Which Heart Rate Monitor? Help!

Friday, September 28, 2012

I have been thinking more and more lately about getting a hear rate monitor to really see how many calories I am burning during my workouts? The numbers on Spark's fitness minutes seem to be a little high to me. Maybe those numbers are pretty good but I would really like to see what the actual number is.

I figured that posting a blog on Spark is a good way to go about seeing what has worked for people. To see what someone might recommend.

I was looking at them on Amazon and I have NO idea what I am looking at! I want something that is less than $100. I want something that counts how many calories I burn. That is pretty much the only things I am looking at.

Can someone help me out with a recommendation? Maybe point me in a direction?

good evening Sparkville

I have been thinking about the same and I have read about the Polar ones too. but I think at this point, I dont want to make such an investment on a HRM. Have been looking at ebay and there are some pretty reasonable ones. You could try looking there.
Good Luck

I haven't bought a HRM yet and a lot of people on Spark stand behind them 100%. I agree that Spark's estimates for calories burned are WAY too high. I'd be curious to know what I am actually burning, but don't want to drop the $$ on a HRM. So, I've devised my own method:

One week I tracked my exercise and looked at the number Spark told me I was burning. I estimate that Spark is off by at least 500 calories a week, so I subtract 500 from their total and that's the number I plug in as my calories to burn. This means if I get my normal routine in for the week that I'll go over my minutes, but so far the calorie ranges it's given me for food are working for me.

I know, I'm kind of cheating and it's not the most correct way to go about it, but I've decided that if it doesn't work anymore, that's when I'll make the investment. Good luck!

I had to do a little research before buying one myself. I highly recommend the Polar FT7, which is the one that I got. Prices will range from the $70s to over $100, but this site offered the best deal and they ship it right away. Very pleased with my purchase! Check out the link below:

Monday, September 24, 2012

I have finished 12 weeks of working out & diet! It was nice to have a somewhat "normal" week after 2 weeks of ear infections and strained back. Felt good to have a full range of motion again!

As far as Tap Out XT goes, I am really happy that I made the choice to do that program. It was a good move for me following Insanity. It has me already thinking about my next program but that will have to wait since I still have 67 days fo Tap Out left!

SUMMARY

(7/1-7/7) Week 1 - 2,246.0 cal/day...28.6 fat/day...334.0 carb/day...174.7 pro/day...260 fitness minutes & burned 3,416 calories.

(8/26 - 9/1) Week 9 - 1992.0 cal/day... 35.7 fat/day... 264.9 carb/day... 160.6 pro/day... 465 fitness minutes & 5,947 burned calories

(9/2 - 9/8) Week 10 - 2,016.5 cal/day...35.5 fat/day...266.5 carb/day...162.8 pro/day...335 fitness minutes & burned 3,286 calories

(9/9 - 9/15) Week 11 - 1,974.9 cal/day...35.7 fat/day...252.4 carb/day...162.1 pro/day...440 fitness minutes & burned 4,898 calories

Here are my week 12 numbers...

Spark says I can have between 2,010-2,360 calories/day.

September 16 - 1,967
September 17 - 1,902
September 18 - 1,987
September 19 - 1,952
September 20 - 1,972
September 21 - 1,967
September 22 - 2,029

I averaged 1,968.0. Aiming for around 2,000. Justbelow my daily minimum range. I really should be right around 2,000 with as much fitness activity I am getting. Will work on that this upcoming week.

As for fat, Spark says I can have between 45-92. My week in fat...

September 16 - 36
September 17 - 35
September 18 - 39
September 19 - 34
September 20 - 34
September 21 - 37
September 22 - 38

I averaged 36.1 I was aiming for mid 30's so I was right on my number. Going to try and aim for closer to my Spark minimum for week 13.

As far as Carbs, Spark says I can have 226-384. My week in carbs....

September 16 - 251
September 17 - 231
September 18 - 247
September 19 - 244
September 20 - 248
September 21 - 243
September 22 - 218

I averaged 240.3 I was aiming for being as close to my Spark minimum(226) as possible. I believe this is the best week I have had so far and will continue to try and get as close to that number as possible.

