What is the deal with all the sodium...

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Seriously! In my best Jerry Seinfeld voice, what is the deal with all that sodium?

For over 2 months now, I have been eating great! I I have been within my carb, calorie, and fat ranges for probably 64 of the last 67 days! I think that is pretty impressive and I am making good progress. Within the last couple of months, I have mixed & matched foods on different days to get in my ranges of those categories and others like fiber, Vitamin C, and protein (and I do track them all daily). I have had 1 problem category the entire time...

I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I have been within my sodium range for a day. One hand out of 67 days!

I know that packaged and processed foods and all of that makes it really hard. Those things are packed with sodium to keep "fresh" and to keep their flavor. Fine, but what a pain in the butt.

I tell myself that if sodium is my one bad category, I will be ok, and I have been. I guess it is just kind of frustrating to be so good in all the categories and see that sodium category high day after day!

So I guess I will just have to take the good of the other categories and try not to worry about the sodium to much, right? Does everyone have this problem? Anyone have any good ways to cut down on sodium?

Good day Sparkville!

I agree with both of the other commenters. The best way to be in range is too make everything yourself. No pre-packaged food. Now, I have trouble with that, and as a single dad, it is probably almost impossible for you. Buy frozen/fresh veggies instead of canned (anything canned with be high in sodium most likely..and have BPA in it). Stay away from soups/lunchmeats/sausages ect that are high in sodium (boo). Cheese and bread is also a source of higher sodium levels. If you eat salad, choose the regular fat one instead of the fat free since they just load those up with sugar and salt to mask the fat-free-ness. I am sure you know most of this already though!

Really, weight loss is the important part. Exercising regularly can help combat the effects of sodium, but that is not to say that people who exercise can't have high blood pressure.

I say, keep up with what you are doing, since it seems to be working. Make regular trips to the doctor and always have your blood pressure checked. Prevention is always best, but there is only so much we can do. We aren't perfect, and we live in a country that is counter-productive to our goals.

It is a huge pain in the rear. I've been able to keep within the lines or very close to it with a good amount of my food being pre-packaged. Here is my opinion, if you are dropping the weight then that is the most important first step. Just remember the eating habits that landed us here, sodium wasn't even nearly a concern. Eventually high sodium leads to high blood pressure so it needs to be addressed at some time but my bet would be that most doctors would say weight loss is the main priority.

It's nice having most of the summer off work, but...

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

Don't get me wrong, perhaps the best part of my job in the vacation schedule. I work at The Kentucky School For The Blind in Louisville, so that means I am on a school schedule and get things like 2 weeks off for vacation at Christmas, spring break, and of course I get almost the entire summer off of work. But...

Since I am a single Dad and their mom is in Chicago or wherever (not that I care, but she just doesn't see them) it means I am responsible for their entertainment for most of the summer. Oy vey that can be a pain in the butt! Seriously, I may start pulling out my hair if I hear "i'm bored" one more time! Now, it is nice that they have neighborhood friends to ride bikes with, come over and swim with, or jump on the trampoline with. Of course their is a but to that as well. But, the problem is when they all want to come in and I have anywhere from 7-10 kids all under the age of 8 in the house!!! Read that again and let it sink in a bit! By the way, my son is 7 and twin girls who are 6, so I am only biologically responsible for 3 of them!

So all of this makes working out harder. I did get my aptly named Insanity workout in today, which is good. We also went for a bike/walk this morning and plan to do it again this evening. Guess it is all a little frustrating sometimes doing this all myself most of the time!

Hate to vent much on here but I thought it might help keep me sane...even if it's only for the rest of the day!

Good Day Sparkville!

Menu made & on my way...

Monday, July 09, 2012

It was a pretty good day all around. I stuck to my menu that I made for myself last night so I was within my range of calories, carbs, fat, and protein. I kind of like making my daily menu the night before. I feel more organized and less likely to stray away and eat something bad.

Speaking of eating something bad, I really don't have a craving for it. I don't really have any feeling of wanting fast food or any of that. I'm not real big on fast food type stuff anyways so that isn't real hard but I just don't want any of it right now! I have this train on the tracks and it is full steam ahead! The eating healthy and working out has really just become second hand now...its just the norm!

Time to pop open the Spicy Three Pepper Hummus and Wheat Thins for a quick snack and then hit the sheets!

Good night Sparkville!

I had a similar realization recently -- I'm reaching for the fruits and veggies without even thinking about the bad stuff! And I look forward to those healthy treats! That is a major milestone when you've changed tastes like that, way to go!

