Flood zone revisited

Sunday, March 28, 2010

Today was an absolutely beautiful day, so off we went to the woods. We decided to ride the road that was flooded last time and see how it looks now. There are still big mud bogs in places, and the washout on the other side is still being repaired, but here are the then and now pictures of the covered bridge.

and now:

The yellow and black signs are 5 ft high, and it is another 6-8 ft down to the bridge. Lots of water in one day.
More rain is coming, but hopefully not a flood this time.

After our ride, we got some yard work done, grass mowed, brush cleared and burned, ate a banana pop (hey, we earned it), and got MIL out so she could enjoy the sunshine. Then DH being the animal he is, went for a 7 mile trail run.

I love spring.

Yikes Bev, that's a lot of water~! I am glad to see that you had a good day and didn't have to swim through parts of your route. emoticon emoticonYour DH sounds like a budding duathlete! He could do the run/bike events!
Have a great day!

Woodland discoveries

Saturday, March 20, 2010

Yesterday we took the grands for a hike in the woods. It is amazing the discoveries they make. The wild ginger is starting to come out and they were naming all the foods they like that has ginger in it. They remembered ferns, fungi, lichens, and moss from previous walks. Just when you think they aren't paying attention, they up and surprise you.

What a perfect way to spend your Saturday--I love their cute little walking sticks. That's great that you're helping them identify plants--that's becoming something of a lost art! What a valuable thing to do.

What a great walk. I guess it's time for me to start dragging my grandchildren into the woods too. I really have no excuse as there is a nice woodsy trail just 1 mile from my house. Although I haven't seen it, there are supposed to be salmon spawning along the creek in the fall. I really have to write myself notes. LOL

Once more to the brink

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Well, it was cool and damp again today, but we decided to take another mountain bike ride again. Today we went to the other side of the flooded bridge for a look around. Our usual road was closed, but that shouldn't stop a bike, right?

So off we went. We didn't make it all the way to the flooded bridge, but did find lots of things along the way. Like this wash.

There were other signs the water had been very high. The road was covered here, and it is ovefr 15 ft to the bottom.

Yet there were some very lovely things to see to. The moss is thriving, and turning the woods green.

It was a very lovely ride. Now I must go thaw my toes before dinner.

Thanks for sharing your pictures. It's nice to see ground that isn't covered in snow! We have concerns about flooding in ND area. In some places the snow pack is still 15 - 24" deep ... all that water has to go somewhere when it melts.

That looks like some bike ride. I love moss. In fact, I want it to grow as a ground cover in part of my back yard. We have a lot of shade where there is only dirt and a brick patio area. The bricks have some moss on them already. I watched a garden show last year where the owner had moss that looked like a beautiful carpet all year long. So here's hoping I can achieve the same results.

Your bike ride sounded muddy. We went hiking on Saturday and luckily I didn't slide too much in the mud. Although, I was talking to one guy and just as we were discussing snowshoeing, I literally started to slide down the hill. emoticon Luckily, I regained my footing and said,"That's kind of like snoeshoeing except you usually stay where you are when you put your foot down!" Have a great week.

Nice day for a hike

Saturday, March 13, 2010

Well, we had more rain yesterday and today, plus a cold front came through. So the weather is miserable. We decided to go for a hike instead of trying another bike ride. Found a nice quiet old logging road and off we went.

We found signs of spring along the way.

And when we got home there was a nice welcome back at the end of the sidewalk.

It was a good day.

Isn't it great to get outside, even though the weather might not be perfect? I went on a 50 mile bike ride today on the promise of clearing skies from the weatherman. Hah! Rain showers, cold, stiff head wind going UP hill, etc. My toes got so cold that I couldn't even feel them and yet, when I got home, I felt awesome. Warmed up those toes, had a protein drink and now am off for a warm shower. Life is good!

Our ride today

Thursday, March 11, 2010

Ok, between Tues night and Wed we had about 7 inches of rain. Our lake flooded the yard, and the road, areas of town that rarely flood were flooded. Road bike was out. So knowing the mountain bike trail would be a bit muddy, DH and I decided to take to the forest service roads for our ride. We grabbed the fenders, packed the tandem and off we went. Most of the roads were passable, enough gravel to keep them from being too terribly muddy. But there are several cement bridges, pads actually, requiring you to ford creeks. We made it about 4 miles before reaching one we could not ford. There is a high water marker that is 8 ft high, it cannot bee seen, not even a ripple where it is. So we turned around and headed back to the truck.

You can barely see the road on the other side. The creek is usually about 8 ft wide, today it was about 100 yards across.

More rain coming tomorrow, can't wait to see how it looks after that.

What a flood! We are supposed to get heavy rain for the next few days, which ought to melt the rest of the snow. Wonder what kind of flooding we'll see?

If you get more rain, looks like you're going to have to pull out your row boat instead of the bikes!

Wow, I can see the road on the other side there. What a fun ride that would be! Sometimes the novelty of circumstance makes up for a deviation in expectation.

Awesome ride! I can hardly wait to hear what tomorrow brings for you. We've had really windy days with a lot of rain. Supposed to continues tomorrow but by the week-end it should get drier. I'm hoping to get in a long ride this week-end. Thanks for the photos. It is fun to see where other people ride.
