Too many pictures, too little time.

I have lots of pictures, but will only post a few. I didn't remember to take a picture of the forest trail than I ran on. I did 2.5 miles running on soft sand and ruts. Kind of fun, but my knees didn't like it.

This was taken at Buckhorn campsite, where we roughed it. No power or water or any hookups. The little RV is self-contained, so we had everything we needed. DW doesn't care for this type of camping, being out in the forest all alone. But, I love it, so we compromise. :)

    Such beautiful areas you are exploring. I love camping and being in the forest. My camping is with a tent which I'm sure your wife would not like LOL. But we all have our different tastes. Glad you both are able to compromise so that both of you get to experience the great vacation. Love the pics.

We have a gorgeous site this morning.

Today is day 9 - were moving to a different site later today. We'll still be in Apalachiacola Natl Forest. My Internet connection is snails pace, which makes it difficult to post.

West Florida road trip - lots of pictures, and a little commentary.

Left home on Wednesday the 17th. We are working our way north on the west coast of FL heading to the gulf coast.

We stayed 2 days at Manatee State Park.

On to St Georges Island State Park for one night

Beautiful white sand beach. I ran 4 miles on this beach, even though I didn't have my running shorts on. It was really cool, so I ran in jeans.

Our campsite was very secluded - nice and private.

Next day, we went to St Josephs Peninsula State Park, where we stayed for one night.

This campsite was open and visible to all the other campers. Nice neighbors made it very enjoyable.

Another white sandy beach, where we met this fisherman. He reeled in a good sized whiting while we talked. DW and I walked quite a ways on this beach then over to another campsite and back to ours. It felt like about 4 miles. Good exercise and wonderful scenery.

There was a boardwalk which crossed the swamp area, with lots of vegetation and plenty of sawgrass. The white dunes were visible farther away.

Right now we are parked in a Walmart lot and having a couple of slices of Papa John's Pizza for lunch. There is wifi available here, so I thought I'd post some pictures of our trip.
We stopped here because my battery went bad last night. I had been having some trouble with it, but confirmed it was sot this morning, when I checked it and it only showed 10.7 volts. Walmart gave me a pro-rated credit on the new battery, so I got about 55 dollars off the price on the new one.

After I post this blog, we're heading to St Andrews State Park CG for 2 nights, then on to Fort Pickens CG in Gulf Breeze, FL.

Will play it by ear after that, but I tentatively plan to spend some time in Apalachicola Nat'l Forest and Osceola Nat'l Forest as well.

It stinks that I pay every month for 3g connectivity on my iPhone, but seldom can get a signal when camped. Glad I found this wifi spot.

Will try and send some more info and pictures later this week.

    What a fun trip. We used to winter (snowbirds) along Alabama's coast and I have great memories of the beach, the fishing, the ocean, and the hiking trails.

Getting Old Is Not For Sissies

I really need to get serious about shedding my last few pounds.

I work out/ST pretty hard 3 times or so a week, depending on my race schedules. When I have races pending soon, I try to run hard in them, so I need to back off on hard ST, so I have energy for the races. I run usually 3 times a week. Trial and error has shown me that my knees can't take much more. I wish I could run every day like younger folks do.

Right now, I am in weight loss mode, so my calorie intake has gone down. This takes energy from my running -- running hard without substantial carb intake makes my long runs tough and tiring. But this is one of the benefits of not actually being in race training. I don't have to load up or maintain carb intake. I just eat about what I need for the day, and maybe a little extra protein. I'm not going for muscle mass, but more for a toned physique and low body fat.

It is very hard at my age to lose that last few pounds of fat. But, I am determined to do it. It's good for me to make a public statement of intention. Keeps me resolved to the task at hand.

My next scheduled race is the Tallahassee Marathon in November. I would like to be under 145 pounds for that race. My digital scale tells me I am 148 lbs this morning. (old joke: it didn't tell me anything, I had to look at it). But that scale seems flaky, it seems to jump around from one minute to the next. It just gives me a close guess at my weight. And then, depending on water/salt intake you all probably know your own weight can fluctuate wildly. Having said all that, my flaky scale never said 148 before. The lowest I could squeeze out of it previously had been 148.5, so I am losing slowly. Slow is good. I don't want to lose the little bit of hard earned muscle I have.

So that's what I am up to lately. Still trying to get in better shape.

    Sounds to me like you are one determined and motivated individual--kind of the up front, here it is type and what you're going to do about it--I like that. Good luck with those pesky pounds, as I get older myself I know how hard it is to lose a few.

    When you figure out the magic formula, please let us know! It's just not as simple as calories in, calories out as we age! Fortunately we are wise enough to know that it's a process - no fad diets, just hard work and lots of tweaking! emoticon

    That's the spirit. Go after those last few pounds! I've become too complacent at the top of my maintenance race. A bit of cushion would be good, and not the cushion for my rear end.

    You are right about old age not being for sissies, but it helps if we learn all the tricks that make it easier. I am not a runner and have never had knee problems, but both of my children have had to deal with them for years. My daughter is a massage therapist and personal trainer and has rehabbed her knees and went back to running. She also does kinesio taping and it has helped her knees. You are right the older we get the harder it is to lose the last 10 pounds. Keep up the good work and you will prevail.

    When I started trying to get healthy again, my doctor and I set a goal weight of 175. That still does not give me a technically healthy BMI. Since I reached that goal, I have been bouncing around it within 5 lbs. with a brief foray down to 165.

I do have a hitherto undocumented goal of 150 lbs. and this SparkBlog entry is inspiring me to memorialize it. I'm going to reset my goals, adjust my nutrition, and put up a ticker. That's going to knock me out of "at goal and maintaining", but I'm not proud. Thanks for the kick.

Old Guys Rule

Hugh Campbell is 88 years old. Like me, he started running later in life. In my case I was 65 years old when I did my first race. Hugh did his first race at the remarkable age of 86! Wow!

Suddenly, I don't feel like I got too late a start in running. Hugh has done well for himself. He says it's because he caddied his own golf clubs for many years. He developed good leg muscles with all that walking and toting. A slow but steady building of leg muscles.

Hugh has not only become a runner, but he's become a world champion in the process! He is breaking world records at the age of 88, and see no reason he can't do better as he gets older.

I did a 5K this past weekend and one of the racers was 74. And he beat some 30 year olds to the finish line!
