My Odd-yssey, Tap Out XT & Nutrition Week 16 By The Numbers...

Monday, October 22, 2012

I have finished 16 weeks of working out & diet! Had a pretty good week overall. I was a little worried with birthday celebrations (and I appreciate all of the birthday wishes from my Spark friends) and all that but I did get in all my exercise and stuck to my diet pretty well. I was able to enjoy some pumpkin spice cake which is FANTASTIC! If anyone is interested, I can share the recipe. It is really simple and cheap...and pretty healthy overall!

Here are my week 16 numbers...

Spark says I can have between 2,010-2,360 calories/day.

October 14 - 2,017
October 15 - 1,892
October 16 - 2,071
October 17 - 2,082
October 18 - 1,951
October 19 - 2,011
October 20 - 2,004

I averaged 2,004.0. Aiming for around my minimum of 2,010. Almost right on the number and I am really happy with that! Will be aiming for more of the same for week 17.

As for fat, Spark says I can have between 45-92. My week in fat...

October 14 - 40
October 15 - 37
October 16 - 37
October 17 - 41
October 18 - 34
October 19 - 34
October 20 - 37

I averaged 37.1 I was aiming for around 40. Lower than I have been the last couple weeks so I need to get my numbers up a bit.

As far as Carbs, Spark says I can have 226-384. My week in carbs....

October 14 - 256
October 15 - 232
October 16 - 242
October 17 - 249
October 18 - 220
October 19 - 235
October 20 - 228

I averaged 237.4 I was aiming for being as close to my Spark minimum(226) as possible. Really happy with the week in carbs!

As for protein, Spark says I should have between 60-206. My week in protein...

October 14 - 174
October 15 - 171
October 16 - 167
October 17 - 176
October 18 - 165
October 19 - 165
October 20 - 151

I averaged 167.0. Wanted to average over 170. Just a little low but I am not far off!

*460 fitness minutes for the week*

*4,869 calories burned*

I got in all of my Tap Out workouts but I didn't get a lot of extra time walking. That cut into my minutes and calories burned for the week. It was my first week under 500 minutes and 5,000 calories in over a month! That won't happen again this week!

I WILL NOT STOP! I WILL KEEP GOING!

Good Day Sparkville

Saw your comments on SABRINASARAH's page about doing TapOut and was interested in how you like the program. Now I see that you also completed INSANITY. I have 3 weeks left of INSANITY and love it; sorta looking for what to move on to next. I am thinking pretty strongly about going for Asylum, but I'm curious about TapOut. From someone who has done both, do you have any advice? BTW, you are inspiring the heck out of me! Your numbers are AMAZING!

I have a question... how do you track your strength training? I assume your Tap-Out has weights involved (like P90X?) That was always the area I had problems with on here. I used strength training:moderate when I did P90X.

Half-Way on the 17th

Thursday, October 18, 2012

The 17th was my birthday which is supposed to be a good enough day in its own. Don't get me wrong, the birthday stuff was fun and I am grateful to my friends and family for caring so much and making my birthday the fun it was.

With that said, a couple other nice little bonuses fell in line with my b-day, the 17th. First, the 17th was officially the last day of Tap Out XT week 6 for me! Big deal, right? YES! It is a 12 week program so I am officially done with half of Tap Out! wOOt wOOt! Hard to believe I am already half-way done.

Also, my next scheduled weigh-in was not until November 5th. But, since it was my b-day, I thought I would slide in an extra weigh-in to see what I was on that day! Good news is that I lost 1 more pound over the last 12 days. Kind of slow but I will take it. Even better news is that it puts me at 83.6 total which is half-way to my weight loss goal I set when I started Spark 165 days ago!

So I am officially half-way on Tap Out and half-way on my weight loss. Hopefully the second half of both goes just as well!

My Dog Tate

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Me & My Dog Tate in November of 2010

Tate is around 4 years old. I say around because he was a rescue and I don't know when he was born exactly. He is a mix of probably Jack Russell and Chihuahua. He is such a good dog with the kids. He lets them carry him around and play with him and he just eats it up. He rarely barks and is even good with other dogs.

I got him mainly for the kids to have a pet about 2 years ago. We named him Tate and with his coloring and all, we call him Tater. Of course, I like to call him Tater Vader or Darth Tater because he is such a menacing dog!

But Tate has been going through a hard time this last week. Last week he ran from home and one of my girls found him on the side of the road in our neighborhood with labored breathing and very little movement in his body. I took him to the vet only to be told they have no idea what is wrong with him. He shows no outer signs of being hit by a car and has no broken bones.

Tate has had very little function on the left side of his body. His legs don't work right and even his nose doesn't move on the left side. It almost seems like he got hit in the head and had some sort of stroke. Maybe. But the whole thing is really a mystery.

The biggest problem is that he wasn't drinking much water. His other really big problem is not having his bowels move right for about 6 days. The vet has been in constant contact and getting updated on his progress and discussing options.

Late Sunday night, hope seemed to be lost for Tate. He didn't seem to be doing well and we really started discussing the options of having him put down. That is sad to me anyways but when you consider it was the kids first pet, I worried so much how they would take it. Needless to say, Sunday night into Monday morning was pretty emotional all the way around.

Monday came around and as a last minute kind of thing we tried giving him steroids as prescribed by the vet. Since Tate has started steroids Monday morning, he has shown great improvement walking and drinking. He seems to have more energy and is back closer to himself than he was! He still isn't 100% but I am happy to say that he has made significant strides in his recovery and the vet says that he sees no reason why he can't make a full recovery from whatever when wrong with him!

