Which label to believe???

Wednesday, March 20, 2013

I have been having oat bran for breakfast for a while now. I am confused by the labels on the two brands available in my local grocery. What do you think when the serving size doubles from one to the other, but the calorie count goes up only 30 calories? How could that be? Both list oat bran as the only ingredient.

Hodgsens Mill

What do you think?

Today is the first day of Spring according to the calendar.

This is the view out my door...looking at our young willow tree (and down the driveway).

Spring is springing here! Daffodils began blooming in January...lots of other things coming up and blooming, too. These are the leaves on the willow tree!

Naptime for our chickens under the privet hedge. Most of these are only half grown. We have a very few of our last flock left..two roosters and a few hens.

The difference in the oat bran calorie counts could be this. Dr. Oz just said the other day that the nutritional info on product packaging just has to be something like 75% correct. Go figure!! That could mean a lot of difference.

The hens nap by just nestling down as if they were in a nest. The squatting thing is much like when the rooster pursues them for mating. I cn see how a hen might do that if it were expecting to be picked up (ours are not that tame). I have thought I had dead hens on a number of occasions when they sunbathe and dust in the driveway or dirt...they lie on their sides, legs and wings extended...and look dead!

If you're getting spring, we should be getting autumn...yay. My nephew had a Rhode Island hen called Flower. Flower used to squat every time my nephew came near and this enabled him to pick her up and carry her around. Sadly it gave the staff on the farm an easy target. Flower disappeared and we assume she ended up being dinner.

Oh I love the pics, makes me wanna come visit.

As for the Oat Bran, the differences are in the way they are processed. I have found that Kroger brands are better tasting and are more accurate on their labels. We use mainly Kroger products now.

Just noticed that the 1/4 cup for the one and 1/2 cup for the other equals 40 grams on both! another mystery to me!

I would say perhaps at a guess it is the way the oats are made or processed that I think, can have a lot to do it with it?

My mother and I for instance only eat organic steel cut oats not minute oats etc..

Love your photo's. Thanks for sharing them.

More pick up Sticks

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

It poured rain yesterday with lots of wind to go with it. No walking in the field for me!

Today, though cool, is beautiful (and breezy). Daisy and I went out to the field for more pick up sticks. She is not coughing any more...I have been treating that with manuka honey and it seems to have helped. She is still panting alot with any exertion. Don't know if I can treat that or not.

ANYway...I did about 50 minutes of picking up sticks. As I was working it reminded me of when we first moved out here. We installed a Buck Stove for heat...but had no ready cut supply of firewood. We were out in the woods alot that year. DH was working a late shift so I often found myself gathering wood for the night...and many times, seeking small sticks and kindling to get the coals fired up again. Along with the branches and bark I am piling up, many of the sticks I am picking up would be well suited as kindling. I am pleased with my efforts.

DH told me he has seen the cows rubbing on everything to help shed the winter fur. I hope the cattle don't decide to try out my stick pile. They did sample the cedar branches in another pile..pulling out branches as they investigated.

One thing that always amazes me is how the field will look so dead..but when you walk out there, there is so much going on! Grass and weeds are greening up. Tiny flowers are blooming everywhere..but you don't see them from a distance. Here is a cell phone (mine is ancient) picture of some tiny blue flowers that absolutely delight me. They are EVERYwhere out there.

I'm glad Daisy is doing some better!

You've had your work cut out for ya with all that stick picking up.

Isn't Jehovah's creation just beautiful? It's so loving of him to provide us with all of this and get joy from it!

These flowers are TINY...maybe half the size of the nail on my little fingers! MUCH smaller than violets or morning glory. I will try to take a pic with something for comparison. When you are out walking, you don't even see them unless you look fields of color painting the grassland!

Lovely exercise esp the fact that its outdoors...and has man/woman's best friend with for company. The flowers look similar to what I know as Morning Glory...a blue forest creeper. Signs that your spring is on the way.
We are experiencing cooler weather now with mornings being really nippy.

Awesome, we have little violets all over our yard in full bloom. Lots of daffodils too.

I wish our cold nastiness would go away so our blooming could begin. We have a lot of things that will rebloom this year plus we have expanded our garden and added more bulbs for this year.

Pick up Sticks

Sunday, March 17, 2013

Step, step, step, bend and stretch. Step, step, step, bend and stretch. Such was the focus of my exercise today. Daisy is struggling with her health, but loves to walk and I think it is important for her to get any exercise she can off we went on our walk today. I took it at stroll pace for Daisy's sake. She stopped to lie down and rest twice..I think a visit to the vet is in our near future.

Anyway, I eventually got out in the middle of the field for my intended project. Pics are taken with my ancient cell phone. Note the stick debris in the foreground (you can barely see it...and it was strewned all over...all that is now picked up along with much more.

This tree had died some time ago, and a storm had brought down lots of branch and twig debris. DH will be cutting out some more of the usable firewood, but with our efficient woodburning stove we no longer need lots of little stuff. I am leaving some of the larger pieces to offer our neighbor who has a very small Buck stove, but the rest of the little stuff is what I am picking up and piling for a later burn.

And if I have uploaded these in the right sequence, this should be the end result of an hour worth of picking up sticks.

I know my pile of sticks doesn't look impressive, but remember many of these are very little sticks! There is still enough on the ground out there for another "walk" like this one.

It took Daisy and me another 15 minutes to walk back up to the it was a good morning walk. Our meeting at KH is at 5 pm so I still have plenty of time to get ready. DH was in the invitation work all morning.

Nice weather...great to get outside

Tuesday, March 12, 2013

I spent my morning in the ministry...we did a lot of walking and it was chilly, but great to be out. I loved seeing the trees budding out, flowers blooming or coming up in everyone's yards.

After I got home, Daisy and I headed out to the field area just in front of the house...where I spent an hour picking up sticks and dragging branches to a burn pile. We had so much damage a while back with a wind/rain storm that came through. I have been using my exercise/walk time to pick up sticks and begin piles that we can burn later. Some of the branches will require DH and the chain saw...but there is so much branch debris down, I figure I have lots of good exercise ahead.

This is the kind of stuff I am cleaning up.

This is just under an hour of stick/branch pick up.

Here is my partner/ helper!

Hyacinth blooming in the yard.

Oh..and one more regarding the field where the FitBit this pic taken from my "front" porch, look to the far tree line...and it was way out there that we found my missing gadget! (forgot to add the pic, hence the edit! lol)

Scriptures in Rhyme

via FB From: Ministry Ideaz
Scriptures in Rhyme

The command to go from door to door
is in verse 14 of Matthew 24.

We will live on earth, and not in heaven
says verses 10 & 11 of Psalm 37.

The name of God can clearly be seen
by turning to Psalm 83:18.

Sickness and death will be no more;
It's promised at Revelation 21:3 and 4.

Jehovah's word is always true
Because of what is said at Titus 1:2.

"Take in knowledge of my Father and me"
Jesus said at John 17, verse 3.

At death your soul will be no more,
so says Ezekiel 18:4.

144,000 will rule with God's son
This statement is at Revelation 14:1.

Children must obey parents to live eternally
So counsels Ephesians 6:1 to 3.

The animals will be at peace with mankind
as shown in Isaiah 11:6 to 9.

The reason why we don't go to war
is found in verse 3 of Micah 4.

To salute the flag is idolatry;
This lesson is from Daniel, chapter 3.

Remember "bad associations" aren't good, you see
According to 1 Corinthians 15:33.

We must attend meetings to stay alive
so says Hebrews 10, verse 25.

Take your troubles to Jehovah - He'll comfort you
That's what He promises at Psalm 55:22.
