Changing my life one day at a time

Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Slowly but surely recovering from my Alaskan Cruise. Only up three lbs now and still dropping. Played pickleball early before it got so hot. Then catching up on my yard work. Was a good day. Golf tomorrow, can't wait. 5k training in the morning.

Grateful for not getting discouraged and the motivation to fight back. Thanks to all of you for your encouragement.

Changing my life one day at a time

Monday, July 14, 2014

Back home from my trip to Alaska. Was a wonderful trip, but it sure set my running and weight loss program back.

Had an ok run today but time was several mins slower than before my trip. Gained 5 lbs while I was gone. So it's time to get back to work and reestablish my routine. Going to work hard this week, goal is to cut my weight gain in half and get back to where I was running.

So easy to back slide and so hard to recover. But I've come too far to give up.

A change in schedule will do that to you. I have no doubt that once you get back into the swing of things, that weight will drop off, and your running time will improve!

North to Alaska, Day 11

North to Alaska, Day 11

Boarded the train at Danali train station, heading back to Ankorage where we'll fly to Houston tomorrow night and back to Pittsburg the following morning.

The train back to ankorage was wonderful. While it took 8 hrs it was very comfortable. So much better than the motor coach. If I never get on another bus again it will be to soon. We rode in special observation cars for Royal Caribean. We set on the second floor with large observation windows could see everything all around the train. The 1st floor was the dining car which served us a great lunch and diner off a menu. Much better food than the ship. The food on the ship was ok but certainly not great. But you could eat continuously if you wanted to.

The seats were very comfortable, reclined and had lots of leg room. The scenery was spectacular. Saw several moose, many of the mountain lakes were home to a pair of trumpeter swans. It was a very relaxed day finally. Did I mention each car had it's own bartender? He made a great smoothie. Easily our best travel day and one of the highlights of the trip.

The nicest thing about the land package was the convenience. We left our bags outside our room each morning and they were in our rooms when we arrived each evening. No check in lines, the guide gave us our keys when we got off the bus and we went directly to our room. Was very convenient.

Will leave you with a funny thought unless your from Texas. T shirt said if we split Alaska in two, Texas would be the third largest state.

Alaska was just awesome

North to Alaska. Day 10

North to Alaska - Day 10

On the road at 8am, Only a few hrs to Denali National Park. What amazing scenery, vast vistas of mts, glaciers, lakes and rivers. Only occasionally a gas station (4.30 per gallon) and small B&B.

Arrived at the park around 11am. Wow, definitely pristine wilderness. There is one road into the interior, 80 miles. Linda and I took the short tour (4 hrs, 18 miles). some short hikes. (The theme of this trip is WALKING). We stopped at a few vistas. Got to see my first grisly bear. He was a big boy, amazing how big just his head was. Was able to get some good pics of him. He stood up (must have been 8 or 10 ft tall. Looked like a huge cuddly teddy bear. Also saw a big female moose as well. Lots of mt views, saw the other side of Denali mountain as well.

The ranger gave us a safety lesson before the tour, moose are the most dangerous. If you see a moose run, they'll see you are afraid and leave you alone. If you see a bear, DONT RUN, he'll see you are afraid and will want to eat you. Stay calm, wave arms to make you seem bigger, talk to him and slowly walk away. Fortunately didn't get to see how effective the lesson was.

Another sunny and warm day. Two days in a row, shorts and no fleese again.

All in all very awesome. Everyone should visit. Praise God that Linda and I got the opportunity.

The adventure ends tomorrow. Taking the train back to ankorage tomorrow. Then our flight to Pittsburg Tuesday night. Hang in there sailor were on our way back.

Truly a trip of a lifetime.

How cool. Wish I were there. Kind of scared of the wildlife though.

North to Alaska Day 9

North to Alaska - Day 9

Up early and off to Talkeetna, where we will see mt McKinley. The Alaskans named it Denali, but some politician trying to get McKinley elected president got congress to rename it mt McKinley. Just one more thing the politicians messed up.

Another beautiful sunny day today, high going to be in the 80's. Shorts today, I knew there was a reason I brought them.

We stopped in Ankorage for lunch. Looked very much like a lower 48 city, all the chain stores, malls etc. while downtown for lunch, Linda spotted a quilt shop, I think the woman is psychic. A quick visit to the shop (yes the house will be adorned with Alaska quilts in the near future), quick lunch (more salmond, didn't catch any big enough to send home, but eating my share), and back on the bus.

Arrived in Talkeetna early afternoon. We looked out again, Great views of Denali (were Alaskans now). The tour guide said only 30% of the people get to see a glimpse of it as it's usually shrouded in clouds. Only 10% get the view we had. We went into town for dinner. Linda and I won the contest for taking and bringing back the first picture of the mayor, which happens to be a cat. Alaskans take their local government seriously. I think I'll nominate Sailor in the next Bluffton mayor election. Turns out he happens to hang out at the restaurant we went to. We have been so lucky this trip. Had a great cup of caribou chili and of course more salmon.

Talkeetna is the smallest town we've visited. It's where Northern Exposure tv show was based upon.

Back to the hotel which was very nice, picture this, there was a picture of a bull moose on the door with a warning, moose on the loose on the property, be careful. Didn't see the moose.

Took one more set of Denali at sunset (midnight). It never got dark. Pulled the shades shut and off to bed. Another long day. Don't look for me when I get home I'm going to sleep for a week.
