Seriously, What Was I Thinking?!?

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

It has been 109 days of eating healthy for me. Sure doesn't seem that long and it all seems to be the norm now. I rarely even think about eating something that would throw me off track. It has been a total lifestyle change for me. No fast food. No soda. No crap! I am so happy with all of that.

With that being said, I was profoundly saddened the other day when I took the kids to McDonald's. Yes, every once in awhile, I do take them out to eat and they wanted McD's. I tried to off some other things but nope, they wanted it so I got it for them. Needless to say, I had lemonade and that's it. No food, no problems.

My son got Chicken McNuggets, one of my favorites! I remember the days when I used to stop at McD's and buy a 20 piece nugget, large fry, and large coke to take to work and eat for dinner. I would also use 3 packs of hot mustard and mix it with 3 packs of honey mustard to dip it all in. So, lets look at those nutrition facts...

-20 nuggets are 940 calories, 60g fat, 1,800mg sodium, 60g carbs
-3 packs hot mustard are 180 calories, 6g fat, 750mg sodium, 24 carbs
-3 pack honey mustard are 180 calories, 4g fat, 360mg sodium, 18 carbs
-1 Large french fry is 500 calories, 25g fat, 350mg sodium, 63 carbs
-1 Large Coke is 310 calories, 20mg of sodium, 86 carbs

So lets total all of that up...

2,110 calories, 95g fat, 3,346mg sodium, and 251 carbs.

I look at those numbers right now and I am seriously tearing up. Literally, I am sitting here looking at those numbers and it makes me sick. smh

I can't believe that is what I was eating and thought it was ok. Well, I don't think I thought it was ok but maybe I did. It's not like this was a one time thing! I did this many times over the years. I did this multiple times in the last year before I started back on Spark and eating good and working out.

No wonder I have 167lbs. to lose. No wonder obesity is such a problem in this country.

All those number make me profoundly sad. I can't even believe that was me.

That was me, but not any more! If I ever need some more motivation to eat good, I need to look at these numbers and remember the way I feel right now. Just sad.

So glad I have gotten on the right track. So glad I am eating great! So glad I am working out! So glad I have the support of all of my great Spark friends!

I feel that way too when I think back to my past lifestyle - sad, embarrassed, guilty, disgusted. But then I remember that I'm actually doing something about it now. I make a series of good decisions throughout the day, go to sleep, and repeat. You have made so much progress, have established and maintained healthy habits, and are being an awesome example for your kids! funny the way it is :)

EMMAEKAY 8/28/2012 11:28AM

Brad, let me tell you something - I was the exact same way! Exactly the same! I'd get a 10 pc nugget and a double cheeseburger, large fries and a large dr. pepper - for dinner. That would be after eating snacks (crap) at work all day and having a bite when I came home. Then, after stuffing myself with McD's, I'd end up with a big glass of whole milk and a couple little debbies before bed. I was taking in 3000-4000 calories most days and not exercising AT ALL.

No wonder I ended up over 300 lbs. No wonder I found myself needing to lose 130 lbs in order to live a full life. No wonder!

But we're here now, we're making good choices now, and best of all, we're teaching our friends and family how to make better choices through example. Your kids are going to grow up with the idea that McD's is a TREAT - not a staple! They're going to know how to prepare and enjoy healthy food, and best of all, they're going to know how important it is to exercise every single day.

Maybe we didn't make smart choices in the past, but we are ROCKING it now!!

Holy smokes! I wasn't really surprised by the nuggets, fries, or coke but I had no idea the calories and fat in the dipping mustard! Wow! I'm more of a burger girl myself and would always go for the Big Mac or Whopper with Cheese. These days it's more likely to be the whopper junior no cheese no mayo!

I am so guilty of just grabbing whatever and cramming it in my mouth without even thinking about how bad it is. I started seriously tracking in the past few weeks, all after I ate and was floored at just how badly I eat. That's why I'm currently getting my meals for the week ready and planned out. I do not have the ability to get something from a restaurant that isn't horrible for me, so no eating out.

