The Day of Jack Layton's Funeral

Sunday, September 04, 2011

I know I'm late on posting this but for those of you who couldn't or didn't attend, you may find The Toronto Star coverage of the event interesting. It's quite long but I thought it was worth going through. Lots of good photos and nice messages:

And, for those of you who don't know who Jack Layton was, he was the leader of the federal NDPs (New Democratic Party) and the head of the Official Opposition in Canada's House of Parliament where the NDP was the Official Opposition party for the first time in Canada's history. And, I have been a strong NDPer for most of my voting life as my parents were. And, I'm very sad that he died because I believe that it's because of him that the NDP got so many votes in our recent federal election.

As I don't watch TV or read newspapers, I didn't know this until I was in the living room with my step dad who always watches the news channel. They just showed the same brief clip over and over again. It was nice to get an in depth look at it all. I am the only one votes NDP in my family, which I have done all my life. He was the best thing to ever happen to the party, Its really a tragic blow for Canadians to have lost him. But his courage in fighting his disease and his legacy to the party will live on. I just don't know if they will find another leader that has his charisma and drive :(
Thanks for the links.

Very moving stuff. I've been impressed with the outpouring of love from my Spark Friends to the North. He must have been a wonderful man to bring out that kind of support from citizens.

Thanks for sharing.

2011 Walk to Fight Arthritis

Tuesday, March 29, 2011

This blog has been brought to you by some inspiration from ITSME51.

As some of you might know I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I also have recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees and shoulder. I've also been depressed lately because I haven't been exercising as much since my knees have been sore so as a goal for me for exercise, I decided to walk in my first ever Arthritis Foundation Walk. There's a 1K and a 5K walk whichever can be done by the participant but for me it will be a new challenge. I am proud to walk for this organization because thanks to the money donated to research, I am able to take new medications that have slowed the progress of my illness. I know there is no cure for arthritis and that it affects many children and adults everyday. My doing this is just one little thing I feel I can do to help myself and others. Maybe someday they will find a cure.

If anyone would like to support my efforts the link below should take you to my donation page. If you are unable or do not wish to contribute that is just fine as well, just say a prayer for me that day that my arthritis in not acting up.

Joanna, be careful. We are not supposed to be soliciting funds in Spark land.. Others have learned the hard way. Doesn't matter if its a good cause or not..
I would love to walk in one of these myself, but am awaiting foot surgery (again).
You might want to consider a knee brace for support. It kept me going for a while longer before I had to get my knees replaced.
All the best with it.

Recent Health News

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

I've been really achy the past few days. It's not supposed to rain until tonight so I don't know why I was achy two days before. It's unusual.

As well, I saw my family doctor last week and it's confirmed that I have osteoarthritis in both my knees but it's slightly worse in my left knee (which I definitely knew because it's the one that hurts most of the time). So, he prescribed Pennsaid (they're drops that you apply to your knee 4 times a day - it's kind of a topical aspirin) and it seems to help a little bit.

He also concurred with me that I'm suffering from a little depression, which I think is largely due to my lack of exercise because my knee is hurting. So, that's why he prescribed the Pennsaid because both of us agreed that treating the pain would go a long way in treating the depression so we'll see how that goes.

In the meantime, I've signed up to do the 5K 2011 Walk to Fight Arthritis on May 15th and I created the team, JoJo's Jammers (name is courtesy of my sister who knows that I'm Aunt JoJo to my many nieces and nephews). If you'd like to sponsor me, here's the link:

Hi Joanna, here's a site you might want to check, it seems like an excellent fit for you. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/bibl

Hope the Pennsaid works for you, I have a friend who uses it daily to control pain in her arthritic elbows. Take care...MJ