Today was a "Thriller"...

Sunday, July 08, 2012

Ohio River near my house at sunrise

What a crazy day and now I have an extra 7 year-old and 5 year-old (neighbor kids) here. Sometimes it just feels like I collect kids around here! I wouldn't mind seeing a nice peaceful sunrise like my picture that I took a few months back! Doesn't it look relaxing? Just getting some peace & silence around here tonight will be relaxing. I just do my blog, eat my Wheat Thins with hummus, and take it easy. I've earned it today! I actually feel like I have earned a vodka/cranberry but I will save that for another day :)

Anyways, even with the long day, I still got my usual Insanity workout in. Plus, I got a bit of a bonus workout with the kids playing The Michael Jackson Experience for the Wii. We hadn't played in awhile and I forgot how much fun that game is. We also have the Just Dance games but we didn't get into that today. I figured 40 minutes of dancing to the likes of "Bad", "Smooth Criminal", and "Thriller" would be good enough for one afternoon!

I must admit, the "Smooth Criminal" one is my favorite! I mean the dance and the song I think. It's hard to pick with so many good ones!

Have a great night Sparkville!

My Odd-yssey - Insanity, Week 1 in Review & Numbers...

Saturday, July 07, 2012

My view (my pic) for Thunder Over Louisville fireworks back in April. Best fireworks show in the country!

For the first 56 days, I wanted to drop some weight by just eating right so it would be easier on my knees and feet when I started a workout program. So down 33.9lbs., I started the Insanity workout program. When I wasn't working out, I averaged about 1,750 calories a day. I knew when I started working out that I would have to increase my calories.

Keep in mind that I am 6'7" and have 167 lbs. to lose so 1,750 is low but I spread it out and it worked for me.

Spark says I can have between 2,220-2,570 calories/day. Here is my week in calories...

July 1 - 2,206
July 2 - 2,218
July 3 - 2,219
July 4 - 2,228
July 5 - 2,285
July 6 - 2,282
July 7 - 2,284 (already have my menu done for the day)

I was right around my minimum each day which is exactly what I am going for!

As for fat, Spark says I can have between 49-100. My week in fat...

July 1 - 16
July 2 - 27
July 3 - 22
July 4 - 31
July 5 - 36
July 6 - 37
July 7 - 31 (already have my menu done for the day)

I want to average between 35-40 a day. Trying to tweak my diet a bit to get enough.

As far as Carbs, Spark says I can have 250-418. My week in carbs....

July 1 - 337
July 2 - 330
July 3 - 328
July 4 - 329
July 5 - 337
July 6 - 337
July 7 - 344 (already have my menu done for the day)

I am perfectly happy with being in that 330 range!

As for protein, Spark says I should have between 60-225. My week in protein...

July 1 - 189
July 2 - 175
July 3 - 186
July 4 - 169
July 5 - 168
July 6 - 166
July 7 - 170 (already have my menu done for the day)

Really happy with my numbers for the week.

It can be difficult at time but I am constantly tweaking things to get in the ranges I need to be. It is a constant thing and kind of fun making it a challenge. Really happy with my week 1 with these numbers and I WILL KEEP GOING!

*260 fitness minutes for the week & 3,416 calories burned!

I think I am the same way about liking numbers. I get very interested in trying to adjust my menu to try to get in the target ranges. It is like a game sometimes. I guess if it triggers our interest it will keep us going. Awesome job with tracking. Keep it up!

Thank you guys for the kind words! Helps keep me motivated for sure!.

I like keeping records of what I do. First, it helps that I like numbers. Second, it helps keep me accountable. I like that.

It is hard to get in all the ranges. My fat was way low at first and I had to make some adjustments. A good idea is to instead of getting everything low fat or fat free, to actually buy the real thing. It won't really change much calorie wise but if you are low on fat, it can help.

I used to get frustrated as well but it is much better to stay positive and do the best you can. You can really make a big difference with a small tweak here or there.

Wow, you are doing a fantastic job staying within your ranges! I agree with TRYAGIN, that is a great idea to keep a day-to-day record of everything.

There are some days that I don't meet all of my ranges -- sometimes I'm a tad over, but usually the problem is falling short of my minimum numbers. All those fruits and veggies mean less calories, and often less fat for the day! I used to get really frustrated with myself, but I do my best, and I don't force myself to eat and make up the difference as long as I'm close. Excellent job!

You know I've been tracking my calories, but haven't been keeping track
of how I am doing over time. That's a good idea. Great job this week on your numbers.
