Weight Loss Motivation

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

I read an article today on Peertrainer.com titled Weigh Loss Motivation 101.

www.peertrainer.com/coaching/weight_
loss_motivation_101.aspx?page=1

I definitely need this right now. Part of our challenge this week is to remind ourselves often of why we are doing this. This article helps to guide you to that why. Not just "I want to lose 40 more pounds", but "Why do I want to lose 40 more pounds".

There are 2 categories to consider:

1. Towards pleasure:
To feel good in the clothes I am wearing
To feel strong
To feel proud of myself
To stay in a jeans size long enough to wear them out
To travel and enjoy my retirement years with my husband

2. Away from pain:
Less pain in my knees and hip!!!!!!
Avoid the pain and complications of diabetes!!!!!

This is my list. While there are more items on the Pleasure list, I am more motivated by the Pain list. Diabetes scares me to death. The hospital unit where I work is filled with diabetic people and I see what happens. A work friend recently went blind because of her diabetes. I will not allow that to happen to me when I can do something about it!! I know that there are thin people with diabetes but they are the exception. That is my compelling reason to get off the couch!

Now that I have gotten to the root of my "WHY" I can work from there. I only need to go into the patients rooms to see my motivation.

I will enjoy all the pleasure reasons for losing weight but more than that I will enjoy the freedom of being healthy!

They are very good reasons to stay motivated. My sister found out she had diabetes and my mother got tested and she had it too. Now my brother has it and my one skinny active brother is per-diabetic. I get tested all the time and I definitely want to avoid it at all costs.

Thanks for writing this blog and sharing the link to PeerTrainer. I have been diagnosed with Diabetes. My doctor says if I can lose 25 pounds, that I can turn that around.

Why I haven't, I don't know.

Good job for you though. emoticon

I think that's one of the reasons it's sometimes tough for younger people to find long-term motivation. All those ailments can seem so far off. Once I hit my 40's I started to see people around me becoming debilitated and it got "real" very quickly.

I've said it on numerous ocassions, but I would keep eating the way I am now even if I never lost another ounce, because it's so good for my health otherwise.

These are GREAT reasons to get fit and healthy!! I especially agree with avoiding diabetes - that's what got me started with exercise over 30 years ago. My mother had type 2 diabetes and back then she didn't know nearly enough about all the medical issues it could cause so didn't really do a lot to change her lifestyle. She became legally blind and had a leg amputated 3 years before her death at age 76. Diabetes was her ONLY disease - but it caused many, many health issues. It breaks my heart when I see those with the disease not doing everything in their power to control it. So I'm with you - let's get healthy BEFORE we get the disease!!

Roaring River Pics

Sunday, March 10, 2013

We spent the last few days at Roaring River State Park in southern Missouri. The river is not really "roaring", but it is beautiful and we always enjoy our time there.

We had a good time fishing and playing around.
My grandson Logan with a couple of his trout.

Logan and his Mommy, my daughter Kate

He loves to feed the fish at the hatchery.

This is the spring that is the source of water for the river.

Here are a few pics from our hikes. Logan went on one even though he is "afraid of hikes!"

Progress

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Wow, this is a bad week to write a blog about progress. I feel like I have taken 5 giant steps backward this week. I managed to get some fitness in thanks to the BLC challenge but it was the bare minimum and no fun. I have been sick this week and really let that run away with me. I'm still not 100% but I think I am over the emotional eating part of it.

Before this terrible, awful week I had been making some really great progress! I had lost 10 lbs since the first of the year and was very diligently tracking both food and fitness. I am following Bob's Skinny Rules and they are working very well for me. Tomorrow starts an 8 week Better Weigh competition at work and that should help me to get back on track as I am feeling better.

You achieved a perfect score on the challenge while feeling sick all week! You may feel that you had a bad week, but your habits are kicking in and you're keeping on track! That's progress!

January Reflection/February Goals

Friday, February 01, 2013

January has been a successful month for me. I started Bob Harper's Skinny Rules this month and have lost several pounds. I am still very focused but sliding occasionally. I am consistently exercising every day with an occasional rest day. My husband and I are working together planning and cooking meals. It's so much easier with his help and support. We both love trying out new recipes and flavors. He is even on board with one meatless day per week.

February will be a bit more of a challenge for me. I have a scrapbooking retreat Feb 15-18 and will have little control over the food that is served. What I do have control of is how much of it goes in my mouth! My plan is to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks per day, NO GRAZING! I am taking plenty of veggies and fruit to supplement what is served and will come up with a healthier version treat to share. We will be in a cabin at a lake so I'm hoping for decent weather to get some good walks in.

I was able to give up sugar/sugar substitutes 95% in January. My goal for February is to continue that and to reduce my cheese intake to 3 servings a week. It is a real craving food for me and I dont want to get rid of it entirely but may have to eventually. I am streaking at 20 minutes fitness per day/5 days a week and will continue that for February. I have been tracking every bite and will continue that as well.

February will be FABULOUS!!

Congratulations on great success on many lines!

The retreat sounds delightful! Great idea taking your own healthy stuff to supplement. You are getting stronger and stronger; you can thrive even with a few extra challenge circumstances!

Dear Jane,

Friday, January 25, 2013

Please know that you are beautiful and perfect just the way you are. There are many different body types and yours is different than your sisters' or your best friend's.

Vegetables are your friends, learn to eat them. Believe it or not you will love Brussels Sprouts!

Your future daughter needs you to learn to eat healthy so that you can teach her while she is young. She will need the knowledge as an adult.

Never stop swimming!

Love,

Jane

Great job! It's so true that parents pass along their own views about eating & weight to their kids, especially daughters. I love Brussel sprouts, too.
