Running in the snow?

Yesterday my husband and I were feeling a little bit over excited about running and we felt that it was time to get out of the house and run. There have been a few people that have ran past our house, so we felt that it might be warm enough to get out there too. Little did I think about watching to see if the people that ran past our house actually came back through on the way back...

We bundled up and got all cozy in our winter running clothes. The first 1/4 mile was good, then the wind started and the snow got a little more slippery on the sidewalks where we run. Crazy, yes we are! I have seen photos of those people that run marathan lengths in the freezing weather but now I want to introduce them to the wonderful world of Freudian! Hello, comfy couch calling you! Seriously though, it was really cold and I couldn't feel my toes by 1/2 mile point. Then my eyes started to water and my freeze started to become a nice skating rink.

So, we learned our lesson and to stay indoors for the winter. I'm sure we will have episodes of wanting to go out again however I'm trying to post so that I remember how cold it actually was trying to run outdoors.

Now I must cater to ear ache once again - hmm running in the snow, can it be fun?

    Craziness! They don't plow our street so it never even crossed my mind to go for a run! And the gym was closed all weekend. (Ugh). Snow shoveling was my workout! I tried to run before in the cold and I was just miserable. I wasn't dressed very well for it and I have better cold gear now but its still not enjoyable for me!

Finally Back

Wow! It has been such a long time since I have submitted to a rambling here for everyone to read. Last week was my husband and my birthday, it was a delightful time. Imagine four days off from work with the hubster! The perfect gift! We had such a lovely time together and I was enjoying every moment of it.

I am proud to announce that I made our birthday cakes (yes, two) this year ago. Instead of white flour cakes I chose to go another route and made orange sponge cake that was low-fat and low-calorie! It was the most amazing taste and the smell in the house made for a perfect setting in our house. I incorporated my recipe with a recipe from Japan. Basically I took one round homemade orange sponge cake and split it in half. Then I took a large circle cookie cutter and made two double layer birthday cakes from the cutouts. Inside the layers was a little light whipped cream and banana slices! Then on top were strawberries and oranges! It was so tasty!!!

Although I feel bad about not tracking food properly for the last four days, I am happy that the two of us got to make better choices without being too strict. For instance when we ate out (since we were traveling around a little), we ordered meals without the condiments and with a side of salad instead of unhealthy choices. You might be surprised how many calories just a small fry or small drink contains, and don't get me started on the condiments on a simple "healthy sandwich".

All in all, I'm thrilled of our accomplishments during the last four days. We got out to the gym to run four miles and we did it! My husband of course could manage more however I was thankful to hit the four mile marker and not be tired at all! I could have gone longer however our gym is small and people were waiting for the treadmill. That has to be one of the hardest parts about our little gym, too many people and not enough machines. At least it is free with our community membership fees that we pay.

Now I just have to increase my motivation to get to the gym and start losing weight again. I think I hit another plateau so I have to work through it again - another two or three months and I might be out of it. Here's hoping for it to not take that long again!

Truly Terrific Tuesday!!

Two more days and counting and I have lost the total ability to stay focused... My spirits are so high, similar to children just before winter break begins, I just can't seem to get work done. Since my husband and I have the same birthday, we tend to have a pleasant time just together! We take off work and spend the whole day together, which is the best present in the world. I simply can not wait!

Anyways... to keep on talking about my motivation for keeping to my plan: Today I am going to try a new hummus that is offered by Trader Joes. I am truly sorry if I keep mentioning Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Markets if you do not have one close-by, they are wonderful! We used to live in a part of Chicago that didn't have either, so it was hard to travel to one for normal groceries. Now it is just a simple 20 minute drive to get there - thank goodness! So, today I am thrilled to try out black olive hummus which is about 50 calories per 2 tbsp. Yum! I'm going to place it on a low-cal tortilla with lettuce and other veggies to make a splendid little wrap. To side it off I'm going to make a Romaine Lettuce Salad with New Bean Salad mix on it.

To make New Bean Salad Mix at home like me: (from Chatelaine Magazine Online)

19 oz Chickpeas
2 chopped firm tomatoes
1/3 cup black pitted olives
4 thinly sliced green onions
1/4 c. italian or other vinaigrette dressing (we have 80 calorie Trader Joe's Tuscan Italian Dressing - I was lazy and didn't want to make my own this week)

Mix it all together and eat. Stores for a few days but the tomatoes start to get a little soggy after that... (hehe Sorry, it's just about lunchtime so it's on my mind)

It's Monday and instead of my normal ramblings about not wanting to get into things since it was Monday, I am rejoicing in it. Lately I have noticed that in my diet stage I have become less positive - so I'm learning to work on it again. After all, it wasn't the food that kept me happy all the time, it was my outlook. Take it for what it is, but I know that a positive outlook will overcome anything in life. Stay true to what you are doing and it will turn positive!

This week:
Monday: Yoga & Jillian Michaels Fat Banish Video Workout
Tuesday: Run 4 miles on the treadmill (probably too cold outdoors)
Wednesday: Yoga & Jillian Michaels Fat Banish Video Workout
Thursday: Run 5 miles on the treadmill (probably too cold outdoors) Birthday Exercise Goal!
Friday: Yoga

Anyone seen this yoga mat? I really want it.. hehe Yep, I'm a H.K. Addict!

    That yoga mat is too cute! Great plan for the week! Oh, and as for keeping positive, I make sure that whatever I put on SP is positive (blogs, comments, etc.) and it has really helped me become more positive in normal every day life. Now its becoming almost natural! You are doing great!!! Have a happy Monday!

Dark Chocolate Stars are not my friend...

So, it's the weekend and my hubby is home all the time. We went grocery shopping this last weekend at one of my favorite shops, Trader Joe's. Weekly I look forward to shopping there and Whole Foods' Market however it seems like the stores are full of unhealthy seasonal items. Has anyone else noticed there are no healthy choices? The hubster purchased, of course one of my favorites, Dark Chocolate Covered Shortbread Cookies in the shapes of stars! I know, right, you are getting hungry just reading about them. They are delicious but the only problem is that they are full of calories - 4 small cookie stars = 140 calories! Wow! Amazing! I am surprised to learn how many calories these little gems are - I used to sit down and eat them while not paying attention. Oops! I know better now however the hubster leaves them out on the coffee table and I fall into an old habit. I nicked the problem of eating bad foods (which we were never really bad at eating after being vegetarian for about 15 years and then raw vegan for a long time) but watching the calories. Today I ate 8 though which added up to 280 calories! Yikes! Let's just say I met my calorie intake but I wasn't wishing for bad calories... I'm walking the line of shame tonight - tomorrow I will make sure to remember this walk tonight. Shame shame shame...

Healthier eating tomorrow - even snacking! MMM, thanks for the reminder of onigiri - mmm.. raw vegan ones might be eaten tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion! emoticon

    I'm so jealous! We don't have a trader joes nor whole foods near us. The closest is about 45 minutes away and that's just too far for groceries. We do have a small health food store but it just doesn't have everything you want and their produce is crazy expensive! For now, I'm ok with the produce outlet and regular grocery store but if I ever move, I'm going to make sure I have a decent store nearby!!!

    haha Thanks everyone... I'm working towards not indulging on foods I can't resist - it's good practice for the "jolly calorie bakery" (as I have coined it) that we will be staying in for Christmas. I told my husband that he had to keep eating them just like normal only not to allow to reach towards the box... It's like a science experience, I have to learn just like the mice.

TJs is a lot safer if you stay in the PRODUCE aisle...

Even their dried fruit and nuts are dangerous for me!

(and I don't even have a TJs within a 180 mile radius! LOL)