You are right, it is so sad that people put that junk in their bodies, most of them are clueless as to just how bad it is for them. My opinion is that if you have to clean the fryer with acid to get the grease off, you shouldn't eat the food fried in it. I've heard about cleaning fryers that used hydrogenated oils before we all knew about transfats and they had to use acid to get the gunk off the fryers. I stopped using that kinds of oil a long time ago. Yuck.

I had the same experience the other day. I had zero time and brought home a bag of Wendy's for everyone...because that's what they wanted. and i didn't get anything for myself. not even a diet coke! i had half of a nugget and that was it. i felt sort of guilty for giving my fam such crap.......but more proud that i didn't get anything. its not often that they eat fast food. and after reading this....it will be even more infrequent!

A real eye-opener, eh? The sad thing about it is, fast food doesn't HAVE to be so murderous. Yes, I said "murderous" because they know exactly what they are putting into their food that we put into us. It's all in the name of the almighty dollar and they don't really care about our health...sure, they offer a few "lite" meals to make themselves look healthy-conscious, but c'mon...

But BACK TO YOU! You have come so far, have worked so hard, and dang it, you are to be proud of yourself! You have done an amazing, awesome job. Now is the time now to not look back and exclaim any what ifs, or "I should have's." The important thing is that you are doing it now and you are setting the example for your children. And the fact that you ARE doing this is going to keep you around longer to keep setting those examples for your kids. It's all a win-win, friend.

Yeah. That was you. BUT NOT ANYMORE!

Wow, you always hear how bad fast food is for you, but when you see the hard facts, it really hits home, doesn't it?

Brad, you are one of my favorite Sparkers -- you have an awesome attitude and are extremely dedicated to this new road to health! Way to go, look at how quickly your new habits have become normal!

This was a great blog. You've inspired me to look up the counts on some foods that I used to eat and post them somewhere so I can remind myself, when I'm thinking of eating that second something-or-other, that that was the old me and I have control over what I choose to eat.

Brad, it is great that you took such a humungous step to change your life around, its nice you are one of the few people who did break from the constant of Maccas eating ANd woke up to reality and seeing how it wasn't good for you. For me i am not that strong yet to go to maccas and just have a drink. My youngest too pretty much only eats chicken nuggets when we are out. And seeing those numbers is amazing, i remember when i was pregnant with my first, i was really gullible. My husband working shifts at maccas did not help either. People told me i could eat anything i like in my pregnancy and it be alright, sigh i wish i had someone back then to tell me no you should eat healthier and its only 300 calories more than your normal eating when your pregnant, But even so gaining all that weight back then, i am making the step now to loose it, for good , Its great to know you are too and what a great weight loss you have had is amazing :)

Fast food kills. I used to be the fast food queen. Frequently eating 2 or more meals a day through the drive through. It was an addiction--the food and lazy comvenience. I avoid it altogether now.

Congratulations on making this life saving change!

It's incredible how quickly all those calories added up, and many of us do think nothing of ordering that - for one meal!

But, you've been doing so well, you should be very proud of yourself!

You are on the right track - for food, for exercise, and for living!

My husband is addicted to fast food places and we usually hit one once a week at least. I watch my choices and allocate enough calories towards it and usually stay within my calories limits. We both order any food without salt but I still think most salads are a bit healthier.. even if I have to leave some behind. Always check to see what will fit into your calorie range BEFORE you go to eat. emoticon

A Whirlwind 36 Hours...

Wednesday, August 15, 2012

I knew when Monday came around that this would be a busy week! Boosted by my successful weigh-in on Monday, I figured I would be able to knock this out with no problem!

Ok, so maybe not no problems.

