2011 Walk to Fight Arthritis

This blog has been brought to you by some inspiration from ITSME51.

As some of you might know I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I also have recently been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees and shoulder. I've also been depressed lately because I haven't been exercising as much since my knees have been sore so as a goal for me for exercise, I decided to walk in my first ever Arthritis Foundation Walk. There's a 1K and a 5K walk whichever can be done by the participant but for me it will be a new challenge. I am proud to walk for this organization because thanks to the money donated to research, I am able to take new medications that have slowed the progress of my illness. I know there is no cure for arthritis and that it affects many children and adults everyday. My doing this is just one little thing I feel I can do to help myself and others. Maybe someday they will find a cure.

    Joanna, be careful. We are not supposed to be soliciting funds in Spark land.. Others have learned the hard way. Doesn't matter if its a good cause or not..
I would love to walk in one of these myself, but am awaiting foot surgery (again).
You might want to consider a knee brace for support. It kept me going for a while longer before I had to get my knees replaced.

Recent Health News

I've been really achy the past few days. It's not supposed to rain until tonight so I don't know why I was achy two days before. It's unusual.

As well, I saw my family doctor last week and it's confirmed that I have osteoarthritis in both my knees but it's slightly worse in my left knee (which I definitely knew because it's the one that hurts most of the time). So, he prescribed Pennsaid (they're drops that you apply to your knee 4 times a day - it's kind of a topical aspirin) and it seems to help a little bit.

He also concurred with me that I'm suffering from a little depression, which I think is largely due to my lack of exercise because my knee is hurting. So, that's why he prescribed the Pennsaid because both of us agreed that treating the pain would go a long way in treating the depression so we'll see how that goes.

In the meantime, I've signed up to do the 5K 2011 Walk to Fight Arthritis on May 15th and I created the team, JoJo's Jammers (name is courtesy of my sister who knows that I'm Aunt JoJo to my many nieces and nephews). If you'd like to sponsor me, here's the link:

January 1, 2010 - I had exercised 253 days the previous year (2009)

January 1, 2011 - I exercised 344 days last year (2010)

So, that's one good thing.

January 1, 2010 - I weighed 219 pounds

January 1, 2011 - I weighed 225 pounds

That's bad.

January 1, 2010 Measurements
Chest - 44"
Waist - 40"
Hips - 48"

January 1, 2011 Measurements
Chest - 44.5"
Waist - 42"
Hips - 49"

So, that's not good either. The gain in weight obviously wasn't muscle.

September 2010 - I met with a dietician to discuss why I wasn't losing weight. I brought random days of the week food diaries printed off of SparkPeople. She said that it appeared that I was doing everything right and that maybe I should just resign myself to not losing weight due to my autoimmune disease (RA) and the medications I'm on. She said continue eating well and exercising and at least you'll be healthy. But I wasn't ready to give up. I've been trying to lose weight since 1998. Compared to then, I'm down 40 or so pounds. But I didn't have rheumatoid arthritis then. I didn't get that until 2004 so should I give up?

I just can't yet. So, tomorrow I'm giving Weight Watchers another try. I lost 70 pounds on it before so I'll try it again. I'm also going to try an aqua-fit class and see how that goes.

I'm a Taurus and I'm stubborn (persistent) to the end (especially with myself). I just can't give up because I know that if I lose weight, I'll feel better. And, because if I can't lose weight then what's the point in trying?

    Hey, once we've re-vamped our lifestyle and enjoying our lives there is not one thing wrong with maintaining...and although you have a little uptick over the year, you essentially ARE maintaining! So KUDOS to YOU!

Hoping you'll find ways to tweak your life even more to your satisfaction but also take comfort in the accomplishments you've made as well!

Thx for stopping by my blog! Have been crawling up from a backslide myself. I was not very kind to myself this winter so far BUT: am ramping up for 2011!! :-)

    Joanna, you can do it. Eat well but not too much :), keep walking, do the aquafit and try some strength training if your joints are feeling good. Take it day by day, week by week- we're pulling for you...MJ emoticon emoticon emoticon
