them! Some are around one minute and others go for around two hours in length! It all depends on what you are looking for at the moment. I love hearing about health news, so these free podcasts are perfect!

I also found that there are exercise podcasts. I downloaded a few yoga podcasts that showcase full exercise routines. Basically download to your ipod and watch as you exercise. Perfect! In addition, I found a few podcasts that have free workout music. The one I am trying out now is Motion Traxx, I think that is what it is called. Each podcast has different music (mostly digital) but describes the workout and the BPM. Download the BPM music that fits your needs and you have an hour or two worth of music for your next workout. I just think that is one of the neatest things right now! What better way to keep going to the gym if you can watch or listen to something new each time? And it's free!!!

If you are a podcast lover, what do you listen or watch? I would love your suggestions!

Free podcasts?!?! I didn't know this! Of course, I've never been in the itunes store because I refuse to give them my credit card information (because I never intend on buying anything). But maybe I should reconsider... And use a credit card that had fraud protection just in case...

30th Birthday = Accomplishments

Saturday, December 11, 2010

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Happy Birthday to me! Sounds a little conceited, I know forgive just this once. This year was a very special year for me since I was exited my twenties and entering the dreaded 30's. My "scary age" has always been 27, so I already went through my "oh my goodness, I'm old!!!" stage. Unfortunately, this year was my husbands' freak-out... which in turn made me feel a little sheepish as to why I wasn't more worried.

Thankfully, I was able to conjure up faith that I wasn't just turning older this year. (strange, but stick with me here...) My first goal before I turned 30 was to get into a healthy weight level for a "normal BMI". If you read my last post, yep, I did it early!

emoticon Weight at age 30: 117.2 Can't believe it!!! That's about three pounds into my healthy range - better than I expected.

Then of course my goal was to run at least a ten-mile run without passing out or anything that involved being rushed to the hospital.

emoticon Birthday Run: Half a Marathon!! Double Yay! I finally got past the ten-mile marker and actually did a half a marathon distance. It's a great accomplishment for me since I've never really had the knack for running. I just started one year and one month ago. So, that's amazing in my opinion. It was really hard work but in the end, I was thankful that I made it the entire way.

Next, be happy with food again and not stress as much about my binge issue.

emoticon Food: We are 100% vegan and so happy with the choice. We turned vegan two months short of a year. It has been hard at times (for instance visiting our family full of carnivores) but it has worked out to be better than ever. Plus, we are helping the earth and saving animal lives!

Finally, my hope for my 30's was to be happy with myself.

emoticon For someone that may never have been overweight, this is hard to understand. But, for most of you out there, you will understand that this is the hardest part of turning ones' life around to a healthy one. I still have problems with my own body image but I am working on it.

For those of you wondering, my husband bought me the 5th generation nano ipod for my present this year. Yay! It's exactly what I wanted - sorry apple, the new 6g is just too small. I wasn't happy with the shuffle that I got last year since the control on the earbuds usually dies when I sweat. Gross! In addition, I got the Tuneband armband and also the Nike Plus for running. I can't wait to try it all out. I will keep you all updated. emoticon

Happy Birthday!!! And way to go on getting all your goals!!!

And as for the "person who was never overweight". I have that issue with other people rather than myself. Most of the time if someone offers a treat, they don't follow it by "oh you can cheat this one time" to a person who they have always known as healthy and skinny. I want people to accept me as the new healthy and fit person I am and not a person on a diet or a person perpetually concerned about gaining weight. Know what I mean?

Gorgeous Snow

Tuesday, December 07, 2010

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Snow is falling once again adding to the wonderful winter play-land. It's just so gorgeous to watch from indoors as I work at home on the laptop. It's a true blessing to see (especially from indoors). Now, I hope I can manage to get out in it to exercise at the gym tonight.

On a lighter, happier note, I have been making best friends with my weight scale. I haven't really exercised that much lately, mainly because I can't seem to want to go outdoors in the cold. Thankfully though I jumped on the scale again this morning and noticed that I am one pound lighter again. I fluctuate a lot, so it's hard to tell a definite number on my online scale however I believe I have lost another pound.

So, I'm proud to say that I am now 118.8 pound. (At least today) Please remember though that I am only 4' 10" tall. So, this may sound like a low number but it really is on the high level of normal. But, thankfully, I am now in the normal weight level of my BMI. Yay! My goal was to get to my normal, healthy weight by my birthday which is on Friday. So, unless I go on an eating binge, I will reach my goal. Hurray!

Cheap Garmin's!!!

Monday, December 06, 2010

emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

emoticon Shocked! As I was Christmas shopping for my husband, okay so maybe for myself too, I found that Walmart has some Garmin's for under $100!!! I bought my husband a Garmin this last February and he loves it. He got the 405CX so I can only comment on that model but he doesn't like to run without it. We actually run together, and I am consistently asking him for updates. haha He's like my personal trainer - so handy! It really helps keep us motivated and is very handy when we are away from home and want to run in the outdoors. It has been mentioned by other people that the GPS isn't accurate enough but we have never had any complaints. A signal has always been found, it just might take up to 5 minutes. We haven't been out of the country and tried it but I will keep you posted after we go to Australia in a few months.

So, I found out that Walmat was selling an earlier version of my husband's and got really excited. They are selling the watching for around $100! That is amazing considering I paid around $400-500 in total for his just short of a year ago. Just thought if anyone was looking for Christmas ideas I would throw it out there to you all.

For me, I have asked for a Ipod nano 5th Generation for my birthday. I love my shuffle but I would love something with a screen. Additionally, I'm excited to try out the Nike Plus Sports Kit with it. Has anyone tried this? Suggestions for armbands? I have heard that sweat can actually ruin the nano when running... I heard that the Nike armband traps in moisture so I'm worried a little.

OMG! I need that Garmin! thanks for the tip!
Also, I have the nano (older one) with the Nike +. Definitely calibrate it before using it!!! I use the Nike arm band for the nano and have never had problems with it. I actually find it to be very secure which is important since the nano isn't cheap. And honestly, do you sweat that much on your shoulder that it will ruin the nano? I dunno, but mine still works fine and it have been over a year now of using that arm band! On another note, why do you need the nike+ if you have your gamin? Just curious!

I just bought an ipod nano 6th generation. (I didn't need the games and I wanted a smaller one for podcasts, etc.)

I like the phillips brand arm band the best because of easy access to ipod controls. Many cover up the front and I didn't want that.

GPS ....we love ours and use it hiking, kayaking, boating, a lot of stuff. The only place we found it not working was on vacation at Sequoia National Park this year. So much tree cover ? No satalites available w/ cliffs ? Only place out of 8 national park hikes it wouldn't hold signal. Love it !!

Glad you found one, always fun new toy. Use ours for geocaching too !
