Looks like snow

Thursday, January 07, 2010

We're definitely not getting pounded with the kind of weather further east (at least not yet anyways, knock on wood!) I woke up this morning to a lot of wind and some telling gray skies. Looks like some snow might be on it's way. A lot of people ask me if it's very warm here in Santa Fe year-round and are surprised to hear that it's not. We're at 7,000 feet in the high desert which means that summers average in the mid 80's and we get some pretty darn cold winters. Also, it's super dry (making it easier to drink that water!)

It's very beautiful here though, even on a cloudy day. Being from Washington state originally I still can't get over how many blue sky days there are here. I lived on the eastern side of Washington so it didn't rain as much as in Seattle or on the peninsula, but it still got very cloudy especially in the fall and winter. Here it can be freezing but the sun is shining and the sky is so blue you don't even care anymore.

Lots to do today. Need to get in contact about volunteering for the Revolutions theatre festival...I'm a little late...in my defense I thought I was going to be out of the country...yeah...Also, I should really get back to my online classes and do the homework. I need to call financial aid and ask for more moneys plz k thx. And if I'm brave enough to face the wind I must go to Borders which is really only about four blocks away.

Interesting dance practice last night. I was practicing a step that was giving me trouble in class and all of a sudden it was easy. So now I don't know if I was just overwhelmed in class or if I'm practicing it wrong (and therefore making it easier) at home. I have to wait until Saturday to find out I guess.

I'm running!

Wednesday, January 06, 2010

Well, in intervals at least emoticon Day 2 of the Couch to 5k program down. I think that's the most I've ever committed to running. I decided to try this program because I had been adamantly avoiding incorporating running into my fitness. When I finally asked myself why I realized it was because I was afraid of the hard work. I had always made excuses that "I'm just not a runner" or "it's not for me" but I realized that I never actually seriously tried doing it. So here's me trying!

I need the cardiovascular shape-up and it's a challenge for me. Here's hoping I keep at it, I'm really curious to see if I can actually do it.

I've got legs!

Tuesday, January 05, 2010

I slept in an extra hour this morning (I'm on winter break!) and geez did I need it. I woke up at my usual time and just *felt* exhausted. I hope I'm not overdoing it with the exercise. I knew that starting the Couch to 5k program would make me tired and I was right! I didn't start it until I had rested a couple days from oriental dance class but my hips still feel like they're going to fall off. I think some gentle stretching, a walk, and lots of water are in order today.

Also, I started the 28 day program in The Spark. I want to show this book to anyone who is interested so I figured that I should go through the 28 day program myself so I wouldn't be a hypocrite emoticon I'm in maintenance mode as far as weight goes but I've got fitness goals still to achieve, and it never hurts to go back to the basics! So I've got three new fast break goals:

1) Listen to a get-up-and-go song every day (woohoo!)
2) Drink 8 glasses of water per day
3) Exercise 10 minutes per day

I will be with these goals for the next six days and then it's time for stage two. Also, in my last post I wrote that I want to write 2 pages a day. Well I've been going nuts and I wrote a lot more the past two days! I forget that in writing momentum builds momentum and makes it easier to get past the grinding halt of writer's block. I hope this keeps up!

2010 Goals

Monday, January 04, 2010

Ok, here they are. Perhaps I will add more, perhaps these will be fluid and revise themselves to my needs as time goes on. But here they are!

Long Term Goals:

1) Join Dell'Arte International and complete their Professional Training Program, class of 2011 (Yes, this is a goal that could be blocked by not being accepted to the program, but I will work for it nonetheless).

2) To be invited to join a pre-professional dance company at the oriental dance studio I have joined (An old goal that I realized I can't get out of my head -- must be a good one! emoticon)

3) Increase my physical fitness, specifically strength training and cardiovascular endurance over the year.

4) Increase my financial fitness by learning to track my money better

5) Continue trying to live in an environmentally conscious manner by continuing the steps I have been taking and looking for more ways to help.

6) To publish a play/story/whatever in some format, either web or print

7) To have a great wedding emoticon

The Mid-Term Goals for those long term goals:

1) Audition in the spring for the 2010 - 2011 year Dell'Arte Professional Training Program class

2) Perform in at least one student salon/showcase/recital this year with the dance studio

3) Complete the Couch to 5K program and the hundred pushups program

4) Track all my expenses for a month

5) Keep the trash to 1/2 bag per week or no more than 1 bag per week. Make a recycling plan for items the city doesn't pick up and do some research on possibly getting a program for curbside recycling these items. Investigate solar power for the house.

6) Have a first draft by the end of December 2010.

7) Take inventory at the beginning and end of each month at where we are in our wedding planning

Short term goals for those mid and long term goals:

1) Explore audition work in the Ensemble class. Reflect on my theatre work once a day in a journal, at least a paragraph. Read two plays a month. Practice a foreign language at least 10 minutes a day.

2) Dance at least ten minutes a day.

3) Record and follow the schedules for the C25K and hundred puhsups challenges.

4) Record expenses at the end of the day

5) Donate unwanted items. Buy produce without plastic bags. Reuse containers.

6) Write two pages per day. They can be part of a larger draft or anything else as long as I'm writing.

7) Talk about wedding planning and make schedules for consultations etc. once a week.

Ok, that's it! On top of all this I need to graduate from the university and find a new job. But I'm optimistic!
emoticon

Dance stuff

Monday, January 04, 2010

I needed to practice my oriental dance today but my hips were so sore from class yesterday that I wasn't sure what to do. I knew that too much movement below the waist would be a bad idea so I decided to try and dance from the waist up since class wasn't very upper-body focused for me that day...

Wow! I just danced to three songs using nothing but my rib cage, shoulders, and arms! It looked so cool too and it forced me to be very expressive with them. Sometimes I think in this type of dance the arms and shoulders are overlooked in favor of rib cage isolations and of course lots of hipwork. Too bad, because when the arms and shoulders are included it looks great!

What a great idea! It definitely takes listening to your body and responding as appropriate. Keep it up, you'll be tearing up the floor with those other dances in no time!

I have also had a hard time with dance, especially after a ballet folklorio class. It is a beautiful cultural dance, but so hard on the knee joints, and for us out of shape people it really is a cardio buster.

To help alleviate some of the stress on joints, I took less impact dance classes, such as salsa and country. I am using those to build up my stamina so I can again go to ballet folklorio, irish step dance and swing. I am working on learning the Jive now, though and I love it.
