Health Screening

Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Our benefits department scheduled a free health screening for all full-time employees that are participating in one of the health care plans available through the company. I was happy to participate since it has been a little over a year since I've had my cholesterol and sugar levels checked at a regular physical.

I am so pleased with my results and even more excited to find out that I have dropped .9 points on my BMI since I had my body composition test done two weeks ago and 2.3% less body fat! This is great news!

The best news, however, was to see that all levels fall within range and at a desirable rate. Coming from a family with a long history of heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity, I am so proud of myself for not letting myself go and making a difference.

I have more work to do to reach my ultimate weight goals, but it's great to know that the changes I've made are paying off. And that the things I am doing will influence the decisions my daughters will make in the future about their health and in turn they will be able to maintain a healthier lifestyle as well. My oldest daughter's dad died 3 years ago from heart disease at the young age of 46. No one knew he was sick. He never saw the doctor, he lived a very sedentary life (even though he was not overweight), and had very poor eating habits. With that history, I need to lead by example and help guide her to making better decisions.

It's a great day today! I am motivated and feel great about the things I'm doing. It's never too late to make the changes you need to make. Take charge! You can do it!

Progress - 1st Month

Monday, February 01, 2010

February is here. Wow! This year is already flying. It seems like just yesterday I made the commitment to myself to start off the year right and get back to my pre-pregnancy weight and the healthier lifestyle I so long for.

I am excited to share that this first 4 weeks were great. There's still a lot of learning and a lot of work to do, but I managed to take off 5 lbs in 4 weeks! And not only have some of the weight already come off, but I have also managed to make it a habit to track my food intake on a daily basis. I have slacked a little in following the Spark People meal plans to the tee and this is where I see room for improvement and lots of learning to do! Last week was a perfect example. I failed to reach my goal of 1200 calories daily on several days and did notice a difference in energy levels and weight loss for the week.

Lessons learned so far:

1. Keep food log going! It's such a great tool...
2. Maintain a healthy balance between exercise (calories burned) and intake. Too little calories in can do as much damage as too much.
3. Plan meals ahead: this can help tremendously especially if we're planning to go out to dinner to a restaurant. Take the time to research their menus so you can make better/well informed decisions.
4. TAKE IT DAY BY DAY - Weight loss will come slowly but surely. It's not going to happen from one day to the next. So even if the scale does not budge this week or next week, keep moving! The weight will come off and you will notice the difference in the way you feel.

Will be sharing my progress on a weekly basis moving forward. This month will be AMAZING! I can already see it.

Body Composition Analysis

Thursday, January 28, 2010

I wish I would have done this at the beginning of my weight loss journey, but better late than never! Here are my results:

Body Type: Standard
BMI: 25.9
BMR: 5829 kj
Fat %: 29.3%
Fat Mass: 40.2 lb
FFM: 96.8 lb
TBW: 70.8 lb

Desirable Ranges
Fat %: 21-33% (my target is 22-24%)
Fat Mass: 25.8-47.6 lb (I'm within range, but would like to lower mine to about 30 lb)

To be in the healthy range, it suggested to only lose about 2.4 lbs of fat. Of course, my goal is to lose another 13 lbs and then work on toning and gaining about 5 lbs in muscle. That will put me at a fit, toned, lean 125 lbs.

I have scheduled a follow-up for 6 weeks from today to check on progress. Will probably do another one 6 weeks after. I'm so excited to be able to know exactly where I stand and where I need to go from here.
