30+ minutes of sitting signals body to store fat!

Today's Swanson Tip REALLY got my attention...especially one line stating that 30 or more minutes of sitting signals the body to start storing fat. WHAT!?

It said that not just THAT we sit, but how we sit is contributory to problems...slouching cuts off our abilty to breathe correctly, thus not supplying our body with enough oxygen which is necessary for the body to function properly in processing everything!

EVERYthing we do is sooo interconnected.

This is such a simple thing and should be easy to implement. MOVE..even just to stand and stretch...within every 30 minute period. Sit up to allow proper breathing.

I wonder if this is also connected to the fact that our brain stays focused only about 20 minutes..then, for better concentration, we should move!

Ok...I know...GET UP and GET MOVING! emoticon
(I don't know if this will take you to the tip I got today, or just to the library of their tips. Lots of good info either way.

    Yikes!!! I have a timer set on my computer so that I remind myself to get up and move every hour while I am working. But it looks like I need to change it to at least every 30 minutes! Thanks for sharing.

    It takes you to the tip you mentioned. Very very interesting, esp as so many of us sit for lengthy bouts with the work we do. Life has become so internet orientated. But getting up and walking or shaking yourself up is a great idea.

My "extra" mile

I recently discovered that my daughter's street is exactly one half mile long. I work for her as nanny to my grandson while she is working.

Once we got out of the intense heat days, I began trying to take DGS for a walk every day that the weather permits. I was shocked at the time it took the first day. Then I got it down to 17 min...then 15 and last Friday, 13.

I would be happy with 15 minutes each day. I am pushing a stroller with a 1+ yr old and sometimes have to stop to pick up hats, toys, shoes or who knows what he has thrown out. that affects the timing. Today we had a dog trying to lick his face so I had to keep dodging our new friend.

So, this one mile walk is my "extra" mile...can't do it every day..can't take it home with me for days I don't work. It is a nice perk for my job, good for my grandson as well. It's extra in addition to my daily exercise regime at home. Still trying to find ways to amp that up..but that is a topic for another day.

My husband asked me today: "How long till he wants to WALK it with you?" That's next. I remember when my kids put the kabosh on my daily exercise walks...they wouldn't stay in the stroller..they wanted to push it themselves. lol

    My kids still remember their in stroller power walks with me. Now, as theyare 9, 11, and 15, they walk with me every day. I refuse to pick them up from school by car, so we have a 2 + mile walk a day. I sure hope this wonderful weather hold up! Great job, setting the example!

I think these came from Dr. Oz. I am cleaning my desk and ran across this scrap of paper with these points:

#1 - Blood pressure 115/75

#2 - Waist under 30 inches

#3 - LDL under 100

#4 - BMI under 25 Never over 30

#5 - Ideal weight

(what I think were six and seven...not numbered on the list)

#6 - Get rid of HFC

#7 - Move 30 minutes a day

All good advice. Hope to achieve them all some day! Sure not there yet.

OOPS...there's more

#8 - 3 meals a day each meal containing protien, fiber and carb.

#9 - Multi vitamin

#10 - 3 small snacks: fruit or nuts

# 11 - Dessert every OTHER day.

Wonder if I got them all? Usually can't write as fast as the spoken message.

    Some thiungs I do others I don't. I know I won't be an 'ideal' weight till the New World but that's ok. At least I don't have to be skin and bones to be at the 'ideal' weight.

    Can't recall the last time my BP was that low,my waist was under 30" or I was at my ideal weight. I wonder if these goals will ever be achieved on this side of Armageddon?
