Big changes ahead for me!

Saturday, June 07, 2014

This has been a difficult year for me. My job is very demanding and I cannot find the work life balance I need. In addition to this my mother's dementia worsened and she was not able to continue living independently as she was. My siblings and I had to make the difficult decision to place her in long term care at a skilled nursing facility.
After much thought and deliberation I decided my only option was to leave my job and concentrate on my health and well being. So I passed in my letter of resignation this week and my last day will be July 2! This is a huge step for me but know it is the right one.
I am a nurse so if in the fall after some time to care for myself I can pursue other options. And if so, it will be on a part time basis!

I can imagine how difficult it must have been for you to make that decision! I hope your mother settled in well at the nursing home. How is it going for you? Are you able to really take care of yourself?

Good for you! Glad you are able to take a early retirement and still have options later on if you want to go back into nursing! Sending best of wishes to you, your family! Do keep sparking! We would miss you if you left! Have a great week! Thank you for the goodie! emoticon

I am so happy for you!
Finally, after a lifetime of caring for others,
It is time to take care of yourself.
I retired early (after 28 years of teaching) to care for my mother the last year of her life- it was my honor and privilige to do so-
Had a few years to myself-
and then the grandkids started coming into my life.
I have learned to take care of myself now as I want to live a long healthy life.

You are doing the right thing. As a fellow nurse we always seem to be taking care of the others and never ourselves. As the saying goes we (nurses) make the worst patients. when you are ready, the nursing positions will always be there. Hospitals are always looking for Per Diem nurses and so are your local agencies. Just think you can work when you want to and you don't need to if you don't feel like it.

Sounds like a sound decision. Time to take care of you. Moving your mother is enough stress for now. My wife (retired nurse) set the career aside for a while to take care of family and herself then went back to nursing on a part time basis until she retired. It worked for her.

Congratulations for putting your health first. Too many times we don't do that, and without it, what do we have, really?

Congratulations on your retirement. I think it is awesome that you are honoring your self.
My family had to put my grandmom (91) in a nursing home last summer due to dementia. She had a very hard time with the transition, but is doing a lot better with it now.

Well good for you! I think that is a great decision. I know it must be terrifying but your heart told you it was the best thing for you to do so I know you have made the right decision. Working in healthcare myself in a very busy hospital, I know what that does to your mind, body and soul. It takes so much to be a healthcare worker so I applaud you for the years that you gave to the field and for your decision today. Best of luck to you and to your mother and siblings as a new journey begins for all of you.

A message for women everywhere!

Sunday, February 23, 2014

I am feeling overwhelmed today! Still working my 60 or so hours / week. My 93 yo mother fell and is at the hospital. Will be transferred to rehab, probably tomorrow. Spent the w/e visiting, coordinating, etc. when I opened my email this link appeared and wow, that is what I needed today! It is amazing that if we are open to what the universe sends, life is so much more tolerable! play.simpletruths.com/movie/oil-for-

This was beautiful and a lovely reminder to all of us to take care of ourselves too. Something we forget to do. Cherish your time with your mother, I know the devastating toll this disease takes. I wish you all the best.

Thank you for the powerful message! Yes, we need to take care of ourselves, so we can keep helping others the best we can. Sometimes we forget to do that. So you remember that while your mother is in the hospital and you working all those hours!
I sure do hope your Mom will be ok...sorry that happened to her. Rehab will help her!
Have a great week ahead. Take care. emoticon

Follow-up on last week's goals

Monday, February 03, 2014

Well, I am disappointed that I did not do too well.
For my 5,000 steps/ day I did get a score of 5 out of 7. One day forgot to wear it so I could have done 5,000 steps but can't measure it so won't count it.
Water consumption much better but need to increase to be sure that every day I make the 8!
Most disappointing was my work schedule. Can say I only did one day less than 10 hours. The rest more with one day 13!
Going to use the same goals for this week and be sure I do better!

Goals for the last week of January 2014!

Sunday, January 26, 2014

Wow, the month is coming to a close. I am going to make it a good week! These are my SMART goals for the week (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely).
1. Walk at least 5,000 steps a day measured on my FitBit.
I know for some of you this is not much at all but for me it can be somewhat challenging on Some days. Last week there were a couple of days at work that we had 4 hour planning meetings! Ugh! Those can't throw me off.... I need to find a way to get the steps in!
2. Drink my 8 glasses of water a day. Again for some of you this is easy. For me there are days I just don't do it. Have got to put my mind to it and just do it. Especially in this bitter cold air my skin is so dry!
3. Work a maximum of 10 hours a day! I know for some of you, you must think this is crazy ...I do too! There is so much work I will never get it done so I need to just leave after 10 hours! It zaps my energy when I do more and certainly makes it impossible to have any balance in my life.
So there you have it for my 3 goals for the week....let's see how I do.....will let you know next week!

Everyone have a good week and hope you have outlined your SMART goals!

Fit Bit challenge

Sunday, January 19, 2014

I had a fitbit, wore it faithfully and then it got "out of sync". Not sure why. Well I did email the company after numerous attempts to try and fix it myself. Never heard back from them. Had one of my kids look at it since they are more tech savvy than I am....but again to no avail. Today I was bound and determined to get it back to working right! I am proud to report I did it! My steps will be recorded again at last!

Keep that information handy, in case mine stops! I sometimes have to force sync it...I don't know why it just stops. Sometimes hitting refresh page will do it, but sometimes not.
Yes, I love to count my steps too! Makes me want to move more just to see my fitbit light up to congratulate me later when i reach my goal!!!
Keep moving! emoticon
I am trying to stay warm down here in FL...I moved here to get away from the cold! Now these Canada fronts are so strong they are making it way down here!! Stay warm! emoticon