GREAT NEWS!

I wanted to share with all you great Spark people a story that I have been dealing with for a week and let you all in on the great news (fingers crossed for more)! Its been a trying week for sure but family and friends, including Spark friend Michelle have really helped me figure this out and deal with it emotionally, especially involving the kids in this. Thank you for all of your support and kindness! Maybe Tate felt a little bit of that to and kept him pushing forward!

Some pics of Tate over the last 2 years...

Poor Tate :( It is so hard to see them go through a rough time. I am so glad he is making such a great recovery! He is such a cutie.

Pets really are a big part of our lives. We lost our first dog, Toby, a little over two years ago (my kids were 3 and 5 at the time). Even though we have another dog who they love to pieces, they still talk about Toby and miss him.

Wishing Tate full healing! I had to make the difficult decision this summer to euthanize our 14+ year old resue lab/German Shepard. The pain meds and steroids had stopped working and she was in pain with hips. :-(

Poor Puppa! I hope things are going well with him. He is a cutie pie. It's hard to go through something like that with a pet, they can't tell you what is going on. Then they just look at you with those sad eyes, like uh- Mom/Dad- fix it! My pets are just like my kids, and going through something traumatic with them is just as hard on us emotionally. Trust me (that is a story for another time). Prayers to Tate for a speedy recovery and let me know if you need anything at all.

EMMAEKAY 10/17/2012 12:13AM

Holy crap, I am so happy he's recovering! I've done rescue for around 5 years, and if there's one thing I've learned, it's that a dog will fight as long as we can bare to watch him do it. With a good, involved vet and a lot of TLC, dogs come back from the most devastating stuff sometimes! Depending on where you live, could he have been bitten by a rattler or a poisonous spider? A glancing bite from a rattlesnake could have caused some very similar symptoms. It could have even been an allergic reaction to a swallowed wasp or bee.

But also, since he's a longer spined dog, have they taken a look to see if he had/has a pinched nerve or disk out of place somewhere? Since he's responding really well to the steroids, I guess that would be my first thought, since a steroid would bring down the inflammation of a bulging disk / nerve pinch. Second guess would be allergic reaction to eating a bee/wasp/bug.

Either way, super glad he's improving!

I am officially in love. Yes. He has too much cuteness and life in him to give up just yet. He's gotta some 'splainin' to do why he got so sick and scared everyone like that! But in those cute little eyes is a fighter...he got that from his owner, didn't he???

I'm still praying a bunch for that sweet little feller. Godspeed on his full recovery. Losing a sweet darling pup like that seems incomprehensible and it IS NOT HIS TIME YET! PRESS ON TATER VADER! GO FOR GOLD DARTH TATER! You got lots of love to get you through this!

This Is All The Motivation I Need!

Tuesday, October 09, 2012

Sydni (6), Evan (7), Calli (6)

They say a picture can speak a thousand words. Well, the picture above speaks a number to me that is so big that I can't put a number on it.

Those are my babies.

That's my inspiration.

That's my life.

They are what I am most proud of in my life. They are what frustrates me more than anything in life. They are what is most rewarding to me. They are what I am most protective of. They are what I worry about the most. They are why I get tears in my eyes when I hear "There Goes My Life" by Kenny Chesney. They are the best thing that has ever happened to me.

My son, Evan, is 7 years-old and is in 2nd grade. He loves fire trucks & trains.

The girls are twins. They look and act nothing alike. Calli is 6 and is in 1st grade. She is older by 1 minute.

Sydni is 6 and is in 1st grade. Her nickname is "Peanut" and is the social one of the three.

I could say I want to lose weight to be healthier. True. I could say I want to lose weight to fit clothes better. True. I could say I want to lose weight to be more active. True. I could say I want to lose weight to hopefully be around longer. True.

All that is true, but being a great Dad and being an example that my kids can be proud of is the most important thing to me and is all the motivation I need!

How sweet! (Your kids and your tribute to them.)

I definitely agree with you -- being able to be a good example for my kids is a huge motivation to be healthier. So is being more than a parent whose interaction with them largely consists of reading books.

Oh. My. Heavens. DO YOU REALIZE HOW ADORABLE THEY ARE?! Of course you do, that's why you're bragging about them! :) My BABY is a junior in college...trust me they grow up so fast. You are so blessed. Love them, squeeze them, laugh with them, all the days of your life because they are precious beyond compare. And really, what better motivation could you have??? One day you'll be posting pics of your grandkids, lol!! Hey, do you realize the great example you're setting for them by getting healthier?? My goodness, Brad, you're the man!

Great blog! You have beautiful children!

I am right there with you on the reasons to get healthier. I want to be a better role model for my kids, but I also want to play with them. My kids have so much fun when we play tag & hide & go seek.

Good luck with your goals!

Brad, I love this blog. Love love LOVE it!!! Those smiling faces are plenty motivation -- and the fact that you put them first is fabulous. Not only will you be a more active father physically, but you will set an example for them. Way to go!!!

Beautiful kids. They are truly benefitting from your lifestyle changes. I'ts great you are doing this while they are still young and malleable.

Those 3 would make anyone want to get in better shape. You have the greatest gifts a man can have. Cherish them, love them, but most of all be around for them as long as posible.