I started back to work for the first time in nearly 6 weeks (school is back in session) so that was going to be a big change in schedule. Also, the kids are back in school (Evan in 2nd grade, Calli & Sydni in 1st grade) so that causes some strain on the schedule as well. Despite all of these changes, I am steadfast in continuing my strict workout & eating schedule.

Tuesday, after work, I had tickets to go to Cincinnati to see the Reds play the Mets. Cincinnati is about an hour and a half away from me. With my day at work and my trip to Cincinnati for the evening, where was I going to find time to workout? My answer...

5:15am!

I woke up Tuesday morning at 5:15 to do my Insanity workout to get it in for the day! Obsessed much? lol. Try telling April of this year Brad that I would be getting up at 5:15am to workout and he would have laughed at you. But the August Brad got up and did it and it felt pretty good once I woke up!

It was also going to be a challenge to stay on the diet for the day being gone all day and traveling and all those things. So I packed all my daily food in my cooler and took it with me! I resisted all the great food smells at the ballpark (not easy at all!) and only had 1 frozen strawberry daiquiri at the game. I didn't think that was to bad. I also took in my usual Cinnamon Roasted Almonds and my protein bar so I was pretty good on the food front.

Anyways, I didn't get home until 12:30am. Had to be up at 5:30am to take my daughter to the hospital to have her tonsils & adenoids removed. She also had ear tubes put in. Everything went well and she is now at home napping with Grandma. She was such a trooper that she even turned down pain meds before she left the hospital!

So now I am back at work and writing this on lunch. I am trying to keep pushing through today so I can have enough energy to get my workout in after work. I am already pretty tired and can imagine in another 4 hours I will be even more so.

But, I will do it. I will not use my schedule as a crutch to skip my workout like I have done in past years. I will keep pushing!

Good Day Sparkville

Woohoo, great attitude!!! I think one of our biggest tests is when we are put back in situations where we have had fun in the past but didn't always make the best choices -- I find that's when I have the most trouble (like visiting a store on a whim that I KNOW has killer brownie chunk cookies -- no, no no!). Our ability to turn away the tempting stuff and stick to the plan, as you are doing with the game and work, shows just how much we've changed for the better! Good for you!

(And I commend you on the 5:15 AM workout -- that is mountains beyond me, way to go!!)

It's Been 100 Days! How Many Pounds Down You Say?

Monday, August 13, 2012

My long awaited weigh-in day has finally arrived! I have had a lot of good feelings and angst about today's weigh-in. I have literally been working my butt off with my diet and exercise since my last weigh-in on June 19th. 54 days later, here we are.

Just so happens that today is 100 days since I started on May 5th. I was really hoping to see the scale down 24 lbs since my last weigh-in. That was the goal. Any more would be a nice bonus, any less would be a bit of a disappointment.

So, I was in a meeting and had a break. I work at a school and weigh-in at the school on their wrestling scale. It is in a locker room in the basement underneath a gym. Needless to say, there was nobody else in the building at the time. So I sat on the bench near the scale and turned on some music on the iPod. The song that came on was Mat Kearney "Where We Gonna Go From Here". So I listened to that and reflected on how much work I have been doing to get this lifestyle changed around. It has been a great 100 days but also quite hard. I thought about how I would feel depending on what the number said on the scale. Once I got my mind right, I got up on the scale and it said I had lost...

24.7 lbs!!!

So I was right on my goal number with just a bit extra! Awesome! I was and still am really happy about that and it was a pretty big relief as well! It brings my weight loss total since May 5th to 58.6 lbs!!!

So, what now? I still have 108.4 to lose to reach my goal but I need something a little more short term I think.

So my next goal is to lose 25.4 lbs. by October 17th (my birthday). That would put just past the half way mark towards my overall goal. 25.4 in 64 days is totally reachable!

Thanks for all the support from all you my Spark friends! You guys have helped much more than I can ever say. Thank you!

I WILL DO THIS!
I AM DOING THIS!
I WILL NOT STOP!

Keep Pushing!

Good Day Sparkville