As for protein, Spark says I should have between 60-206. My week in protein...

September 16 - 169
September 17 - 172
September 18 - 172
September 19 - 171
September 20 - 173
September 21 - 173
September 22 - 148

I averaged 168.3. Wanted to average around 170. I just missed, mostly due to a low number Saturday. For week 13, my goal will be more of the same!

*565 fitness minutes for the week*

*6,532 calories burned*

Being back up over 500 minutes and burning over 6,000 calories is right where I want to be. I have a feeling that week 13 may be my most active yet! Stay tuned!

I WILL NOT STOP! I WILL KEEP GOING!

Good Day Sparkville

My Odd-yssey, Tap Out XT & Nutrition Week 11 By The Numbers...

Monday, September 17, 2012

I have finished 10 weeks ofworking out & diet! It has been a bit of a difficult week coming off of being sick. I did eat pretty normal last Sunday but didn't work out because of illness so my fitness minutes and calories burnt are still a little down from where I would like them to be.

I am weighing in today (9/17) and am a little nervous with the week of being sick and limiting my workouts. Plus I didn't track for a few days last week and I don't think I did bad, but it was a lot of icees and low fat frozen yogurt because of the throat. We shall see!

(7/1-7/7) Week 1 - 2,246.0 cal/day...28.6 fat/day...334.0 carb/day...174.7 pro/day...260 fitness minutes & burned 3,416 calories.

(7/8-7/14) Week 2 - 2,260.7 cal/day...34.0 fat/day...321.4 carb/day...174.4 pro/day...370 fitness minutes & burned 4,594 calories.

(7/22-7/28) Week 4 - 2,229.7 cal/day...32.6 fat/day...315.9 carb/day...174.7 pro/day...485 fitness minutes & burned 5,706 calories

(7/29-8/4) Week 5 - 2,106.7 cal/day...30.0 fat/day...287.7 carb/day...179.7 pro/day...545 fitness minutes & burned 6,496 calories

(8/5-8/11) Week 6 - 2,121.0 cal/day...36.7 fat/day...281.7 carb/day...176.9 pro/day...555 fitness minutes & 6,187 calories

(8/12-8/18) Week 7 - 1952.3 cal/day...36.7 fat/day...249.4 carb/day...165.7 pro/day...515 fitness minutes & burned 6,022 calories

I'm curious...why do you follow the Spark recommendations, but you don't follow the fat intake recommendation? I just wonder why and if you feel it's helping with your weight loss. (Yes, I'm nosey!)

Light At The End Of The Sick Tunnel!

Sunday, September 09, 2012

This double ear infection has pretty well kicked my butt! I used to have ear infections all the time as a kid but have only had 2 as an adult so I was kind of surprised when the doctor said that is what it was.

I have now finished 2 full days of antibiotics and I have improved since I first started yesterday morning! I am not 100% but ear infections can be kind of pesky and I have to take my medicine for 10 days! The biggest problem has been the sore throat that has accompanied the ear infection and that has also gotten better but is still hanging annoyingly hanging around.

The plan is to be better for tomorrow (Monday) and get back into this program100%! I really have done nothing exercise wise the last 4 days hoping that it would help me heel up back to normal quicker and not have any setbacks. I honestly can't wait to get this thing bach on track! I am looking forward to eating real food! To many icees lol!

The good news is, besides icees, I really didn't have much in the way of bad food. I did have some low fat frozen yogurt but nothing crazy. A few times when my throat felt better from ibuprofen, I really thought about grabbing something bad and tried to justify it in my mind as i'm taking a few days off from everything, so why not. Jeez, that was old Brad but new Brad won that battle and I didn't let it happen and I am so glad I didn't!

I haven't tracked food the last few days but I am ready to get back on that horse! I have never looked forward to having a low calorie, low fat, low carb diet more than I am right now!Basically, I am just plan READY!

Good Evening Sparkville

Great job new Brad!!! I also feel that temptation to grab something quick and easy (boxed mac n cheese or fast food) when I'm feeling laid up. But I manage to resist by reminding myself that only healthy food will help me mend - everything else just weighs me down! So glad you're SO ready.
